The University of Michigan-Dearborn Formula SAE team designed a new tubular space frame for their electric race car using SolidWorks. An initial FEA test showed the frame would have a torsional rigidity of 1350 lb-ft/deg, meeting their 1500 lb-ft/deg goal. The frame was manufactured using a multi-plate jig system and TIG welding. A physical torsion test confirmed the FEA results, measuring 1389 lb-ft/deg stiffness. Dynamic testing with sensors will provide data to improve the frame design.
