a new beginning.With this important message, I welcome all of you to the brand-new

To justify the thought that we harbour at the beginning of a new session, we couldn’t find a more befitting
image for the cover page than the one done by our own student – Anshi Tushar Rajani of Class VI.
Let this year be the year of new scope, broader horizons and ample avenues to harness your innate skills.
The myriad activities at school hone the creative thinking of the students and inculcate the right practices
that stay with them lifelong. Through this issue of Udgam Matters, lets’ develop new ideologies and habits
that are environmental friendly and focused on preserving our nature and make Earth a better place to live
in. Enjoy the articles, facts, creative work contributed by our students, teachers and parents.

Essential Data & Facts about Recycling
Practices in U.K.
Drinks cans such as cola and lemonade are usually made of aluminium, and it’s estimated that the UK
recycles over 85,000 tonnes of aluminium packaging each year.
DRINK CANS
If everyone in the UK was able to recycle just one more such can, it
would save enough energy to power an electric train from Leeds to
Brighton (and back) 6,000 times.
FACTS
Steel tins which are used for soups, beans, pulses, pet foods and tomatoes are widely
recycled.
FOOD TINS
If we recycled all the steel we use in a year, it would save enough energy
to make nearly 135,000 return electric train journeys between London and
Edinburgh.

Brown, green or clear – glass comes in all different shapes, colours, sizes and can be used for
packaging of wine, ketchup containers, beer bottles, and olive oil.
GLASS BOTTLES
If everyone in the UK recycled all the glass we use, it would save enough
energy to chill 56 bottles of wine each day for every UK household.FACTS

Are Airconditioned Classrooms
Bad for the Environment?
We have heard from several sources that consumption of more electricity is bad for the environment. Prima
facie it seems obvious when we are sourcing electricity from non-renewable fossil fuels which add to the
greenhouse gasses present in the environment. The question that could arise now is ‘ why the 5-star rated
Green Buildings are mostly Air Conditioned?’
Scratching the surface, we realise that in most environmentally friendly countries there is always a climate
controller installed – be it heating or cooling as per requirement. Before we jump to a conclusion, let us
dwell deeper in to the subject of a ‘conducive learning environment’ before we talk further about
“environment friendliness”.
Human body has certain limits. Like your phone may not work under extreme temperatures ( the range is
usually from 0°C to 40°C– beyond this range a phone might refuse to work).The best temperature range for
humans is 22°C to 27°C. We can survive even up to 45°C, however, our mental and physical abilities are
severely impaired.You can take a run at 6°C on a wintry morning or at 45°C on a hot summer afternoon and
see for yourself how your body behaves differently.
In Ahmedabad, for most part of the year, the room temperature is above 30°C and goes above 40°C in some
months, which is not the optimal for best performance. For better retention of lessons, we need our mental
abilities at peak, so we need to be in the 5°C range.
Learning happens through senses. Schools usually have an oral instructional method. Unlike a library, where
the method is reading or dance lessons, where we see and observe ‘how to dance’.The human range of hear-
ing is between 50 decibels to 70 decibels.
Earlier in our non-AC classrooms, we had to keep our windows open and sound used to travel in and out of
the classroom. This created an ambient sound (or background sound) of 60 db to 80 db. At this level, the
audio instructions are not clearly bifurcated by human ears and the brain works overtime to ﬁll the gaps in
hearing. The speaker (teacher in a classroom) has to shout out loud which results in undue stress and
fatigue.
In case we get a spacious building away from the noise pollution, away from the city, amidst a lush green
campus, where the room temperature is naturally controlled, then we will have to travel for about 20 kms
from the city. Daily commute for such a long distance will create environment pollution through vehicular
emission. Also, the time consumed in this will lead to making human body work beyond its productive hours.
In a nutshell, I have realised that if we want to have a conducive learning environment with least impact on
the carbon footprint , the best solution is to have a school with sound proof windows and AC classes in the
8 kms vicinity of the home.
So, in future if there is a doubt whether your AC school is environment friendly – you can reassure yourself
with this information and be conﬁdent that it is the best learning environment that the earth can afford.

Don’t Whitewash Your Mistakes
I noticed in my class that a few students carry whitener or the correcting fluid
as it is called. They use it to ‘cover up’ simple mistakes in spelling or capital
letter or date, in their notebooks. I keep instructing them not to use the whit-
ener but to just cancel the erroneous word and rewrite it. I assured them there
is nothing wrong if I or anybody else came to know about their spelling
mistake or any other mistake. They would not be punished for making a
mistake and then correcting it! It is normal for students to make mistakes. In
fact, I appreciate the student who made a mistake and realized it and then
corrected it!

But there are some who would not listen. They do not like a single spot or blemish on their otherwise neat
and flawless page. I persisted; explained that it doesn’t matter if they made a mistake, they need not hide it.
Even in examinations, they should not use the whitener as no examiner minds the cancellation of a word or
rewriting of it. It was all in vain. Again, after a few days, I would notice somebody using a whitener.
Then, one day, my patience gave way. Yet, I explained to them in a very patient manner why they should not
hide their mistakes by using the whitener. This habit may grow with them into their teenage and then into
their adulthood. And then they would try to hide their mistakes of lying, cheating, stealing and so on.
When you make a mistake, admit it, apologize and then don’t repeat it. Don’t try to hide your mistake. The
fact that you made a mistake will not be nullified by whitewashing it. Even if others don’t come to know,you
know that you had made a mistake! As children, mistakes are mostly committed out of innocence or igno-
rance. And they can be forgiven. Just think! After you grow up, say you are 18 or so and you commit a grave
mistake. Will you hide it from your parents? Will you confess it to them and apologise? Your character will
be judged from this. Parents love their children and will always forgive and forget. Hence, children should
learn never to hide their mistakes.
As teachers, we should also learn not to make a big issue of children’s mistakes! They make mistakes
because they are children and they come to school to learn the right things. It is our duty to correct their
mistakes.

Amusing Trip to an
with Amusing friends!
My PT 2 Exams were approaching,
and I was sad because I had to study
the whole day. Then, one day in the
class, it was announced that after
exams we would go for a picnic. Our
whole class was very excited! And so
was I. We were going to A.A.R.T.I
Adventure Camp, Gandhinagar, on
15th December 2018.
Soon after the exams, we started
planning for the picnic and discussed
among friends which snack to carry
with ourselves. It was so exciting for
all of us and we couldn’t stop plan-
ning about it. We were supposed to
go by bus and had to reach school by
7 a.m. I slept early so that I could
wake up early.
Our journey was fun.All of us were in
high spirits. I was delighted to see
the place. It had many adventurous
activities.
First we went for jungle trekking.The
girls of our class got scared
when the guide who was with us, told that there was a wild leopard
in the forest. But we boys were very excited to see the leopard.
Those who went for trekking carried a sickle, so that they could drive
away any animal. Even though we did not see any leopard, yet the
trekking experience was thrilling.It was indeed very difﬁcult.We saw
different animals that were not very big in size. In the jungle, we
spotted many cacti. Many got hurt by cactus but luckily, I was safe.
Our class teacher got hurt by six cacti thorns in her hand. I felt sad.
While climbing,many children slipped but I did not slip.I was strong!
We all tried our best.
After trekking in the jungle, we went for adventure rides. One of the
rides was a bridge named as ‘Burma Bridge’. It was so dangerous that
half of our class fell down and yet again, I did not. There was safety
belt around us because it was very deep. After ‘Burma Bridge’, we
went for ‘zip line’. It was very high. I turned out to be the lucky one
because there were ﬁve boys left for the zip line and all were going
in pairs, but I went alone. We also took a ride in a camel cart. It was
a good experience in the A.A.R.T.I adventure camp. I enjoyed my day
trip very much.

Pulkit Biswas, VII G
Dear Diary,
I recently heard of the Pulwama attack
in Jammu and Kashmir. I felt very
miserable thinking about the children
who lost their fathers who were trav-
elling in the CRPF bus. When I close
my eyes, I can imagine how they
would be feeling now. I am sure they
too must love their father in the same
way as I love my father.
It takes a very big heart and a lot of
strength to protect these borders.
They laid their lives for our country.
Nowadays I feel that there are emo-
tions and feeling of sadness in the
atmosphere around me. I saw the
candle-march on the streets and roads
near my house. I was moved to tears.
I am sitting in my room, recollecting
all the images which I saw on the tele-
vision about Pulwama attack, I hope
such incidents do not repeat in future.

I also have very good proverb regarding this
“ An army of sheep led by a lion will always
defeated an army of lions led by sheep.” That
means people with good attitude can
become leaders and transform the cowards
soldiers into violent fighters and depressed
people into energetic people.

The Wonders of
Attitude
Once upon a time, lived a young boy, who went to hell because of his father’s misdeeds. He is pushed into
hell by his dad’s commands waiting at the door steps of hell and waiting for the king of death. And do you
know? what he thinks to himself, he says that “Ok I am going to hell so, Should I be third grade person there
or a second grade person there or should I be the best in the hell?”. Then he decides, that even if he is in
hell, he should be the best in hell. So that means even if you fail you should be the best amongst the
failures.And if you succeed,you should be the best in succession. By this you can see this boy attitude,when
the king of death comes near the boy and asks him,“What do you want? “The boy answers,“I only want one
thing from you.” The king of hell says, “what? “And the boy answer, “give me the knowledge of defeating
death”.The king of death was also a sports mind person.He taught the boy how to defeat death i.e.defeating
himself.This boy was the one and only‘Nachiketa’. BY this I am trying to show you that even in the toughest
time of your life,if you have a good attitude then you can surely come out of the situations and learn a great
lesson from it.
I also have another great example to match with title, It is of lion and of any other animal for example an
elephant. We all know that the lion is not the tallest animal in the forest, it is not even the smartest animal
in the forest, it is not even the fastest animal in the jungle and nor it is the strongest and heaviest animal
in the jungle. But whenever he sees an animal for example an elephant the first thought that comes to his
mind is “LUNCH! I can eat him.”And even though the elephants is more stronger, more powerful, more intel-
ligent than the lion the first thought that comes in its mind seeing a lion is “Eater, he can eat me”.This is the
attitude difference between a lion and an elephant. And just because of this attitude the lion is able to eat
an elephant because he also does what he thinks.

The Little
FOREST
The little forest, as I called it, was just beside my home. When I
had nothing to do, I used to sit on my veranda gazing upon the
diversified flora and fauna of the forest. It was a thorny forest
with trees such as Babul, Neem and Tamarind. A huge tamarind
tree acted as the centre of the whole eco-system. Though it was
a very small and thorny forest, it had various species of animals
you would not see commonly in an urban area.
Early morning,you could see some rabbits hopping around,or mongooses busy catching their prey.If you are
lucky, you could even see a herd of blue bulls crossing the road! The blue bulls would cross the forest once
in a month or so. The most fascinating aspect of this forest was the peacocks communicating with each
other in shrill cries. The chitter-chatter of the birds woke me up in the morning. As the day progressed, the
birds and animals would return to the shade of the trees, to protect themselves from the scorching sun.
At noon, one could see cattle herders guiding their herd of buffaloes to the forest. The buffaloes used to
chew grass lazily and snooze in the muddy puddles.The herders had a nice talk sitting in the shade of trees.
They would sit for hours. Sometimes they would eat wild berries, plucked from the trees in the forest. The
squirrels would jump around the herders for the leftover berries and fruits. The herders gradually left and
huge flocks of birds raided the forest in the afternoon. There were Mynas, Drongos, Sparrows, Lapwings or
even the greater Coucals. As night descended, the place became rather spooky – an eerie silence fell upon
the place. Later in the night, crickets would start their chorus. The thing that spooked me the most was the
occasional howling of the dogs. I thought they were to be jackals.
What was once a living green forest has now transformed into a concrete jungle. The whole ecosystem has
been wiped out and replaced by dust and pieces of concrete. I so wish I could stop this!

SCHOOL-THE HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Today let’s talk about Teacher-Student relationship. Since a child
enters his school, he is acquainted with his teacher. If there’s any
problem in school, he knows who to approach – the teacher.
Gradually,the school becomes a second home for kids and teach-
ers become their mothers.Teachers,then in their own warm ways
make children feel that they are in their second home with
teachers who are like their mother and are striving hard to bring
more charm in their life.
TEACHERS AND THE MANY ROLE THEY PLAY
We, as teachers play many other roles - a
friend, a guide, a counsellor to the child and
so on. At times, kids ignore their mother’s
suggestions, but they believe in their teacher.
From that tender age knowingly or unknow-
ingly, children walk on the right path which is
shown to them.
But as time passes and they grow from
toddlers to adolescents, they start question-
ing the same guided path that was taught to
them right from the beginning. This often gives rise to a disbalance in their code of conduct.What could be
the possible reason for this trend? Is it because kids think that they have grown up hence, do not require
any guidance from their teachers?
Recall and rewind the time when you had a special bond with your teachers during those primary school
days. You shared all your menial issues, your new experiences, approached them for solutions, sought their
help for right guidance. Aren’t you still the same?
TEACHER – PARENT BOND- MUCH NEEDED
Not only children but the bond which was once strong between parents and teachers does not remain the
same. Some parents are not consistent enough to stay in touch with the teachers at school or are regular
for meets and seminars at school. Reasons can be many, and they may be genuine at times for sure, but
when the importance of teachers or maintaining relationship with them is taken for granted, it’s indeed a
matter of concern. Due to the nonchalance from students or parents, the teachers ultimately suffer.After all,
we are here for our children’s well-being and growth. Isn’t that our purpose?

To smoothen the students’ school journey, teachers and parents must join hands and work together, so
that it has a positive impact on the children. Ultimately, children pick cues from the action of the adults
and who could be better role models for them than their parents and teachers.
NEED OF THE HOUR
So, as a teacher as well as a parent, I suggest every parent to consider the broader perspective and try to
be more consistent in maintaining a cordial relationship with the teachers.
As we all know teacher‘s in school embrace all students as their own kids,putting their full belief in them,
striving hard to improve their grades, taking remedial classes, giving important notes and so on, as they
hope that one day their endeavours will be fruitful.
According to me a Guru –Shishya relation has always been considered to be such that,even the strangest
blink of eyes on student is noticed by the teacher, and on the other hand, a student can easily understand
her teachers’stress from her frown lines.When a student and a parent will start solely believing in school
teachers and not merely rely on outside sources, we will together notice a remarkable positivity and a
drastic change in the growth of student, which is our ultimate aim. Let’s together bring a change in our
‘relation’ that will become our strength for the beneﬁt of our children.

We Want A Pet!
Dave and Ava were at Jake’s house, playing with Garbell, his dog. They were so amazed by Garbell’s smart-
ness that now they really wanted a pet of their own. In an hour their mother, Angel, came to pick them up.
Dave and Ava were sad to leave Garbell. However, they got on to the car and told their mother about their
desire of having their own pet dog.
“What a lovely Idea!” she said,“but I think so your father won’t approve it.”
“What’s the harm, mom?” asked Dave.
“No harm but Issac is afraid of dogs. Once a dog had bitten him since then he is afraid of dogs” Angel
informed her kids
They soon reached home and after having their lunch they shared their thoughts with their grandparents.

“What a wonderful idea,” said Grandma. “But dear, Issac won’t approve that easily, and you need to have
patience for handling pets,” said Grandpa.“But Grandpa, Pa is on foreign tour for a month, so can Ava and I
can practice with Garbell at our home for few days?” asked Dave.
Grandma thought for a moment and asked “Will Jake allow you to keep Garbell?”
“Yes, he will as he and his family have to go to Wales for some urgent work,” said Ava.
“OK Garbell can stay here but he has to leave before Issac comes back” warned Grandpa.“OK grandpa,” said
Dave and Ava in unison
It was school the next day. When they returned home, they were not shocked to see Garbell in their house
with Grandpa as Jake had to leave the same day. So, he had come to drop Garbell.
Dave and Ava were thrilled to start petting Garbell. Days passed and it was time to say goodbye to Garbell.
After a warm goodbye,it was time for everyone to go back to their normal routine.Dave and Ava were feeling
lonely and were in a desperate need of a companion. However, since their birthday was approaching, they
got busy with all the planning and that them forget their need of a pet.
Issac came just a day before the twins’ birthday and eve n bought a present for them. Dave and Ava’s family
had organised a birthday bash for the duo.After the party, it was the time to open the gifts.Among the heap
of presents, they chose to open their father’s present ﬁrst. But it was not kept among the other gifts.
Issac escorted them to their room where they found a small box with a lot of holes on the top and when they
opened it, they were surprised to ﬁnd a small blonde furry dog with sparkling turquoise coloured eyes. It was
wearing a cute collar and a small gold colour metal plate was hanging down with an inscription that read
‘ISABELL’ .
“But pa aren’t you afraid of dogs?” questioned Ava.
“No” replied Issac “It was just a small surprise we all planned for you.”
“How did you know that we wanted a dog?” questioned Dave.
Grandma replied “it was your mom’s idea. When you told her in the car that you want a pet, she wanted to
give you a surprise. She told about it to us when you were having your lunch.”
She called me and asked me to bring a cute pup with a collar and I did as told.” continued Issac.
“Thank You,” said the twins in unison as they ran to hug their family.

One silver- in SOF Olympiads !
Let’s read what motivates him to practice and
score more? How does he manage his time?
I practice because I enjoy it. Trying to ﬁnd the
right answer feels like playing a game. I pick up
the practice exercises anytime when I am done
with my free play .
Also, our teachers teach us so well that I already
feel quite comfortable with grammar or most
mathematics problems.
They have always given me solutions to my
queries, even if out of syllabus.
The teachers go out of their way even for very
tricky problems. Once, I got a chit in the class
from Jigisha ma'am, my Math teacher, who had
just solved a tricky out-of-syllabus query that I
had asked her in the class.

The value of green and clean nature is inestimable. Despite everyone being aware that plastic and plastic
bags are one of the biggest contributors to global warming, still we use quite often & carelessly and throw
away with organic waste which is causing serious health hazard to every living being.
Small initiative from all of us can work wonders which involves following steps
Bringing day to day products, vegetables or any grocery item in our own reusable bags or eco –friendly
material which should be made up of calico, jute, paper, cotton or cloth etc.
Do not snip off and throw away the corner of plastic sachets such as sachets of milk, shampoo medicine,
ketchup etc.These small pieces of plastic are the most dangerous as they escape even sophisticated ﬁlters
and enter the food chain, earth and water bodies, also if they enter into human bodies then can cause
health problems such as cancer, birth defects ,impaired immunity etc. So try to open the sachets without
separating the triangular minuscule corner.
Avoid drinking hot liquid in styrofoam cups or plastic cups
Say no to plastic straws and balloons
Go digital! Avoid CDs, DVDs and plastic cases when you can buy music and video online
Choose# (PETE) or #2(HDPE) plastics which are most commonly recycled plastics
Strictly adhere to the guidelines, which has been provided by government with respect to plastic and
dumping of waste
It is never too late. Start today
For the sake of saving few seconds we are tampering our beautiful nature. So, I request all the near and dear
ones, ladies and gentle men, smart kids and their parents ,let us join hands together and take resolution to
stop the use of plastic bags to make earth a better place to live in.

The Snake around Shiva’s Neck
Once upon a time,there was a big snake. It was very proud of itself and thought that ‘I am the most powerful
of all’.
One day, a man was crossing the road and he met the snake.The snake said ‘’ I will eat you as that will make
more powerful’’
The man believed in Lord Shiva. He said that “if you want to be powerful, then you pray to Lord Shiva”.
The arrogant snake retorted “ You mere human, don’t give me any opinion”.
Then the snake slithered closer to the man .“ It’s my time to swallow you”
The petriﬁed man knelt down and started praying to Lord Shiva.
To his astonishment, Lord Shiva appeared and looked only at the snake.
“ You are harassing simple people living on the earth. I need to punish you. From today, you will stay
around my neck and do as I say.“
The man was relieved and so were the others who were continuously harassed by the snake.
Everyone lived peacefully on Earth from that day onwards.
Moral : We should not think that we are the most powerful. Only God is the most
powerful among us all.

‘Second Innings’: LIFE Begins @ Retirement
I would like to share a real inspiring incidence which I have observed while coordinating the camp at Eklavya
academy. There is a group of around 50 elderly people, all are above age of 60. This TT Gang is exist since last
7 years, having great passion for learning Sports. They overcome of their health medical issues and found out
the way to keep the passion alive after retirement. We can call them ‘Old by age but young by Heart’.
Retirement : Goodbye Tension, Hello Passion !!

PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS -A 5 BOOK
SERIES BY RICK RIORDAN
If you are in the mood for some Greek mythology combined with a healthy dose of
violence, humor, thrill and adventure, just read the ‘Percy Jackson and The Olympi-
ans-a 5 book series’, which trace the journey of the hero-the demigod Percy Jackson
for the destruction of the evil Titan Lord, Kronos. There is also a volume called ‘The
Greek Gods’ which gives detailed information about lives and times of the Greek
Gods which appear in the series.
It is a wonderful book where mythology is mixed with fiction. It is a tale of victory of
good over evil. Percy Jackson finds out that he is a demigod-the son of a human
mother with Poseidon-the Sea God as his father. Percy fights with the Titan Lord
Kronos and saves the Gods.
There are 5 books in the series.
1) The first book is ‘The Lightning Thief’. In this book, the King of Universe, the Sky
God, Zeus thinks that Percy has stolen his main lightning bolt. In the end, the
real thief is caught, but I won’t tell you who it is-so that I do not ruin the
suspense.
2) In the second book ‘The Sea of Monsters’, Percy and his friend Annabeth and his brother Tyson go in
search of their Satyr friend Grover and go through a lot of hair-raising adventures.
3) In the third volume ‘The Titan’s Curse’ Thalia (the daughter of Zeus) accompanies Percy, Grover and the
hunters of Artemis to find Annabeth and Artemis, who were forced by Atlas to hold up the sky.
4) The fourth book is ‘The Battle of the Labyrinthus’ where Percy, Annabeth, Grover and Tyson go into an
underground maze called ‘The Labyrinths’.Percy finds his mortal friend Rachel along the way.At last,they
reach their goal.
5) In the fifth and last book‘The Last Olympian’, there is a war in which all the campers of ‘Camp Half Blood’
fight against the Titans to save the Gods.The climax is thrilling and interesting, and nicely merges differ-
ent facets of the story.
The series is not for the faint hearted as they are full of bloodbath, gore and injustice too. However, if you
look beyond the violence, the series has a touch of subtle humor in the dialogues and the situations. eg.
‘With great power..comes the need to take a nap’ or when Percy says,’She called me brave, unless she was
talking to the catfish’. Also, the book series teaches us many lessons such as :
1) A friend in need is a friend indeed.
The characters help each other selflessly in the end.

2) You are never alone-you always have someone to care for you and help you. Percy Jackson being a demi-
god was ignored by everyone in the mortal school, except for Grover. Yet, he never lost heart. He said,’If
my life is going to mean anything, I have to live it myself’
3) Always have a plan B ready, as Plan A may not always succeed!
4) Although one of Percy’s friends betrayed him, he forgave him and tried to make friends with him.
5) The character of Percy Jackson exemplifies bravery, friendship, determination, selflessness and a will to
win despite all odds.
I would definitely recommend the book series which almost managed to fill the void created in my life after
reading ‘The Harry Potter’ series. I am looking forward to reading the sequel series-Percy Jackson and the
Heroes of Olympus.
