- 1. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1 Why would you complete research if you were creating a new media product? • To find out if your target audience would buy your product • To find out how much you could sell your product for • To find out how to make your product more appealing to your target audience • To find out how to market your product to your target audience Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage Primary Primary research consists of a collection of original data collected by the researcher. It is often undertaken after the researcher has gained some insight into the issue by reviewing secondary research or by analysing previously collected primary data. • Researcher can focus on both qualitative and quantitative issues. • Addresses specific research issues • Great control • Primary data may be very expensive in preparing and carrying out the research. • It takes longer to undertake primary research than to acquire secondary data. • By the time the research is complete it may be out of date. • Low response rate has to be expected. Secondary Secondary data is the data collected by someone else other than the researcher himself. This data can be gathered from government records, books, trade associations, national or international institutes, statistics agencies, etc. • Time and Cost effective • Data collected by governments and other institutes is usually very extensive and covers a large spectrum of issues • From secondary data one can form hypothesis and can evaluate the cost and efforts required to conduct own surveys. • Secondary Researcher needs to understand various parameters and assumptions that primary research had taken while collected information. A term may have different meaning for different people, example a term 'youth' • Inaccuracy of Data: • Time Lag Issues: Information collected from books, historical surveys are usually not sync with the times and might have changed drastically. • May not be Specific • Some of the secondary sources might have copyrighted their information and using them without permission can lead to various legal complications.
- 2. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1 Quantitative Qualitative research is concerned with complete and detailed descriptions of events. Examples are observations, artefacts’, and interviewing and focus groups. • Useful during the early stages of a study when the researcher may be unsure of exactly what will be studied or what to focus on. • Gives the researcher freedom to let the study unfold more naturally • The researcher of a study using qualitative research is heavily involved. The researcher interprets the research according to his or her own biased view, which skews the data gathered. • Time consuming and can last for months or even years. Qualitative Creates statistical models to explain events. Examples are asking people their opinions on certain products or companies about image, positions, awareness and attitudes. • Research allows the researcher to measure and analyse data. • The relationship between an independent and dependent variable is studied in detail. • The researcher is more objective about the findings of the research. • Context of the study or experiment is ignored. • Research does not study things in a natural setting or discuss the meaning things have for different people.

Unit 1: P1, M1, D1 What research methods did you use when completing the assignments in year 10 for Unit 5: Video Production – (e.g. primary, secondary, qualitative, quantitative) For this unit I mainly used secondary research. We looked at various crime dramas (Sherlock, New Tricks) we then took notes on key conventions that these dramas used. We also used BARB to look at audience and viewing figures. This helped in the planning of my own crime drama, as I now knew what conventions I needed to add plus how to attract my target audience. What research techniques did you use when completing the assignments in year 10 for Unit 5: Video Production? (e.g. using the library, the internet, watching videos, reading info, recces, practises, plans etc.) • Internet – BARB, Wikipedia, YouTube, Google, • Dvds - (Sherlock, New Tricks) • Case studies - Sherlock How did you collate, store and use the information trail for Unit 5? (e.g. did you book mark key websites? Keep a list of websites used? Print off or save any info for your folders?) • Bookmarks for key websites – To quickly find key websites. • Case study notes – Dramas we would of watched with conventions identified. • Blog posts – To keep all information How and why might you use the four research methods in a real life situation? For example if you worked for the BBC and were tasked with creating a new reality TV show how might you use the four research methods to help? • Primary – Questionnaire to potential target audience to discover viewing habits. • Secondary – BARB for viewing figures, historical data on similar products. • Quantitative – ratings, web hits, focus groups on historical viewing habits. • Qualitative – interviewing focus groups (target audience )
