• The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced the Ph.D. Excellence Citation to
recognize outstanding doctoral research on an annual basis.
This initiative is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and aims to
promote innovation and knowledge creation as vital aspects of national development.
• This means UGC will now give a special award every year to Ph.D. holders who do
excellent research work, to encourage quality research and support the goals of NEP
2020.

• In February 2025, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced the
discontinuation of the UGC-CARE journal list.
This step aims to introduce new evaluation criteria for peer-reviewed journals, replacing
the older list that was criticized for including predatory and low-quality journals.
• The UGC-CARE journal list is a list of approved academic journals created to help
researchers publish in credible and high-quality journals.

• Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT) in Gorakhpur is set to become
the first university in Uttar Pradesh to establish a dedicated Department of Indian
Knowledge System (IKS).
• This step supports the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which
encourages the integration of India’s traditional knowledge into the modern education
system.
• This means MMMUT will start a new department focused on India’s ancient and
traditional knowledge, as part of the efforts to include it in today’s education, following
NEP 2020.

• The National Digital University (NDU) is India’s first fully digital university, launched by the Ministry of
Education as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It began its academic session in 2024 and
offers online courses only through its partner institutes, which can include both public and private
universities.
• Courses will be delivered centrally via a single platform — the Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young
Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) portal.
• The NDU is linked to the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), allowing students to earn credit points from
different institutions and providing multiple exit options. Based on their progress, students can receive
a certificate, diploma, or degree.
• In simple terms, NDU is India’s first digital university, offering online learning through a central
government portal (SWAYAM). Students can collect credits and leave with a certificate, diploma, or
degree depending on how far they study.
