IMPORTANCE OF
BREAKFAST FOR CHILDREN
Most often, kids have to leave early
for school. So they hardly get time
for breakfast, as there is always a
rush in the mornings.
Usually children do not feel hungry
early in the morning, as soon as they
get up and more often they forget
or tend to forgo, as they have to
reach school on time. It is even a
bigger problem for the slow eaters,
which most children are. Breakfast
is considered less important, as it
is just a small meal. Breakfast is a
small meal but a very important
meal for the body.
 Why do we need breakfast?
We need it to really break the
fast as the word itself suggests.
There is a long gap of 7-8 hours
after dinner and by this time the
body has already digested all the
food and used up the glucose it
had received from the last meal.
Glucose is essential for energy and
it has to be replenished to get the
level of energy that the body and
mind requires to start the day. So
breakfast is really the push required
by the body to start again.
 Benefits of breakfast :-
Children who take breakfast without
fail are always better performers.As
the body gets the nutrients required,
the child becomes more alert, more
attentive and can concentrate
better.These kids also have a
better immune system. Kids whose
stomachs are full in the morning are
seldom cranky or hyperactive.They
are on the contrary well behaved
and more creative.
 What to eat for breakfast?
An ideal breakfast should contain
all nutrients like carbohydrates,
proteins, vitamins, minerals and
fibre. Carbohydrates gives energy,
protein gives strength and perks
up the brain, vitamins and minerals
keep the body healthy and protect it
from diseases.
From cereals and breads you get
carbohydrates.
Fruitshaveeverythinglikecarbs,minerals,
vitaminsandfibre.
Milkanddairyproductsprovide
protein,mineralsandsomefattoo.
Eggs are a good source of protein.
Banana is also good; it gives the
feeling of fullness.
Light meals should be preferred for
breakfast as the digestive system is
still not ready for heavy food.
Keep changing the breakfast
menu by including items like
toasts, sandwich, idli, upma, poha,
porridge, nuts etc. Eat different
fruits on different days.
Allow the child sufficient time to eat
breakfast comfortably. Make the
child go to bed early so that they
can be woken up early. This will give
ample time to have breakfast as well
as get ready for school. In this way
sleep as well as food requirement
will be fulfilled.

Helen Keller- A lady of substance who lost her vision and speech
at a tender age and still emerged victorious fighting against all odds.
Here are a few of her famous quotes compiled as a tribute to her
on the birth anniversary which was celebrated on 27th June.
1. “When one door of happiness closes, another
opens; but often we look so long at the closed
door that we do not see the one which has been
opened for us.”
2. “I would rather walk with a friend in the dark,
than alone in the light.”
3. “The best and most beautiful things in the world
cannot be seen or even touched. They must be
felt with the heart.”
4. “One can never consent to creep when one feels
an impulse to soar.”
5. “The most pathetic person in the world is
someone who has sight but no vision.”
6. “You don’t love someone for their looks, or their
clothes, or for their fancy car, but because they
sing a song only you can hear.”
7. “Life is a succession of lessons which must be
lived to be understood.”
8. “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot
see the shadows. It’s what the sunflowers do.”
9. “A happy life consists not in the absence, but in
the mastery of hardships.”
10.	“Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve
to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an
invincible host against difficulties.”
QUOTES OF HELEN KELLER
How to deal with anger?
Anger is an emotion which we feel and experience
from others too. Even children are prone to anger.
The question is ‘how to deal with this negative
emotion’?
Let me share with you a story. One day Buddha was
walking through a village and a very angry and rude
young man came up to him and said, “You have no
right teaching others. You are as stupid as others. You
are nothing but fake.”
Buddha was not upset at all and he calmly asked the
young man, “Tell me if you buy a gift for someone,
and that person does not take it, to whom does the
gift belong?”
The man was taken aback and answered, “It would
belong to me because I bought the gift.”
Buddha smiled and said, “You are correct and the
same is true for your anger. If you become angry and
I do not get insulted, the anger returns back to you.
You are then the only one who becomes unhappy and
not me. All you have done is hurt yourself. If you want
to stop hurting yourself you need to get rid of your
anger and become loving instead. When you hate
others, you yourself become unhappy. But when you
love others, everyone is happy.”
The young man listened carefully to these words of
wisdom of the Buddha.
“You are right, O Enlightened One! He said, “Please
teach me the path of love. I wish to become your
follower.”
Buddha answered kindly, “Of course, I teach anyone
who truly wants to learn. Come with me.”
I hope now you know how to deal with anger,
whether it is yours or comes from another.
After all, love conquers all.

Life is no less than a roller coaster
ride for us in these times. Science
and technology is developing by
leaps and bounds giving rise to a
surge of benefits enjoyed by this
generation.
Children have become smart and
savvy ahead of their times. So
where does this leave parents to
guide, nurture and groom them
as near perfect human beings?
There is an underlying, perennial
stress where bringing up a child
is concerned. It is actually a
challenge where parents do find
themselves in a whirlpool of
emotions namely-tension, anxiety,
fear, uncertainty, etc.There is a
rat race to keep up with the times
and the pressure is mounting day
in and day out on both the parents
and children.
Considering all this, many
questions crop up in our minds.
Are parents not taking it easy?
Are children not able to enjoy the
simplicities and little pleasures
of childhood? Is our perspective
changing regarding the real
meaning of life?What picture
are we portraying to them about
life? How much transparency
a parent and the child have in
their relationship?The queries
are endless and my mind is still
groping for the satisfactory
answers and solutions.
As a teacher and as a parent I
have arrived at some beliefs and
thoughts which I would like to
share with you. Firstly I believe,
no matter how much the world
advances, certain basics values
and virtues will remain as the
foundation of our lives. Parent
should take on the responsibilities
to strongly imbibe the wrong and
right in the minds of their children.
Our relationship with our children
needs to be transparent.This
happens only when we give them
required respect and adequate
space to grow.This will provide
them with a sense of responsibility
and make them realize that they
are individual entities. Further, this
will infuse them with confidence
of taking decision for themselves,
giving rise to their self-esteem.
Children look up to the parents
who are non- interfering and not
nagging unnecessarily. Our fears
and anxieties should never be
reflected or imposed on them
with our dos and don’ts. So trust,
understanding and respect are the
keywords to strengthen the bond
of children with their parents.
Parents have to keep their eyes
always open to look for their
children’s needs and desires.This
makes it easy for the parents to
help their children whenever they
need their help.
Most importantly, a child’s teacher
and parent have to work as a
team. This is the only way the child
will be able to overcome his or her
imperfections and strengthen his
or her abilities.

children.Afterallitisaco-effort.
Expectationsarenotalwaysthe
parents’prerogative.Theyarealways
twosided.Thisiswhychildrenoften
lookuptousforoursupport.
Expecting too much too soon
because it is a competitive world
should be ruled out. We certainly
want to see our children grow up
as balanced human-beings and
not disoriented personalities. So
let them progress and grow with
one step at a time by giving them
ample of breathing space. After
all they are the most priceless
gifts of god to us and for the
future of our country.

Q.Your results are splendid and you have made Udgam proud.
Tell us about your preparation for the exam.
A. The preparation was evenly spread throughout the year. The
teachers were instrumental in clearing all the doubts and also
guided on how to go about with my studies.
Q.In what way did the school help you?
A. The school was very supportive from the beginning. Whether
it was solving doubts or writing extra papers or referring extra
material all the teachers were very helpful. They also guided on
how to attempt and present the paper. Without teachers’
unconditional support this would not have been possible.
Q. In addition to the school, whose help did you take for your studies?
A. Apart from the textbook prescribed by the CBSE I did refer to reference or help books for more
information and discussion with friends also was good source of knowledge.
Q. How much have your parents helped you?
A. My parents were a great source of strength throughout the year. The board exams go on for a
very long time and it may happen that often one may lose track and focus. But my parents ensured
that I remained focused on my studies and at the same time did not overdo it. My mother stayed
awake with me whenever required and took care of all my necessities. My father also helped with
my studies as he is a CA.
Q. Did you follow a time-table for self-study?
A.Yes, I did follow a timetable for self study. It is very necessary to space out the time well.
Everyone likes some subjects and dislikes some. It was the same with me. I followed a timetable
with a combination of subjects so that I did not get bored as well as utilised the time to its fullest.
Q. Did you have to forgot any of your activities/hobbies for studies?
A. In the 12th the prime focus was definitely on studies but in order to freshen my mind I listened to
music and read books.
Q. What is your advice to your juniors at Udgam?
A. I would like to tell all my juniors that they are in safest and best hands they could ever get. All
they need to do is follow teachers’ guidelines and give them their full support and they would bring
about the best in you and above all have belief and faith in yourself.
Q. What are you higher education goals?
A. At present I am pursuing Chartered Accountancy Course and further I plan to do MBA.
WHAT THEY DID RIGHT?!

the Class XII board exams. We hope this will help to motivate

A. My cousin and I used to clear each other’s difficulties and exchange practice papers. My friends were a
constant source of help and emotional support during stressful times.
Q. How much have your parents helped you?
A. My parents stood like a rock all through the journey. They believed in me and my dreams and ensured
that I had everything I needed to achieve it.They encouraged me but never pressurised me to perform.
They were a strong source of support.
My father being a Chartered Accountant discussed commerce and Economics at great lengths with me.
Q. Did you follow a time table for self study?
A.I never prepared a proper time table. However I studied for a fixed number of hours everyday. I ensured that
I paid equal attention to all subjects as scoring in every subject is equally important to score high marks.
Q. Did you have to forgo any of your activities/hobbies for studies?
A. Studying was definitely my first priority in XIIth Std. But taking a break seemed to renew my energy
and increase productivity. I therefore allocated time everyday to pursue my interests. I listened to music.
I also loved reading books. I listened to the daily news and read magazines to keep my knowledge about
the world around me up to date. In the evenings I spent some time talking with my friends.
Q. What is your advice to the juniors at Udgam?
A. I’ve a simple advice for all students. Do whatever you love but ensure that you are the best at it. Be
passionate and strive for perfection, success will be yours. I love commerce and that was my motivation
to score. When you follow your dreams, performance comes effortlessly.
Also believe in your parents and teachers and follow their instructions. What they advice is always in the
best of your interests. Consider yourself lucky to be an Udgamite. The patience and dedication of the
teachers here will help you go a long way.
Q. What are your higher educational goals?
A. I’m currently pursuing my Chartered Accountancy. However I’d like to add MBA in my qualifications
too. I intend to specialise in Finance and Economics in the future.

EMOTIVE EXPRESSIONS
When you die alive
The worst part
Of your entire life
Begins the day
When you die alive.
That day when you live
To listen to your obituary
But can’t shed tears,
On your own death
anniversary.
That day, when you are
nailed
In the coffin you selected
And dug into the ground
For the role of death you
acted.
They mock you and jeer you
But for you it’s all the same,
You are already dead -
You can’t die of shame !
Your heart beats
But it’s a stony one
Your feelings have frozen,
The interest has gone.
It is not so painful
when your soul bitterly cries
Its worse, when it leaves
While you are still alive.....

WHEN YOU DIE ALIVE
A VISIT TO THALTEJ MUNICIPAL SCHOOL
Udgam School for Children has recently
adopted theThaltej Municipal School with the
aim to improve it and provide good quality
education to the children studying there. These
children mostly belong to poor households
and Udgam has taken the initiative of uplifting
them. Our school has been selflessly taking care
of the needs of the children of this school since
August 2013.
The students of Class XII Commerce had been
given the opportunity of contributing to the donations made to the school this time.We generously
donated the money which we had earned in the ‘Earn while you learn’ project last year. The school bought
stationery items for all children of the municipality school with this money and students of XII standard
distributed the same.
The municipality school was very small but did not lack cleanliness due to earlier efforts made by Udgam.
The children were from unprivileged households but were very well mannered. They said ‘ThankYou’
and showed their happiness at receiving the stationery kit. They all waited patiently for their turn. The
happiness on their faces made us realise how an everyday need for us is a luxury to them. The visit was an
unusual one which made us value what we have in life and taught us not to take anything for granted.

Strange demands by the FIFA teams
You think superstars have strange demands, wait till you hear what the football teams
asked for during theWorld Cup. Some of the craziest things demanded include:
• Portugal demanded 6 security guards with two assigned to Cristiano Ronaldo.
• France demanded two types of liquid soaps. The players’ room should also be
	 identical even in colour.
• Uruguay demanded that each room should have silent air-conditioning units.
• Algeria wanted each room to have a Quran.
• EcuadordemandedeveryroomshouldhaveaneverydaybasketofEcuadorianbananas.
• Japan wanted a Jacuzzi in each room
• Germany on the other hand didn’t like the accommodations provided and went
ahead and built their ownWorld Cup Hotel and training camp. Beat that!

“Let me be like me, O mother! Not akin to another,
Not caged by expectations, not bound by conditions.
Let me live my life of freedom, happy monarch of my kingdom.
Free to fly and fall and rise, as myself and not in any guise.
Cherish me for whaat I am, and not for what I could be,
Play with me while you can, before I soar up and flee.”

  • 1. Please send your writings and drawings to newsletter@udgamschool.com Mrs. VILLOO PARIKH, Head of Preprimary Section IMPORTANCE OF BREAKFAST FOR CHILDREN Most often, kids have to leave early for school. So they hardly get time for breakfast, as there is always a rush in the mornings. Usually children do not feel hungry early in the morning, as soon as they get up and more often they forget or tend to forgo, as they have to reach school on time. It is even a bigger problem for the slow eaters, which most children are. Breakfast is considered less important, as it is just a small meal. Breakfast is a small meal but a very important meal for the body.  Why do we need breakfast? We need it to really break the fast as the word itself suggests. There is a long gap of 7-8 hours after dinner and by this time the body has already digested all the food and used up the glucose it had received from the last meal. Glucose is essential for energy and it has to be replenished to get the level of energy that the body and mind requires to start the day. So breakfast is really the push required by the body to start again.  Benefits of breakfast :- Children who take breakfast without fail are always better performers. As the body gets the nutrients required, the child becomes more alert, more attentive and can concentrate better. These kids also have a better immune system. Kids whose stomachs are full in the morning are seldom cranky or hyperactive. They are on the contrary well behaved and more creative.  What to eat for breakfast? An ideal breakfast should contain all nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and fibre. Carbohydrates gives energy, protein gives strength and perks up the brain, vitamins and minerals keep the body healthy and protect it from diseases. From cereals and breads you get carbohydrates. Fruitshaveeverythinglikecarbs, minerals, vitaminsandfibre. Milkanddairyproductsprovide protein, mineralsandsomefattoo. Eggs are a good source of protein. Banana is also good; it gives the feeling of fullness. Light meals should be preferred for breakfast as the digestive system is still not ready for heavy food. Keep changing the breakfast menu by including items like toasts, sandwich, idli, upma, poha, porridge, nuts etc. Eat different fruits on different days. Allow the child sufficient time to eat breakfast comfortably. Make the child go to bed early so that they can be woken up early. This will give ample time to have breakfast as well as get ready for school. In this way sleep as well as food requirement will be fulfilled. FUN AMIDST THE SCORCHING SUN UDGAM MATTERSVOLUME 2 ISSUE 2 JUNE 2014 1
  • 2. 2 Helen Keller- A lady of substance who lost her vision and speech at a tender age and still emerged victorious fighting against all odds. Here are a few of her famous quotes compiled as a tribute to her on the birth anniversary which was celebrated on 27th June. 1. “When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” 2. “I would rather walk with a friend in the dark, than alone in the light.” 3. “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.” 4. “One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar.” 5. “The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight but no vision.” 6. “You don’t love someone for their looks, or their clothes, or for their fancy car, but because they sing a song only you can hear.” 7. “Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood.” 8. “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows. It’s what the sunflowers do.” 9. “A happy life consists not in the absence, but in the mastery of hardships.” 10. “Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.” QUOTES OF HELEN KELLER
  • 3. How to deal with anger? Anger is an emotion which we feel and experience from others too. Even children are prone to anger. The question is ‘how to deal with this negative emotion’? Let me share with you a story. One day Buddha was walking through a village and a very angry and rude young man came up to him and said, “You have no right teaching others. You are as stupid as others. You are nothing but fake.” Buddha was not upset at all and he calmly asked the young man, “Tell me if you buy a gift for someone, and that person does not take it, to whom does the gift belong?” The man was taken aback and answered, “It would belong to me because I bought the gift.” Buddha smiled and said, “You are correct and the same is true for your anger. If you become angry and I do not get insulted, the anger returns back to you. You are then the only one who becomes unhappy and not me. All you have done is hurt yourself. If you want to stop hurting yourself you need to get rid of your anger and become loving instead. When you hate others, you yourself become unhappy. But when you love others, everyone is happy.” The young man listened carefully to these words of wisdom of the Buddha. “You are right, O Enlightened One! He said, “Please teach me the path of love. I wish to become your follower.” Buddha answered kindly, “Of course, I teach anyone who truly wants to learn. Come with me.” I hope now you know how to deal with anger, whether it is yours or comes from another. After all, love conquers all. • 9. 9 Life is no less than a roller coaster ride for us in these times. Science and technology is developing by leaps and bounds giving rise to a surge of benefits enjoyed by this generation. Children have become smart and savvy ahead of their times. So where does this leave parents to guide, nurture and groom them as near perfect human beings? There is an underlying, perennial stress where bringing up a child is concerned. It is actually a challenge where parents do find themselves in a whirlpool of emotions namely-tension, anxiety, fear, uncertainty, etc. There is a rat race to keep up with the times and the pressure is mounting day in and day out on both the parents and children. Considering all this, many questions crop up in our minds. Are parents not taking it easy? Are children not able to enjoy the simplicities and little pleasures of childhood? Is our perspective changing regarding the real meaning of life? What picture are we portraying to them about life? How much transparency a parent and the child have in their relationship? The queries are endless and my mind is still groping for the satisfactory answers and solutions. As a teacher and as a parent I have arrived at some beliefs and thoughts which I would like to share with you. Firstly I believe, no matter how much the world advances, certain basics values and virtues will remain as the foundation of our lives. Parent should take on the responsibilities to strongly imbibe the wrong and right in the minds of their children. Our relationship with our children needs to be transparent. This happens only when we give them required respect and adequate space to grow. This will provide them with a sense of responsibility and make them realize that they are individual entities. Further, this will infuse them with confidence of taking decision for themselves, giving rise to their self-esteem. Children look up to the parents who are non- interfering and not nagging unnecessarily. Our fears and anxieties should never be reflected or imposed on them with our dos and don’ts. So trust, understanding and respect are the keywords to strengthen the bond of children with their parents. Parents have to keep their eyes always open to look for their children’s needs and desires. This makes it easy for the parents to help their children whenever they need their help. Most importantly, a child’s teacher and parent have to work as a team. This is the only way the child will be able to overcome his or her imperfections and strengthen his or her abilities. GoingbythesewaysIhavefeltbetter, happierandeasiertobringupmy children.Afterallitisaco-effort. Expectationsarenotalwaysthe parents’prerogative.Theyarealways twosided.Thisiswhychildrenoften lookuptousforoursupport. Expecting too much too soon because it is a competitive world should be ruled out. We certainly want to see our children grow up as balanced human-beings and not disoriented personalities. So let them progress and grow with one step at a time by giving them ample of breathing space. After all they are the most priceless gifts of god to us and for the future of our country. Mrs. NIHARIKA CHAUHAN Teacher, Preprimary Section RADIANT REFLECTIONS Trust, Respect and Understanding, important in child’s growth

  • 11. 11 Q.Your results are splendid and you have made Udgam proud. Tell us about your preparation for the exam. A. The preparation was evenly spread throughout the year. The teachers were instrumental in clearing all the doubts and also guided on how to go about with my studies. Q.In what way did the school help you? A. The school was very supportive from the beginning. Whether it was solving doubts or writing extra papers or referring extra material all the teachers were very helpful. They also guided on how to attempt and present the paper. Without teachers’ unconditional support this would not have been possible. Q. In addition to the school, whose help did you take for your studies? A. Apart from the textbook prescribed by the CBSE I did refer to reference or help books for more information and discussion with friends also was good source of knowledge. Q. How much have your parents helped you? A. My parents were a great source of strength throughout the year. The board exams go on for a very long time and it may happen that often one may lose track and focus. But my parents ensured that I remained focused on my studies and at the same time did not overdo it. My mother stayed awake with me whenever required and took care of all my necessities. My father also helped with my studies as he is a CA. Q. Did you follow a time-table for self-study? A.Yes, I did follow a timetable for self study. It is very necessary to space out the time well. Everyone likes some subjects and dislikes some. It was the same with me. I followed a timetable with a combination of subjects so that I did not get bored as well as utilised the time to its fullest. Q. Did you have to forgot any of your activities/hobbies for studies? A. In the 12th the prime focus was definitely on studies but in order to freshen my mind I listened to music and read books. Q. What is your advice to your juniors at Udgam? A. I would like to tell all my juniors that they are in safest and best hands they could ever get. All they need to do is follow teachers’ guidelines and give them their full support and they would bring about the best in you and above all have belief and faith in yourself. Q. What are you higher education goals? A. At present I am pursuing Chartered Accountancy Course and further I plan to do MBA. WHAT THEY DID RIGHT?! Read the interviews of two of our students who scored well in the Class XII board exams. We hope this will help to motivate and guide others to do well too. NUPUR DALAL - 95.6% AN INTERVIEW WITH

They were a strong source of support. My father being a Chartered Accountant discussed commerce and Economics at great lengths with me. Q. Did you follow a time table for self study? A.I never prepared a proper time table. However I studied for a fixed number of hours everyday. I ensured that I paid equal attention to all subjects as scoring in every subject is equally important to score high marks. Q. Did you have to forgo any of your activities/hobbies for studies? A. Studying was definitely my first priority in XIIth Std. But taking a break seemed to renew my energy and increase productivity. I therefore allocated time everyday to pursue my interests. I listened to music. I also loved reading books. I listened to the daily news and read magazines to keep my knowledge about the world around me up to date. In the evenings I spent some time talking with my friends. Q. What is your advice to the juniors at Udgam? A. I’ve a simple advice for all students. Do whatever you love but ensure that you are the best at it. Be passionate and strive for perfection, success will be yours. I love commerce and that was my motivation to score. When you follow your dreams, performance comes effortlessly. Also believe in your parents and teachers and follow their instructions. What they advice is always in the best of your interests. Consider yourself lucky to be an Udgamite. The patience and dedication of the teachers here will help you go a long way. Q. What are your higher educational goals? A. I’m currently pursuing my Chartered Accountancy. However I’d like to add MBA in my qualifications too. I intend to specialise in Finance and Economics in the future. • 13. 13 EMOTIVE EXPRESSIONS When you die alive The worst part Of your entire life Begins the day When you die alive. That day when you live To listen to your obituary But can’t shed tears, On your own death anniversary. That day, when you are nailed In the coffin you selected And dug into the ground For the role of death you acted. They mock you and jeer you But for you it’s all the same, You are already dead - You can’t die of shame ! Your heart beats But it’s a stony one Your feelings have frozen, The interest has gone. It is not so painful when your soul bitterly cries Its worse, when it leaves While you are still alive..... RAJVEE SHAH, CLASS X WHEN YOU DIE ALIVE A VISIT TO THALTEJ MUNICIPAL SCHOOL Udgam School for Children has recently adopted theThaltej Municipal School with the aim to improve it and provide good quality education to the children studying there. These children mostly belong to poor households and Udgam has taken the initiative of uplifting them. Our school has been selflessly taking care of the needs of the children of this school since August 2013. The students of Class XII Commerce had been given the opportunity of contributing to the donations made to the school this time.We generously donated the money which we had earned in the ‘Earn while you learn’ project last year. The school bought stationery items for all children of the municipality school with this money and students of XII standard distributed the same. The municipality school was very small but did not lack cleanliness due to earlier efforts made by Udgam. The children were from unprivileged households but were very well mannered. They said ‘ThankYou’ and showed their happiness at receiving the stationery kit. They all waited patiently for their turn. The happiness on their faces made us realise how an everyday need for us is a luxury to them. The visit was an unusual one which made us value what we have in life and taught us not to take anything for granted.
