UNIT 11: SOURCES OF ENERGY
1. WARM UP:
* Activity 1: watch the video and list some sources
of energy in this video
List some sources of energy you have seen :
- Electrical energy
- Heat energy
- Muscular energy
- Solar energy
- Hydel energy
- Wind energy
* Activity 2: Answer the following questions:
1. What sources of energy do you know ?
2. What do you need energy for ?
There are a lot of different sources of energy such as:
electrical , light , muscular , chemical, geothermal
energy and some natural energy as solar, wind, water
energy and so on…
We need energy to live and work, to
cook meals, to light, heat or cool the
house, to run machines...
LESSON 1: READING
UNIT 11: SOURCES OF ENERGY
At present, most of our energy comes from fossil fuels (oil, coal, and natural gas). However,
such reserves are limited. Because power demand is increasing very rapidly, fossil will be
exhausted within a relatively short time. Therefore, people must develop and use alternative
sources of energy
One alternative sources is nuclear energy. Nuclear energy can provide enough electricity
for the world’s needs for hundreds of years, but it can be very dangerous. Another alternative
source of energy is geothermal heat, which comes from deep inside the earth. Scientists use
this heat to make energy. However, this energy is available only in a few places in the
world.
The sun, water, and the wind are other alternative sources of energy. The wind turns
windmills and moves sailboats. It is clean source of energy, and there is lots of it.
Unfortunately, if the wind does not blow, there is no wind energy. When water moves from a
high place to a lower place, it makes energy. This energy is used to create electricity .Water
power gives energy without pollution. However, people have to build dams to use this
energy. And as dams cost a lot of money, water energy is expensive.
The sun releases large amounts of energy every day. This energy can be changed into
electricity. Many countries use solar energy for their daily life. Solar panels on the roofs of
houses can create enough energy to heat or cool an entire house. Solar energy is not only
plentiful and infinite but also clean and safe.
Although there are some disadvantages, the potential of alternative sources of energy is
great. However, how to make full use of these sources of energy is a question for researchers
Listen to the tape:

cũng như trong đời sống hằng ngày
Lucky energy !
5. CONSOLIDATION: Watch the video and discuss the following
question:
What should we do to save and conserve energy ?
What should we do to save and conserve energy ?
- We should use natural lights instead of electric lights and turn off all
appliances when not in use
- We should reduce using of appliances by:
+ choosing which appliances you really need to use
+ unplugging everything
+replacing old appliances with new models
- We should keep walking or riding bikes
instead of driving motorbikes , cars..
- We should preserve and use sensibly energy
(preserve water, plants and animals, say no to cutting down and burning
forests, overexploiting minerals, using explosives and electricity to catch
fish and other sea animals.)
- We should stop discharging pollutants into soil, water..
6.HOMEWORK:
1. Do the cloze test page 126 in the
students’ book.
2. Learn by heart all new words.
3. Prepare the next lesson ( part B: speaking).

Nuclear power Advantage(s) Disadvantage(s) -It’s unlimited - It had more 40 years ago and created a big source of energy ( 500 million KW in a factory in 2000) -It’s can be dangerous - Production needs to have modern technique, a lot of money, safe methods -It’s a dangerous type of weapon in wars
  • 11. 2.Geothermal heat Advantage(s) Disadvantage(s) -It’s available -It’s useful . It can cool and heat our house - It helps us to save money -It’s available in some places -It’s changeable(too hot/cold),threatening to human, plants, animals…
  • 12. 3. Solar energy Advantage(s) Disadvantage(s) - It’s clean, safe, infinite -It’s cheap -It is renewable, unlimited -It is used in branch of aeronautics, missile, motor car, metallurgy, chemicals -It shows changing between the day and the night -It’s only during the day time -It can destroy our environment if it’s abundant (appearance of dry seasons)
  • 13. 4.Wind power Advantage(s) Disadvantage(s) -It’s clean, unlimited -It can be used to create electricity ( Phong Dien I – Binh Thuan factory with 30 MV) - If the wind doesn’t blow, there is no wind energy - In some deep areas, If there is not wind, the rain may not have
  • 14. 5.Water power Advantage(s) Disadvantage(s) - It is expensive - It’s polluted, exhausted in some countries (1.3 billion people lack of fresh water ) - If it has more, It can cause the flood -It’s clean, unlimited ( Vietnam accounts for 1.4 amount of water in the world)
  • 15. 4. TASK 2: Answer the following questions : 1.What is the major source of energy ? 2.Are fossil fuels limited ? Why/ why not ? 3.How many sources of energy are mentioned in the text, and which one do you think has the most potential ? 4.How important is water energy in our life ? 5.What are the serious consequences of wasting energy ?
  • 17. 1. What is the major source of energy ? Our major source of energy comes from fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas )
  • 18. 2. Are fossil fuels limited ? Why/ why not ? Yes, they are limited. Because power demand is increasing rapidly
  • 19. 3. How many sources of energy are mentioned in the text, and which one do you think has the most potential ? There are 5 sources of energy. Solar energy is the most potential
  • 20. 4. How important is water energy in our life ? Man and most animals need a constant supply of water to live. Man and animals can’t live without water
  • 21. 5. What are the serious consequences of wasting energy ? The serious consequences are changing the earth’s climate and increasing “ Green house effect” ( hiệu ứng nhà kính) Hiệu ứng nhà kính là hiện tượng CO2 tăng lên đáng kể trong khí quyển, làm cho nhiệt độ trái đất tăng lên. Do việc đốt cháy nhiên liệu quá mức trong các nhà máy cũng như trong đời sống hằng ngày
  • 23. 5. CONSOLIDATION: Watch the video and discuss the following question: What should we do to save and conserve energy ?
  • 24. What should we do to save and conserve energy ? - We should use natural lights instead of electric lights and turn off all appliances when not in use - We should reduce using of appliances by: + choosing which appliances you really need to use + unplugging everything +replacing old appliances with new models - We should keep walking or riding bikes instead of driving motorbikes , cars.. - We should preserve and use sensibly energy (preserve water, plants and animals, say no to cutting down and burning forests, overexploiting minerals, using explosives and electricity to catch fish and other sea animals.) - We should stop discharging pollutants into soil, water..
  • 25. 6.HOMEWORK: 1. Do the cloze test page 126 in the students’ book. 2. Learn by heart all new words. 3. Prepare the next lesson ( part B: speaking). - find out new words - find out words/phrases to talk about advantages and disadvantages of using some sources of energy
