The document discusses how Source A from the exam question encodes binary oppositions between Queen Elizabeth and Meghan Markle. It analyzes how the image layout, facial expressions, and anchoring text position the two figures as opposites in terms of age, duty, tradition vs progressivism, and unity vs disunity. It explains how the language of the headline, sub-headlines and introductory text use this opposition to implicitly criticize Markle without explicitly stating it. The cultural representation suggests British values are duty, tradition and authenticity as embodied by the Queen, which appeals to the right-wing readership of the Daily Mail.
Power and Media Industries – Curran and Seaton argues that patterns of ownership and control are the most significant factors in how the media operates. Media industries follow increasing concentration of ownership, leading to a narrowing of opinions and pursuit of profit over quality. The internet does not offer diverse voices and is constrained by nationalism and censorship, while news remains controlled by powerful organizations defending their oligopoly.
The document provides an overview of several theoretical approaches to analyzing media language:
1) Semiology, as described by Barthes, is the study of signs and how denotations and connotations are organized into myths that make ideology seem natural.
2) Narratology, according to Todorov, is the study of narrative structure as a movement from an initial equilibrium to a new equilibrium through some transformation.
3) Genre theory, from Neale, views genre as evolving through the repetition of codes and conventions shared between producers and audiences through media products and other references.
4) Structuralism, exemplified by Levi-Strauss, studies the underlying rules and binary oppositions

Here are some key points I noticed from examining the Radio 1 Breakfast Show website and social media:
- Much of the content on social media like Instagram stories is very casual, featuring behind-the-scenes glimpses of the presenters in an informal, chatty style. This seems aimed at creating a sense of intimacy and connection with younger audiences.
- Hashtags used prominently include references to pop culture like #TBT and #ThrowbackThursday that would appeal to teens and 20-somethings. Language and slang used is contemporary and youth-focused.
- Diversity is represented both in terms of presenters and guests, reflecting the target demographic. However, content could still be more inclusive of different backgrounds.
The document discusses various representations evident in music videos and how they promote artists. It covers concepts like intertextuality, social realism, and targeting audiences. Key points include how Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" video uses a realist representation of street life to portray the band as authentic and grounded. It also analyzes how the video's continuous shot and lack of focus on any one member presents an alternative perspective to promote equality.

It discusses the show's requirements as a public service broadcaster, including entertaining young listeners, offering new music with an emphasis on emerging UK artists, and providing news relevant to young adults. Finally, it provides context on guest Romesh Ranganathan and how he represents UK communities in line with the BBC's public purposes.
This document provides an overview of contexts to consider when analyzing media texts, including social, cultural, and political contexts. It focuses on these contexts in relation to analyzing advertisements, music videos, and magazines. For magazines specifically, it discusses the importance of also considering political contexts. It then gives examples of how to analyze the social and cultural contexts of various advertisements. It provides background on The Big Issue magazine, noting that it allows homeless people to sell issues and provides an alternative representation. It emphasizes the importance of analyzing how media texts use various elements of language when doing textual analysis.
This document analyzes the music video for Emeli Sande's song "Heaven" through its use of media language and representation. It discusses how the video represents the contrasts in the song's lyrics between temptation and redemption through gritty social realism and transcendent imagery. It provides tasks to analyze how the video conveys social realism through elements like location and camerawork, and conveys transcendence through shots featuring religious imagery. It also examines how the video positions its audience and promotes a left-leaning, anti-racist ideology through its inclusive representation of different people.
Postmodernism in media rejects notions of absolute truth and reality. It blurs the lines between high and low culture and reality versus representations of reality. Postmodern media emphasizes style over substance and questions traditional narratives and interpretations. Some key aspects include a lack of originality, intertextuality between different media forms, and a collapsed distinction between media and lived experience where media simulations define reality. The Matrix film trilogy exemplifies these postmodern themes through its simulated reality and lack of clear distinctions.
The video has many intertextual references to works like The Wicker Man and the children's TV show Trumpton. It depicts a town where the upper classes hold power over the workers and foreigners. Scenes show the mayor controlling the townspeople and migrants being forced into unfair labor. The video comments on issues like xenophobia, authoritarianism, and differences in social class. It uses surreal puppet imagery and animation to portray these concepts in a way that references both nostalgia for childhood media and darker symbolic art styles.
The document discusses representation in media. It makes three key points:
1. All media texts are representations of reality that are intentionally composed by their producers and are artificial versions of reality.
2. It is important to remember that every media form, from videos to magazines, represents someone's concept of existence through signs and symbols.
3. Representation is a fluid, two-way process where producers position a text in relation to reality and audiences assess the text based on its relationship to their own reality. Representation mediates ideas of people, places, and events in various ways.
The Old Spice advertising campaign from 2010 aimed to modernize the brand's image and attract new customers. Known as "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like", it featured actor Isaiah Mustafa addressing the camera and appealing to women. Through viral videos and an interactive social media strategy, the campaign became a major success. It helped Old Spice shift perceptions from being seen as outdated to representing contemporary masculine ideals.
Curran and Seaton argue that patterns of media ownership and control are the most significant factors in how media operates. They believe media industries follow capitalist patterns of increasing concentration, with ownership in fewer hands. This leads to a narrowing of opinions represented and a pursuit of profit over quality. Media is controlled by a small number of companies primarily driven by profit and power, limiting variety, creativity, and quality. More diverse ownership could create more varied media reflecting a range of societal views.
The Lucozade Sport advertising campaign from 2013 featured soccer star Gareth Bale and aimed to promote the message that Lucozade hydrates and fuels athletes better than water. The campaign's £4-9 million "I Believe" slogan and social media integration was meant to reinforce Lucozade's position as a sports nutrition drink. However, the campaign's main claim was banned in early 2014 for failing to demonstrate benefits during prolonged exercise over water.

There is some general narrative theory, Media theory Laura Mulvey etc and Racial Representation theory, Stuart Hall, Paul Gilroy, bell hooks etc. This was based on Media and Collective Identity focusing on the representation of black culture in British Film and American Music Videos.
This document provides an overview of various media theories that can be applied to analyzing representations in media. It discusses theorists such as Laura Mulvey, John Berger, Bell Hooks, Stuart Hall, Tricia Rose, Paul Gilroy, Michael Eric Dyson, Kobena Mercer, Jacques Lacan, Michel Foucault, and concepts like narrative theory, audience reception theory, and moral panic. Revision tips are provided, emphasizing applying these theories to coursework and case studies through references to different media like films, music videos, and magazines. Key ideas from different theorists are summarized, such as Hall's notions of "slave figure," "the native," and "the clown/entertainer" characterizations of
This document discusses the changing world views over the past 50 years and the rise of postmodernism. It argues that each decade since the 1950s has seen the loss of an important aspect of what it means to be human: innocence in the 1950s, authority in the 1960s, love in the 1970s, hope and the future in the 1980s, and the power of reason in the 1990s. Postmodernism rejects objective truth and moral values in favor of subjective interpretations. As Christians, the document says we must define truth through correspondence to reality and logical coherence, and remain in the world but not of it, following Jesus' example.

The document outlines instructions for answering two questions about representations in two news sources (A and B). Question 1 involves analyzing the sources' social/cultural representations using Levi-Strauss's theory of binary oppositions. Question 2 involves outlining conventions of print newspapers and online articles, analyzing contrasting use of conventions in the sources, and making judgements about how conventions construct viewpoints. The document provides guidance on key aspects to focus on for each question, including oppositions, imagery, headlines, and ideological viewpoints constructed.

AUDIENCE THEORY -CULTIVATION THEORY - GERBNER.pptxiammrhaywood
Gerbner's cultivation theory holds that prolonged exposure to television cultivates standardized roles, behaviors, and perceptions of social reality in viewers. Through content analysis of television programs, Gerbner found that heavy television viewers were more likely to develop a "mean world syndrome," becoming cynical and distrustful of others due to frequent depictions of violence. They also exhibited "mainstreaming," having a common, moderate outlook shaped by consistent television portrayals. Gerbner argued television exposure shapes viewers' understanding of the world by promoting narrow, stereotypical representations and normalizing limited roles.
AUDIENCE THEORY -- FANDOM -- JENKINS.pptxiammrhaywood
Jenkins introduces the concept of participatory culture, where audiences are active participants in media rather than passive consumers. He argues new media has accelerated this, as people create online communities, share user-generated content, and collaborate, generating collective intelligence. Jenkins prefers the term "spreadable media" over "viral" as it emphasizes audience participation. He also describes fans as "textual poachers" who actively engage with media texts and shape their meanings within fan communities.
To what extent does media ownership affect video game audiences.pptxiammrhaywood
This document discusses how media ownership and censorship can affect video game audiences. It provides definitions for key terms like media ownership, censorship, and accessibility. It then analyzes how the creation, distribution, and censorship of games like Minecraft by large corporations like Microsoft can impact audiences and their consumption and ideas. However, it also notes that independent and crowd-funded games can take more creative risks. The document also examines how Minecraft has worked to make the game more accessible to audiences with disabilities or socio-economic barriers.
Applying Academic Ideas to Long Form Television Drama discusses various academic ideas and arguments that can be applied when analyzing long form television dramas, such as Stranger Things. It outlines theories of semiology, narratology, genre, structuralism, and postmodernism. For each theory, it provides a one sentence summary of the key ideas and discusses how the theory can be applied and evaluated using Stranger Things as an example, noting both the insights and limitations of each approach.
Both advertisements use media language to establish brand identity and values of inclusiveness and charity. The Shelter advertisement uses red text and language of help to position viewers as potential service users and reassure donors. The Life Charitable Trust advertisement uses images of a trapped child and imperative language to position viewers as crusaders against social issues like child slavery and encourage donations. Both aim to draw attention, build interest in the cause, and encourage donations or use of services through calls to action.
Bandura's research on the Bobo doll experiments demonstrated that children's aggressive behavior could be directly influenced by observing aggressive behavior modeled in media. Specifically, children who watched adult actors aggressively attacking a Bobo doll with actions like hitting later exhibited similar aggressive behaviors towards the doll. Bandura argued this showed behavior could be learned through direct media modeling. He also believed media representations may have an even stronger influence than live modeling due to amplification effects related to attention, retention of vivid media content, and the aspirational nature of celebrities as role models. This research supported the view that media can directly shape human behavior rather than just reflecting existing attitudes.
Gauntlett argues that identity is increasingly fluid and open to individual choice and expression due to the proliferation of diverse media representations and messages. Traditional rigid social roles and expectations of gender, sexuality and identity are being challenged. Online media in particular provide opportunities for self-expression and identity formation through sharing content and participating in conversations, allowing people to craft their personal narratives and identities.
Stuart Hall's reception theory model proposes that media producers encode preferred meanings into texts, but audiences can decode texts in different ways based on their own frameworks of knowledge and lived experiences. Specifically, Hall identifies three positions of decoding: dominant/hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. The model also accounts for how the structures of media production, like routines, genres, and the institutional and economic contexts can influence the encoding of meanings.
The document outlines Stuart Hall's theories about representation and media. Hall argues that meaning is not fixed, but is constructed through what is present, absent, and different in a representation. He also argues that audiences play a role in generating meaning from representations, though power structures like ideology and stereotyping try to fix meanings. Specifically, Hall notes that stereotypes in media both reflect and shape social attitudes. A key strategy is to deconstruct representations from within to open up multiple meanings.
The document analyzes the front cover of Big Issue 1531, which features Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III. It makes the following key points:
1) The cover aims to appeal to a royalist demographic by portraying the Queen and King in a positive light with smiles, showing them as trustworthy leaders.
2) It demonstrates gender equality by having them eyeline matched and facing each other with similar expressions, emphasizing their secure relationship and Charles' preparation to lead.
3) The magazine targets an educated, professional ABC1 audience by addressing the important topic of leadership changes in a detailed way aligned with their ideologies using hard news coverage.
The document discusses the cover of a magazine featuring Kwajo, a mix-raced person represented as a "modern British hero". The cover uses conventions like bold text for the headline, a candid photo, and cheap clothing to emphasize Kwajo's story as addressing a big issue and to establish a direct relationship with readers. These conventions, along with featuring a mix-raced person as a hero, work to construct an ideology of inclusivity and aim to deconstruct the idea of Britain as a predominantly white supremacist country.
This document analyzes the cover of Issue 1505 of The Big Issue magazine. It summarizes the key elements of the cover design, including the masthead, issue date, headline, sub-headline, color scheme, and teasers. It then analyzes the image choice and mise-en-scene of the cover photo of a homeless woman. Finally, it discusses the viewpoints and ideologies reflected in the cover, including collectivism, internationalism, and inclusivity.
The article discusses former doctor Adam Kay's memoir "This Is Going To Hurt" which has been adapted into a TV show. Kay remains angry about the chronic underfunding of the NHS over many years that has left the health service in an even more precarious state. The depiction in the memoir and show of an overworked NHS resonates with the current situation facing the health system due to lack of resources.
The document analyzes the conventions used in the environmental covers of The Big Issue issue #1502. It summarizes that the masthead uses a large bold sans-serif font positioned to convey environmentalist and inclusionary views. The headline and subheadline also use bold sans-serif fonts to convey a general idea of collectivism without ignoring individuals. The color scheme and edited images are meant to depict a dystopian atmosphere while still being unconventional. Teasers are in small twisted fonts to not distract from the main stories.
The document discusses codes and conventions used and broken on the magazine cover. It focuses on the individualism of the vendors expressing their hopes for change, but also their collectivism as representatives of the working class seeking a brighter future. Progressive values of inclusivity and equality are shown by making the vendors and queen equally important. Viewpoints of individualism, collectivism, inclusivity, and nationalism are constructed, arguing both individual and collective values must work together for social change.
Prince William and a vendor named Dave are depicted on the cover of The Big Issue magazine. Their body language and casual clothing imply an air of equality and friendliness between them despite their different social classes. This promotes a viewpoint of collectivism by showing someone of higher social standing, like Prince William, interacting with and assisting someone often seen as lesser. The positioning of Dave in front of Prince William further emphasizes equality and suggests they are exhibiting ideals of inclusivity and socialism.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
it describes the bony anatomy including the femoral head , acetabulum, labrum . also discusses the capsule , ligaments . muscle that act on the hip joint and the range of motion are outlined. factors affecting hip joint stability and weight transmission through the joint are summarized.

ACCORDING TO THE EXAM BOARD
Structuralism is the study of the hidden rules that govern a structure.
Levi-Strauss thought that the human mind could be investigated by studying the
fundamental structure underlying myths and fables from around the world
(which he saw as one unitary system). He developed the idea of the ‘binary
opposition’ – that the system of myths and fables was ruled by a structure of
opposing terms, e.g. hot-cold, male-female, culture-nature, raw-cooked.
Many writers have analysed media products using the idea of the binary
opposition, but seeing the overall system as ‘ideology’ rather than ‘human
consciousness’

According to the Daily Mail, British
culture is defined by duty, authenticity
and service. We respect the queen
and all she stands for.
The two images in Source A, are positioned to encode the binary
opposition between the Queen (symbolic of age, duty,
traditionalism, unity) and Meghan Markle (youth, selfishness,
progressivism, disunity). While there is no explicit condemnation
of Markle, the facial expression in the selected image connotes
smugness, while the Queen seems open and friendly. The
anchoring text further connotes the binary opposition between
them: ‘Speaking Out’ encoding a distasteful desire to speak
publicly about private issues, while the Queen is making a dutiful
“speech” in her role as monarch. The cultural representation of
the dutiful monarch in conflict with the selfish and unseemly
American, will appeal to the Mail’s right-wing readership because
it reinforces the myth of patriotism that that they value.
The language of the banner headline, sub-headlines and standfirst
uses the binary opposition between the two figures to encode a
negative response to Markle, without explicitly stating it. The use
of the semantic field of warfare in the term “bombshell”, further
reinforces the idea of opposition. The banner headline proclaims
that “duty is everything,” and the subheadline goes on to say that
this is “real service.” The encoded message is that Queen is
genuine (real) and dutiful, implying the binary opposition, that
Markle is fake and self-serving. The socio-cultural representation
implies that British culture values, duty, traditionalism and
authenticity, all of which are embodied by the Queen.
