Exploratory
• A preliminary investigation of a relatively unknown field
which aims to gain new insights.
• This type of research method conducted for a problem that
has not been clearly defined.
• It is used to clarify/define a problem
• This is where a researcher has an idea or has observed
something and seeks to understand more about it.
• Exploratory studies are a valuable means of understanding
– What is happening
– To assess phenomenon in a new light
Explanatory/Causal Research
• This study is designed to exploring something
new
• The desire to know “WHY”, to explain, is the
purpose of explanatory research.
Descriptive
• An in-depth study of an individual, group,
organization or phenomenon which aims to
describe the object of study accurately.
• This study is defined as a research method that
describes the characteristics of the population or
phenomenon that is being studied
• This methodology focuses more on the “What”
of the research subject rather than the “Why” of
the research subject.
