Unit Soccer (Beginner Class)
Day 1
Objectives: By the end of class all students will be able to:
 Perform the basics of dribbling a soccer ball
 Be able to execute a simple person to person pass
 Be able to execute a simple shot on goal
 Organize as a team to play a soccer game
 Have a general understanding on the rules of soccer
Equipment:
 Cover jerseys (# class dependent)
 Soccer balls (# class dependent)
 Soccer goal (2/4)
 Cones (# class dependent)
Safety:
 Forbid soccer tackles (Dependent on student maturity)
 Make sure space is open and free of foreign objects during drills and game
Assessment Suggestions:
 Direct observation
 Completion of drills
 Effort of participation in the game
85 minutes total
Minute 0 to 5 Locker room dressing out meet in the gym/ classroom
Minute: 5 to 10-15 Warm-up activities/ expectations
Soccer ball tag, whole class (or slip up if not enough balls). Have the ones in 2 have balls. The
object is to hit another in the foot. When they are hit with the ball on the foot they then become
it as well and grab a soccer ball trying to hit others in the foot with the ball. Go until only 1 is
left standing. If the group is split up have fitness for those that are out at the time.
Minute: 10-15 to 20-25 Dribble Drill
Have cones set up in a line with enough space to dribble between. Have as many Lines
as possible to keep as many students moving as possible. Have students dribble around all the
cones and back (can be done multiple times). (Add difficulty by having them start over if hit a
cone)
Minute 20-25 to 25-30 Cone Passing Drill
Keeping the cones in the rows, have the students pair up. Students will jog on their side of the
cones passing to the other in-between the cones. They will start and end in the same location.
Minute 25-30 to 35-45 Dribble Knock Out
Have cones set up in a circle (Size can vary based on students and as students get knocked out).
Each student needs to have a ball (Can be split up into 2 groups if needed). Students start inside
the circle and dribble the ball around trying to keep other students from knocking their ball out of
the circle; while at the same time trying to knock other balls out of the circle. The game is over
when all but one student remains in the circle. Students who have been knocked out/ or if spit
groups those not participating at the time will be jogging around the field/court. If there was a
split group the other group gets to play and the first group jogs. (Optional if have 2 groups the
top performers could play in a third game, students could be spectators or jog open option)
Minute 35- 45 to 40-55 2 vs. 2 (2 forwards v 1 defender 1 goalie)
Have the cones set up to have one goal to score. Split the students into groups (even by 4’s if
possible). Have them go 2 vs. 2 with the 2 forwards trying to score on the defenders rotate
(Forward to Forward to Defender to Goalie to Forward).
Minute 40-55 to 44-59
Split up students into teams (2 to 4 depending on # of students). Briefly go over some rules
(throw-ins, offside’s, goalies can use hands, yellow/red cards) and expectations
Minute 44-59 to 70
Play a full game of soccer. If short on people make the field smaller and use cones as goals. If
an abundant of players, use both sides of the field to have 2 games at once using cones for at
least 1 goal maybe both.
Minute 70 to 75
Review the lessons of the day
Minute 75 to 85
Send students to locker room to prepare for next class

Minute 25-30 to 35-45 Dribble Knock Out Have cones set up in a circle (Size can vary based on students and as students get knocked out). Each student needs to have a ball (Can be split up into 2 groups if needed). Students start inside the circle and dribble the ball around trying to keep other students from knocking their ball out of the circle; while at the same time trying to knock other balls out of the circle. The game is over
  • 3. when all but one student remains in the circle. Students who have been knocked out/ or if spit groups those not participating at the time will be jogging around the field/court. If there was a split group the other group gets to play and the first group jogs. (Optional if have 2 groups the top performers could play in a third game, students could be spectators or jog open option) Minute 35- 45 to 40-55 2 vs. 2 (2 forwards v 1 defender 1 goalie) Have the cones set up to have one goal to score. Split the students into groups (even by 4’s if possible). Have them go 2 vs. 2 with the 2 forwards trying to score on the defenders rotate (Forward to Forward to Defender to Goalie to Forward). Minute 40-55 to 44-59 Split up students into teams (2 to 4 depending on # of students). Briefly go over some rules (throw-ins, offside’s, goalies can use hands, yellow/red cards) and expectations Minute 44-59 to 70 Play a full game of soccer. If short on people make the field smaller and use cones as goals. If an abundant of players, use both sides of the field to have 2 games at once using cones for at least 1 goal maybe both. Minute 70 to 75 Review the lessons of the day Minute 75 to 85 Send students to locker room to prepare for next class
