The two-phase locking protocol requires transactions to acquire all locks in a growing phase before releasing any locks in a shrinking phase, ensuring serializability. However, deadlocks are still possible. Strict two-phase locking requires transactions to hold exclusive locks until commit to prevent cascading rollbacks. Conversion between shared and exclusive locks allows more flexibility while maintaining serializability.

Advanced malware such as TDL4, Rovnix, Gapz, Omasco, Mebromi and others have exposed in recent years various techniques used to circumvent the usual defenses and have shown how much companies are not prepared to deal with these sophisticated threats. Although the industry has implemented new protections such as Virtualized Based Security, Windows SMM Security Mitigation Table (WSMT), Kernel Code Signing, HVCI, ELAM, Secure Boot, Boot Guard, BIOS Guard, and many others, it is still unknown the professionals of the architecture of these protections, what are the components attacked by these contemporary malwares in the context of BIOS / UEFI and what are the tricks used by them. Precisely because of the lack of adequate understanding, most machines (BIOS / UEFI + operating system) remain vulnerable in the same way as a few years ago. In addition, there are a growing number of malwares that have used kernel drivers to circumvent limitations and protections in order to gain full access to the operating system and data. Exactly for these reasons, it is necessary to understand the way that malwares act as device drivers and what are the mechanisms used by these threats to infect an operating system. The purpose of this presentation is to show clearly and without too much details that often hinders understanding, how these threats act, which components are attacked, what are the techniques used by these advanced malware to subvert the system and how existing protections work .

This talk will demonstrate what everyone has long feared but never proven: there are hardware backdoors in x86 processors, and they’re buried deeper than we ever imagined possible. In this talk, we walk through how we discovered a privilege escalation backdoor in a family of x86 CPUs, that allows an unprivileged user, on an unmodified system, to circumvent all processor security checks and escalate from ring 3 to ring 0 – permitting an unprivileged, arbitrary userland program to directly modify and execute code inside of the kernel, regardless of the operating system, security patches, antivirus, firmware, etc. Speakers: Christopher Domas, Cyber Security Researcher

During executing, kernel-mode drivers dynamically allocate memory to store and process their data: Windows core kernel structures, users’ private information, and sensitive data of third-party drivers. All this data can be tampered with by kernel-mode malware. Attacks on Windows-based computers can cause not just hiding a malware driver, process privilege escalation, and stealing private data but also failures of industrial CNC machines. Windows built-in security and existing approaches do not provide the integrity and confidentiality of the allocated memory of third-party drivers. The proposed hypervisor-based system (AllMemPro) protects allocated data from being modified or stolen. AllMemPro prevents access to even 1 byte of allocated data, adapts for newly allocated memory in real time, and protects the driver without its source code. AllMemPro works well on newest Windows 10 1709 x64.

"Orphans, Corruption, Careful Write, and Logging", by Ann W. Harrison and Jim Starkey. A frequent question on the Firebird Support list is "Gfix thinks my database is corrupt. How can I fix it?" The best answer may be to fix gfix itself so it reports benign errors differently from actual corruption. The most common errors reported by gfix can simply be ignored. From the beginning of InterBase to now, gfix is the least interesting of the utilities, so it's had little attention. However it requires a great deal of knowledge of database internals, so it's not easily replaced by a separately developed tool. So, from 1984 until now, gfix has reported major corruption and benign errors as if they were all the same. What's a benign error? Usually, it's an artifact from the sudden death of a Firebird server that leaves obsolete record versions or even whole empty pages orphaned - neither released nor in use. Orphans represent lost space, but have no other damaging effect on the database. Orphaned record versions and pages occur because Firebird carefully orders its page writes to avoid the need for before or after logs. Database management systems that rely on logging for durability and recovery write each piece of data twice - once to a log and later to the database. Careful write requires discipline in programming. In 1984, careful write had performance advantages that more than made up for the need for careful programming. This talk and paper explore the cause of "orphan" pages and record versions, Firebird's careful write I/O architecture, and the trade-offs between careful write and logging today.

Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used.
