A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
Life is Cool in School!

A breath of fresh air,
Can lighten hearts and fill
one with cheer.
The talk of the school has been the sleek classrooms
replete with air-conditioning. It is indeed a welcome
change and has been much lauded by all. Ahmedabad,
beingessentiallyacityendowedwithhightemperatures
for most of the year, can become a veritable hotpot
duringtheday.Addtothisloudblaringnoiseandjostling
for air in a class full of students and the situation can be
quite uncomfortable. So the air tight and sound proof
windows and doors, the spanking new false ceiling with
‘easy on the eyes’ LED lights and of course the magic
machine that turns stale and warm air to fresh and cool
breeze, makes school a place of joy and learning. Our
cover story is all about the difference air-conditioning,
the much needed amenity, made to the students and
the teachers.
Our school has won prestigious awards and has
been ranked in the Times Education Icons for 2017 in
several categories. We bring you a coverage of the
ceremony and awards. We have also covered a common
issue ‘childhood depression’ by our counsellor with
homeopathic remedy for such issues. Our students have
penned thought provoking articles on Social media and
Indian ecommerce which you will love to read. The
heart-tugger is Shrutuja’s poem dedicated to her twin
brother whom she misses more than ever.

NO AC…NO SCHOOL
When Kalyani Shah asked her mother if she could stay at home one sunny day in June,
her mother was perplexed. When a hale and hearty vivacious child who apparently loves
going to school wants to remain at home for no good reason, it is a cause for concern.
Upon questioning the actual reason was revealed. “It is too hot in the classroom and I feel
uncomfortable”.Theclassroomsweretoohotandstuffyandmadethechildrenfeelsickafter
spending half a day in the crowded rooms. Like Kalyani, several other children were trying
to coax their parents to not send them to school. In some cases, they even resorted to lying
and finding other plausible reasons for not going to school as they felt ‘feeling too warm’
would not be understood by the elders. They had heard the elders always reflecting on ‘our
times’ in such a manner that the present generation seemed to be cribbing about nothing
while enjoying a cosy life.We do say things like ‘Nowadays children are over-indulged.They
cannot bear any kind of discomfort and do not know how to struggle. In our days we were
blah blah blah.” While this is true to some extent, the situation has changed from then to
now in more ways than one. The comfort level the children are used to along with rising
temperatures have made it worse.
10 years ago the city seldom witnessed temperatures above 40 degrees. Even the classroom
strength was less and therefore less congested. So if a child refuses to go to school because
it is too hot, somewhere we can see the justification. Except for two months in a year, our
city experiences weather ranging from hot and dry to hot and humid. Children are used to
air-conditioned environment at home and even the places they visit. So suddenly when they
have to spend long hours of hotter part of the day in a non-air-conditioned set-up, they feel
uncomfortable. This reflects upon their health, behaviour, regularity and performance.
So we are thankful to the management of Udgam School for installing air-conditioning in
the school despite the cost and the hitches.

5 UDGAM MATTERS
1. BEST SCHOOL AMONG CBSE
SCHOOLS INTHE CITY
When Udgam School switched over to
CBSE board to widen the horizon and
enable students to compete at All India
level, the gigantic step involved enormous
efforts on the part of the management,
the Principal and teachers and staff. The
change over required conformity to CBSE
rules and 100% adherence to the syllabus
among other things. Executive Director Mr
Manan Choksi, Director Ms Pratima Patell
and erstwhile Principal Ms Radhika Iyer,
alongwith senior teachers Mrs. Manjari Jain
and Mrs. Manju Malaviya, Administrator
Mr Dhimant Choksi, Admin Assistant Mr
Sunil Raval, Senior Clerks Mr Sanjay Agnihotri and Mrs Ajitha CR and
others, worked extremely hard to make the transition as smooth as
possible. The next step was making the school ready as a centre for
board examination which required strict adherence to guidelines
which was again successfully handled.
Now with over 5000 students, spread out over two state-of-art
campuses, the school is synonymous with quality education reflected
in the year on year results, massive infrastructure, cutting-edge
technology and high parent satisfaction.
Today it is no small feat that after less than a decade of adapting to
CBSE board, our school has been declared as the best CBSE school in
the city.

2. BEST SCHOOL FOR PARENT
CONNECT AND SATISFACTION
We reach out to our parents in all possible
ways...namely through our unique
mobile app (Udgam Connection), emails,
WhatsApp, SMS, web portal, social media,
school magazine and so on. Our super fast
Content and Communication Team relies
heavily on technology to ensure that all

to all concerned. Parallely, our teachers and
staff are always reachable either on phone
or through emails, a part from PTMs. So it is
not surprising that we have won recognition
for being the best school for ParentConnect
and Satisfaction in the city.
3. BEST PRESCHOOL FOR
CURRICULUM AND OUTDOOR
ACTIVITIES
The Udgam Preschool in Satellite follows
a very child-friendly curriculum so that the
child’s first steps are pleasant and makes
school a fun place to come to everyday.
Our play way methods weave in important
lessons of life like traffic rules, colours of the
earth, good manners, confidence building,
animals and plants, art and craft, language
training, discipline, general knowledge,
celebration of festivals and many more
to increase awareness levels of the little
ones. Almost all topics involve outdoor activities and even visits to
farms, zoo, traffic park to make the knowledge long lasting and fun.
Executive Director Mr Manan Choksi, Director Mrs Villoo Parikh and
teachers and staff have worked very hard to make the preschool of an
international standard. Following the motto of ‘best at the base’ they
have ensured that the preschool is a perfect stepping stone to the big
school.

8 UDGAM MATTERS
The period of time starting from
2007 to 2015 was truly a golden
period for startups all aroud
the globe.We saw the founding
of Flipkart in 2007. Uber was
incorporated in 2009 and the
consumer internet space was
changed forever. Snapdeal
pivoted from a coupons business
to an online marketplace in 2011.
Indian Startups such as Zomato,
PayTM, Oyo and Shopclues
brought in disruption in their
various areas of business.
However the real
problem is the money.
The coming of big names in
venture capital all around the
world saw a massive rise in
funding and valuations. Tiger
Global has placed a bet of more
than $1 billion on Flipkart.
Softbank pumped in more than
$700 million in Snapdeal at a
valuation of $6 billion, only
to scurry around for buyers at
approximately one-sixth of that.
Softbank’s ex-President and
COO,Nikesh Arora, displayed
naĂŻve courage and placed bets
on Ola, Housing.com and Oyo.
However, he quit just because
Masayoshi Son, founder of
Softbank Corp. intended to stay
at the helm for about a decade
more.
Let us focus on the evolution of
e-commerce in India. Flipkart
started off as an online store for
books, and slowly and steadily

kept adding higher margins
categories. Tiger Global’s Lee
Fixel, fascinated by the sheer size
of opportunity in India, placed a
massive bet on Flipkart.Snapdeal
alsofoundahugepatroninNikesh
Arora of Softbank and started the
price war for the higher discount.
Each one was riding high in their
own ivory tower. They were
celebrated as Gods. Massive
valuations, swanky offices, huge
pay packages, employees from
the best schools in India and
abroad. Everything seemed to be
working out for them.
The entry of Amazon into India
in 2013, with a huge war chest of
$5 billion, was the turning point
for all e-commerce startups in
the country. They started to
become more serious into their
business. Amazon re-shaped
the e-commerce industry in
India, by offering much higher
discounts, a very reliable and
likeable consumer support, and
a very efficient return policy.
Against approaching India via
the inorganic way, i.e. to acquire
an Indian company and build its
operations, Amazon entered
India via the organic way, i.e. to
setup their own operations under
the original company name.
Amazon always believed in the
philosophy “Make versus Buy”
and they have fulfilled that.
Flipkart’s and Snapdeal’s funds
had dried up and they were
looking for more funds. Amazon
was steadily moving up in
rankings in every respect. The
brand name and trust associated
with Amazon saw customers
moving towards it.Also, lucrative
offers like the Prime membership
gained many customers. Jeff

India.
After playing catchup with
Snapdeal for a year, Amazon
grabbed the second spot, while
Flipkart was still numero uno.
Then in April of this year, Flipkart
closed a massive funding round
of $1.4 billion from Microsoft,
Tencent, and eBay, and as part
of the deal, Flipkart acquired
the India arm of eBay. After
this funding round, came the
stunning news that Flipkart may
be in the process of acquiring
Snapdeal for $1 billion.This wave
of consolidation brought about
a much needed change in the
startup ecosystem.
In this article, I have primarily
focused on e-commerce in India.
And that too about Flipkart,
Snapdeal and Amazon in a
nutshell.

12 UDGAM MATTERS
Hence to enable shutting of
windows and doors to make the
classrooms soundproof, the need
for installing air-conditioning
units in each and every classroom
was created. And these AC
units needed to be the silent
types, preferably a split AC. Also
need even cooling in the entire
classroom. Only a cassette AC
with 4 directional air flows suited
both the purpose.
Italsonecessitatedtheinstallation
of false ceiling which enables
better acoustics by absorbing
sound and reducing reverberation
orecho.Falseceilingsalsoreduced
the heat transmission from the
ceiling in to the classroom.
Changing the ceiling gave rise
to the need to change the lights
and the existing tube lights were
replaced with LED lights.
Installation of air-conditioning
meant a very important
requirement in the form of more
power. So we needed to have
additional power substation. In
additiontothiswealsohadtolook
at revamping the entire wiring to
enable the installation of the AC
units and LED lights. We also had
to make arrangements to drain
the AC water properly without
stagnation or spillage.
Apart from classes being more
ambient to learning, there are
some additional benefits that
are quite important to ignore.
‘Teacher’s laryngitis’ is a very
commonphenomenonandaffects
about one-third of teachers as
they need to strain their voice
to be heard by the entire class.
Reduction in external noise mean
now the teachers need not ‘shout’
at the top of their voices.
The cool temperature prevents
germs from spreading and hence
helps to prevent communicable
diseases like common cold,
influenza and the like. Mosquitoes
breed in moist and warm places
and since AC removes moisture
and reduces temperature, deadly
diseases caused by these vectors,
such as dengue, malaria and
chikungunya, are also prevented.
August-September 2017
13 UDGAM MATTERS
Children and adults feel more
tired in hot weather and cannot
perform to their optimum
capacity. The cool temperature of
classrooms helps them do better
in classes and be more alert and
productive. It reduces fatigue in
teachers and students to a great
extent.
Ambient temperatures help
to calm down children with
behavioural issues like ADHD
and ADS. So they are able to
concentratebetterintheirlessons.
Research has proved that these
children benefit tremendously
from the use of air-conditioning
in classrooms and reduced noise
levels.
The LED lights are very pleasant
to the eyes and reduces glare,
especially from the smartboards.
These lights are environment
friendly and makes our carbon
footprint less.
All these changes have increased
the aesthetics of the classrooms
and made them more pleasant.
Since students spend a lot of time
in these closed spaces, it spruces
up their spirits to be in a beautiful
set up.
So air-conditioning of Udgam
School was not done to provide
luxurytothestudentsorteachers.
It was propelled by the need to
make academics even better by
improving teacher and student
efficiency.

14 UDGAM MATTERS
‘Roses, Roses all the way’ the
famous phrase is remodelled
to ‘Google, Google all the way.’
The introduction of technology
has brought drastic changes and
has given mankind a facelift.
Technology has led the way
for many tech savvy minds to
developvarioussocialnetworking
sites like YouTube, Facebook,
Instagram orTwitter.
These sites were introduced
to encourage communication.
Quoting Simon Mainwaring,
“Social media is not about the
exploitation of technology
but service to community.”
The positive aspects of social
media are in abundance. The
contemporary world has made
communication across the globe
a cake-walk. Social networking
enables easy and instant connect
with the outside world, thus
GLobal is now GLocal. Life is
muchsimplertoday.Studentscan
easily catch up on their missed
out work through social sites like
Whatsapp. The news apps keep
flashing the latest information
which makes us well-informed.
Social networking sites provide
a wider platform to showcase
talent. Today these networking
sites are the biggest mechanism
for new businesses. It provides a
voice to the common man.
However, the disadvantages
outnumber the advantages.
Defaming can easily be done
via these networking sites.
Fake messages can easily be
circulated which can cause
confusion especially if the
validity is not checked. The
addiction of social networking
cannot be ignored. People have
become lackadaisical. Shaming
of a person can give birth to
insecurities and psychological
scars. People hack into others’
accounts to play pranks or steal
confidential information.
Mark Zuckerberg has said,
“Facebook was not originally
created to be a company. It
was built to accomplish a social
mission of making the world
more open and connected.” Still,
people do not comprehend the
actual use of social media. In a
nutshell, we can say that social
media does impact the lives
of people positively as well as
negatively. It is our job to weigh
out the pros and cons.

Social Media-
A present or a curse?By: DanayshaTulsiani IX-G
Today social media plays a
major role in our lives. Sites such
as Facebook, Instagram have
been the ideal way to know and
connect to new people and learn
new things. They make us feel
connected to a larger community
with an ease; but virtual
connections also have their own
disadvantages. Social media has
created a blur comprehension of
the word Relationship. We often
log-on to connections made on
social media rather than giving
meaningful time to relationships
around us.
Another immoral attack of social
media is Cyber Bullying. The
easy availability of social media
to kids of this generation makes
them an obvious victim of cyber
bullying. The devastation of
these attacks leaves a person
with many mental scars and self-
doubts. In several cases victims
have also committed suicide due
to depression and complexity
created by it. Cyber bullying has
spread widely among the youth,
with 42% reporting that they’ve
been victims in 2010. While many
companies use social media to
connect with their clients, it has
proved to be one of the most
distracting things among their
employees. British companies
have claimed to lose 2.2 billion in
a year due to this phenomenon.
Employees are more concerned
about what their friends post
rather than using media for
work. These sites encourage
people to be more public about
their personal lives. Moreover,
every picture is available to the
public; a picture of having shots
with your friends may seem
harmless but could be a huge
disappointment in the context of
an employee doing a background
check. Limitations are also a
part of these sites like hiding
posts, blocking users and many
more but are often forgotten
and ignored by us. Social media
is both a treasure and a trap, it
depends upon us now to use it
intelligently.

resolve commuting time and
reduce the carbon footprint
while making travelling
comfortable and fast. However,
every mammoth task has a few
teething issues and sacrifices
need to be made before one can
enjoy the fruits. In this case the
upcoming metro rail route that is
going to come up along Drive In
Road passing right in front of the
Thaltej Campus is sure to cause
a few expected issues. Already
there is traffic congestion leading
to late coming.
Udgam School provides
transport facilities to all students
from Nursery to Class XII. The
transport system is hassle-free
and convenient. School transport
is available at a nominal charge.
SATELLITE CAMPUS –
Playgroup to Senior KG:
We provide Safe andComfortable
AC Wingers that ensure more
space for smaller children for all
shifts. This ensures comfortable
hassle-free travel and timely pick

traffic congestion at busy cross
sections near the school.
THALTEJ CAMPUS –
Class I to XII:
We provide Safe and
Comfortable buses that are
spacious and air-conditioned.
There is a lady attendant in
each and every bus. These
school buses ply on most routes
of the city. Students get more
space to sit and keep their bags
too. They do not have to take in
the air and noise pollution from
outside besides reaching the
school fresh and on time.
Use of school bus is optional,
however, we encourage all
to avail this facility to avoid
traffic congestion and reduce
the carbon footprint. Along
with bus, we even provide

Alarming
bells of
Childhood
Depression
Kena’s parents didn’t really notice anything unusual about her until they had another child when
Kena was 5 years old. Now Kena is 6 and has stopped getting excited about anything. If everything
is going exactly her way, she is happy. The rest of the time, she is upset at someone or something
for ruining her day. Most things seem to be an effort for her. She spends endless hours watching
TV if her mother lets her.
Surya is 9. He has been enjoying his school and studies fairly well. After summer vacation, he seems
to have become less and less excited about school. He thinks that others are harassing him. He
doesn’t even want to go to school some days, but his parents make him. He wants to sleep with his
mom. He has lost interest in playing with his friends. He has started telling his parents, “You don’t
like me”. When they take him out to McDonalds, he likes it, but he is not as enthusiastic as he used
to be. His mother often notices him sitting in a chair with a horrible look on his face, doing nothing.

Above are the examples of children
showing signs of being sad or upset
with no good reason. Is it just
being sad or something more? It is
importanttounderstandthatbeing
sad and being depressed are too
different things. Children do have
good and bad days. But for some
children, the bad days last longer
and are more serious. Children
who are ‘down’ often and for long
periods are at risk of developing
depression. Depression among
children was almost unheard
of a few years ago. However,
today, mental health experts are
swarmed with cases of depression
and anxiety among kids as young
as six and seven. They believe
that children are increasingly
stressed due to pressure of studies,
overexposure to social media,
cyber-bullying, etc. Recognizing
depression in children is important
so that help can be given as soon as
possible. Some of the early signs of
depression that we should watch
out for are-
• Angry outbursts
• Anxiety
• Continuous feelings of
hopelessness and sadness
• Changes in appetite
• Social withdrawal
• Chronic physical pain
• Decreased energy
• Changes in sleep patterns
• Poor performance in school
• Clinginess – becoming more
dependent on any parent
• Sensitivity to criticism
• Thoughts of self harm
• Inability to concentrate
• Regression
• Inability to experience
excitement or pleasure
Not all children have all of these
symptoms. In fact, many of them
will show different symptoms
at different times. Children with
depression may see the world in a
very negative way. This childhood
depression doesn’t go away on its
own. It needs immediate action to
manage depression.
What can you do?
• Make an appointment to speak
with the class teacher or school
counsellor. Working together
with school staff will help in
finding the best ways to support
your child at school.
• Visit the Homoeopathy clinic
to help the child get rid of
depression faster.
• If your child is having negative
thoughts, you can model
positive ways of thinking. For
example, you can say things
like, ‘I really enjoy it when we do
this’, ‘That was fun!’ or ‘I knew
you could do it’.
• Manage your child’s stress and
tension by making regular time
for relaxing activities that your
child enjoys. Regular family
routines can also help to cut
down stress.
• Help your child learn relaxation
strategies. Focus on
exercises on deep breathing,
progressive muscle relaxation,
visualisations and mindfulness.
• Maketimetotalkwithyourchild
and listen to how he or she is
feeling. You could do this when
you’re making dinner together,
reading a book together, going
for a walk, driving somewhere
or playing together at home.
Children today are sensitive and
are prone to such mental health
problems. Hence it is the need of
an hour that we become aware
and alert our children and their
surroundings for their healthier
future.

Since you have
been gone
The grass seems less green,
The earth feels less clean.
The sky seems dull blue,
Awake all night without any clue.
Every day seems less bright,
- Shrutuja Shah, Class X
Every second you are disappearing from my sight.
Your emptiness cannot be filled.
And my pain can never be healed.
I’m trying to believe you are gone for my sake.
But the truth is that I cannot behave more fake.
You will always stick to my heart.
Like our nerf guns and darts.
The above poem has been written by Shrutuja in remembrance of her twin brother, Smayan
Shah who passed away after an illness recently. Smayan is remembered very fondly by all of us at
Udgam School as a bright and vivacious child whom even God couldn’t live without for long.

AC in School: Luxury or Necessity?

  • 1. AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2017 udgammatters AC in School Luxury or Necessity?
  • 2. 2 UDGAM MATTERS A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Life is Cool in School! - Mrs. Sagarika Sahana Content Manager A breath of fresh air, Can lighten hearts and fill one with cheer. The talk of the school has been the sleek classrooms replete with air-conditioning. It is indeed a welcome change and has been much lauded by all. Ahmedabad, beingessentiallyacityendowedwithhightemperatures for most of the year, can become a veritable hotpot duringtheday.Addtothisloudblaringnoiseandjostling for air in a class full of students and the situation can be quite uncomfortable. So the air tight and sound proof windows and doors, the spanking new false ceiling with ‘easy on the eyes’ LED lights and of course the magic machine that turns stale and warm air to fresh and cool breeze, makes school a place of joy and learning. Our cover story is all about the difference air-conditioning, the much needed amenity, made to the students and the teachers. Our school has won prestigious awards and has been ranked in the Times Education Icons for 2017 in several categories. We bring you a coverage of the ceremony and awards. We have also covered a common issue ‘childhood depression’ by our counsellor with homeopathic remedy for such issues. Our students have penned thought provoking articles on Social media and Indian ecommerce which you will love to read. The heart-tugger is Shrutuja’s poem dedicated to her twin brother whom she misses more than ever. • 3. 3 UDGAM MATTERS NO AC…NO SCHOOL When Kalyani Shah asked her mother if she could stay at home one sunny day in June, her mother was perplexed. When a hale and hearty vivacious child who apparently loves going to school wants to remain at home for no good reason, it is a cause for concern. Upon questioning the actual reason was revealed. “It is too hot in the classroom and I feel uncomfortable”.Theclassroomsweretoohotandstuffyandmadethechildrenfeelsickafter spending half a day in the crowded rooms. Like Kalyani, several other children were trying to coax their parents to not send them to school. In some cases, they even resorted to lying and finding other plausible reasons for not going to school as they felt ‘feeling too warm’ would not be understood by the elders. They had heard the elders always reflecting on ‘our times’ in such a manner that the present generation seemed to be cribbing about nothing while enjoying a cosy life.We do say things like ‘Nowadays children are over-indulged.They cannot bear any kind of discomfort and do not know how to struggle. In our days we were blah blah blah.” While this is true to some extent, the situation has changed from then to now in more ways than one. The comfort level the children are used to along with rising temperatures have made it worse. 10 years ago the city seldom witnessed temperatures above 40 degrees. Even the classroom strength was less and therefore less congested. So if a child refuses to go to school because it is too hot, somewhere we can see the justification. Except for two months in a year, our city experiences weather ranging from hot and dry to hot and humid. Children are used to air-conditioned environment at home and even the places they visit. So suddenly when they have to spend long hours of hotter part of the day in a non-air-conditioned set-up, they feel uncomfortable. This reflects upon their health, behaviour, regularity and performance. So we are thankful to the management of Udgam School for installing air-conditioning in the school despite the cost and the hitches. - Surbhi Shah, a relieved parent August-September 2017

  • 5. 5 UDGAM MATTERS 1. BEST SCHOOL AMONG CBSE SCHOOLS INTHE CITY When Udgam School switched over to CBSE board to widen the horizon and enable students to compete at All India level, the gigantic step involved enormous efforts on the part of the management, the Principal and teachers and staff. The change over required conformity to CBSE rules and 100% adherence to the syllabus among other things. Executive Director Mr Manan Choksi, Director Ms Pratima Patell and erstwhile Principal Ms Radhika Iyer, alongwith senior teachers Mrs. Manjari Jain and Mrs. Manju Malaviya, Administrator Mr Dhimant Choksi, Admin Assistant Mr Sunil Raval, Senior Clerks Mr Sanjay Agnihotri and Mrs Ajitha CR and others, worked extremely hard to make the transition as smooth as possible. The next step was making the school ready as a centre for board examination which required strict adherence to guidelines which was again successfully handled. Now with over 5000 students, spread out over two state-of-art campuses, the school is synonymous with quality education reflected in the year on year results, massive infrastructure, cutting-edge technology and high parent satisfaction. Today it is no small feat that after less than a decade of adapting to CBSE board, our school has been declared as the best CBSE school in the city. CATEGORIES OF AWARDS August-September 2017

  • 8. 8 UDGAM MATTERS The period of time starting from 2007 to 2015 was truly a golden period for startups all aroud the globe. We saw the founding of Flipkart in 2007. Uber was incorporated in 2009 and the consumer internet space was changed forever. Snapdeal pivoted from a coupons business to an online marketplace in 2011. Indian Startups such as Zomato, PayTM, Oyo and Shopclues brought in disruption in their various areas of business. However the real problem is the money. The coming of big names in venture capital all around the world saw a massive rise in funding and valuations. Tiger Global has placed a bet of more than $1 billion on Flipkart. Softbank pumped in more than $700 million in Snapdeal at a valuation of $6 billion, only to scurry around for buyers at approximately one-sixth of that. Softbank’s ex-President and COO,Nikesh Arora, displayed naĂŻve courage and placed bets on Ola, Housing.com and Oyo. However, he quit just because Masayoshi Son, founder of Softbank Corp. intended to stay at the helm for about a decade more. Let us focus on the evolution of e-commerce in India. Each one was riding high in their own ivory tower. They were celebrated as Gods. Massive valuations, swanky offices, huge pay packages, employees from the best schools in India and abroad. Everything seemed to be working out for them. The entry of Amazon into India in 2013, with a huge war chest of $5 billion, was the turning point for all e-commerce startups in the country. They started to become more serious into their business. Amazon re-shaped the e-commerce industry in India, by offering much higher discounts, a very reliable and likeable consumer support, and a very efficient return policy. Against approaching India via the inorganic way, i.e. to acquire an Indian company and build its operations, Amazon entered India via the organic way, i.e. to setup their own operations under the original company name. Amazon always believed in the philosophy “Make versus Buy” and they have fulfilled that. Flipkart’s and Snapdeal’s funds had dried up and they were looking for more funds. Amazon was steadily moving up in rankings in every respect. The brand name and trust associated with Amazon saw customers moving towards it.Also, lucrative offers like the Prime membership gained many customers. Jeff Bezosseemedruthlesstoconquer India. After playing catchup with Snapdeal for a year, Amazon grabbed the second spot, while Flipkart was still numero uno. Then in April of this year, Flipkart closed a massive funding round of $1.4 billion from Microsoft, Tencent, and eBay, and as part of the deal, Flipkart acquired the India arm of eBay. After this funding round, came the stunning news that Flipkart may be in the process of acquiring Snapdeal for $1 billion. This wave of consolidation brought about a much needed change in the startup ecosystem. In this article, I have primarily focused on e-commerce in India. And that too about Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon in a nutshell. August-September 2017

  • 12. 12 UDGAM MATTERS Hence to enable shutting of windows and doors to make the classrooms soundproof, the need for installing air-conditioning units in each and every classroom was created. And these AC units needed to be the silent types, preferably a split AC. Also need even cooling in the entire classroom. Only a cassette AC with 4 directional air flows suited both the purpose. Italsonecessitatedtheinstallation of false ceiling which enables better acoustics by absorbing sound and reducing reverberation orecho.Falseceilingsalsoreduced the heat transmission from the ceiling in to the classroom. Changing the ceiling gave rise to the need to change the lights and the existing tube lights were replaced with LED lights. Installation of air-conditioning meant a very important requirement in the form of more power. So we needed to have additional power substation. In additiontothiswealsohadtolook at revamping the entire wiring to enable the installation of the AC units and LED lights. We also had to make arrangements to drain the AC water properly without stagnation or spillage. Apart from classes being more ambient to learning, there are some additional benefits that are quite important to ignore. ‘Teacher’s laryngitis’ is a very commonphenomenonandaffects about one-third of teachers as they need to strain their voice to be heard by the entire class. Reduction in external noise mean now the teachers need not ‘shout’ at the top of their voices. The cool temperature prevents germs from spreading and hence helps to prevent communicable diseases like common cold, influenza and the like. Mosquitoes breed in moist and warm places and since AC removes moisture and reduces temperature, deadly diseases caused by these vectors, such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya, are also prevented. • 13. 13 UDGAM MATTERS Children and adults feel more tired in hot weather and cannot perform to their optimum capacity. The cool temperature of classrooms helps them do better in classes and be more alert and productive. It reduces fatigue in teachers and students to a great extent. Ambient temperatures help to calm down children with behavioural issues like ADHD and ADS. So they are able to concentratebetterintheirlessons. Research has proved that these children benefit tremendously from the use of air-conditioning in classrooms and reduced noise levels. The LED lights are very pleasant to the eyes and reduces glare, especially from the smartboards. These lights are environment friendly and makes our carbon footprint less. All these changes have increased the aesthetics of the classrooms and made them more pleasant. Since students spend a lot of time in these closed spaces, it spruces up their spirits to be in a beautiful set up. So air-conditioning of Udgam School was not done to provide luxurytothestudentsorteachers. It was propelled by the need to make academics even better by improving teacher and student efficiency. Technology has led the way for many tech savvy minds to developvarioussocialnetworking sites like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram orTwitter. These sites were introduced to encourage communication. Quoting Simon Mainwaring, “Social media is not about the exploitation of technology but service to community.” The positive aspects of social media are in abundance. The contemporary world has made communication across the globe a cake-walk. Social networking enables easy and instant connect with the outside world, thus GLobal is now GLocal. Life is muchsimplertoday.Studentscan easily catch up on their missed out work through social sites like Whatsapp. The news apps keep flashing the latest information which makes us well-informed. Social networking sites provide a wider platform to showcase talent. Today these networking sites are the biggest mechanism for new businesses. It provides a voice to the common man. However, the disadvantages outnumber the advantages. Defaming can easily be done via these networking sites. Fake messages can easily be circulated which can cause confusion especially if the validity is not checked. The addiction of social networking cannot be ignored. People have become lackadaisical. Shaming of a person can give birth to insecurities and psychological scars. People hack into others’ accounts to play pranks or steal confidential information. Mark Zuckerberg has said, “Facebook was not originally created to be a company. It was built to accomplish a social mission of making the world more open and connected.” Still, people do not comprehend the actual use of social media. • 15. UDGAM MATTERS15 Social Media- A present or a curse?By: DanayshaTulsiani IX-G Today social media plays a major role in our lives. Sites such as Facebook, Instagram have been the ideal way to know and connect to new people and learn new things. They make us feel connected to a larger community with an ease; but virtual connections also have their own disadvantages. Social media has created a blur comprehension of the word Relationship. We often log-on to connections made on social media rather than giving meaningful time to relationships around us. Another immoral attack of social media is Cyber Bullying. The easy availability of social media to kids of this generation makes them an obvious victim of cyber bullying. The devastation of these attacks leaves a person with many mental scars and self- doubts. In several cases victims have also committed suicide due to depression and complexity created by it. Cyber bullying has spread widely among the youth, with 42% reporting that they’ve been victims in 2010. While many companies use social media to connect with their clients, it has proved to be one of the most distracting things among their employees. British companies have claimed to lose 2.2 billion in a year due to this phenomenon. Employees are more concerned about what their friends post rather than using media for work. These sites encourage people to be more public about their personal lives. Moreover, every picture is available to the public; a picture of having shots with your friends may seem harmless but could be a huge disappointment in the context of an employee doing a background check. Limitations are also a part of these sites like hiding posts, blocking users and many more but are often forgotten and ignored by us. Social media is both a treasure and a trap, it depends upon us now to use it intelligently. August-September 2017

Now Kena is 6 and has stopped getting excited about anything. If everything is going exactly her way, she is happy. The rest of the time, she is upset at someone or something for ruining her day. Most things seem to be an effort for her. She spends endless hours watching TV if her mother lets her. Surya is 9. He has been enjoying his school and studies fairly well. After summer vacation, he seems to have become less and less excited about school. He thinks that others are harassing him. He doesn’t even want to go to school some days, but his parents make him. He wants to sleep with his mom. He has lost interest in playing with his friends. He has started telling his parents, “You don’t like me”. When they take him out to McDonalds, he likes it, but he is not as enthusiastic as he used to be. His mother often notices him sitting in a chair with a horrible look on his face, doing nothing. • 19. 19 UDGAM MATTERSAugust-September 2017 Above are the examples of children showing signs of being sad or upset with no good reason. Is it just being sad or something more? It is importanttounderstandthatbeing sad and being depressed are too different things. Children do have good and bad days. But for some children, the bad days last longer and are more serious. Children who are ‘down’ often and for long periods are at risk of developing depression. Depression among children was almost unheard of a few years ago. However, today, mental health experts are swarmed with cases of depression and anxiety among kids as young as six and seven. They believe that children are increasingly stressed due to pressure of studies, overexposure to social media, cyber-bullying, etc. Recognizing depression in children is important so that help can be given as soon as possible. Some of the early signs of depression that we should watch out for are- • Angry outbursts • Anxiety • Continuous feelings of hopelessness and sadness • Changes in appetite • Social withdrawal • Chronic physical pain • Decreased energy • Changes in sleep patterns • Poor performance in school • Clinginess – becoming more dependent on any parent • Sensitivity to criticism • Thoughts of self harm • Inability to concentrate • Regression • Inability to experience excitement or pleasure Not all children have all of these symptoms. In fact, many of them will show different symptoms at different times. Children with depression may see the world in a very negative way. This childhood depression doesn’t go away on its own. It needs immediate action to manage depression. What can you do? • Make an appointment to speak with the class teacher or school counsellor. Working together with school staff will help in finding the best ways to support your child at school. • Visit the Homoeopathy clinic to help the child get rid of depression faster. • If your child is having negative thoughts, you can model positive ways of thinking. For example, you can say things like, ‘I really enjoy it when we do this’, ‘That was fun!’ or ‘I knew you could do it’. • Manage your child’s stress and tension by making regular time for relaxing activities that your child enjoys. Regular family routines can also help to cut down stress. • Help your child learn relaxation strategies. Focus on exercises on deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, visualisations and mindfulness. • Maketimetotalkwithyourchild and listen to how he or she is feeling. You could do this when you’re making dinner together, reading a book together, going for a walk, driving somewhere or playing together at home. Children today are sensitive and are prone to such mental health problems. Hence it is the need of an hour that we become aware and alert our children and their surroundings for their healthier future. - Mrs.Vidhi Bose Counsellor - Primary School UDGAM MATTERS19 August-September 2017
