ROLE OF U.G.C IN
CURRICULUM
DEVELOPMENT

University Grants
Commission(U.G.C)
The U.G.C was first formed in 1945.
Proposed during the first year of independence
i.e in 1947.
In August 1949, recommendation was made to
reconstitute the U.G.C. by University Education
Commission of 1948-49.
In 1952, the government decided that all the
grants given to the universities should be
handled by U.G.C.
University Grants
Commission(U.G.C)
U.G.C was inaugurated by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on
December 28th 1953.
Became a statutory body in November 1956.
Six regional centres at Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata,
Guwahati and Bhopal.
Head office is at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi.
Role of U.G.C in Curriculum
Development
Steps taken by the U.G.C to update the education
system are:
Education as an academic discipline.
Education as professional preparation for service.
The committee retained 2 levels of education.
Namely,
The Under-Graduate(U.G)
The Post-Graduate(P.G)
Role of U.G.C in Curriculum
Development
Suggestion to integrate courses
with U.G and P.G courses in
other disciplines.
Optional subjects should be
offered to students at both U.G
and P.G levels.
Role of U.G.C in Curriculum
Development
Professional studies in education:
Introduction of B.Ed.(Bachelor of Education)
programme for preparation of effective secondary
school teachers.
Aim of B.Ed. Programme is to train a teacher who can
play multiple roles related to school education.
The B.Ed. Programme must focus on the functions of
the teacher in school.
The post-graduate programme M.Ed.(Master of
Education) must prepare specialists in all aspects of
school education.
Role of U.G.C in Curriculum
Development
Choice Based Credit System(CBCS):
Minimum course curriculum for the under-graduate
courses under CBCS was introduced by the U.G.C.
There was the need to allow flexibility in education
system. So the U.G.C. introduced CBCS.
The CBCS helps students to learn core subjects and
explore learning beyond the core subjects.
The CBCS facilitate the students benchmark the
respective courses with best academic practices.
Role of U.G.C in Curriculum
Development
Advantages of Choice Based Credit
System(CBCS):
From teacher-centric to student-centric education.
Students may undertake as many credits as they can
cope up with.
Students can take credits by combining unique
combinations. For example: Physics with Economics,
Microbiology with Chemistry etc…
CBCS offers flexibility to students to study at different
times and at different institutions.
Role of U.G.C in Curriculum
Development
Uniform Curriculum:
All the universities should have 70% uniformity in
curriculum for Under-Graduate courses.
The CBCS should be adapted by all the universities.
The Under-Graduate course should have 70% content
from the U.G.C. curriculum while the remaining 30%
curriculum can be formed by the university.
The U.G.C has suggested that the curriculum of every
academic department should be reviewed once in 3
years.

  • 1. ROLE OF U.G.C IN CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT By, Venkatesh Prasad B R B.Ed 1st semester Amrita School of Education, Mysuru
  • 2. University Grants Commission(U.G.C) The U.G.C was first formed in 1945. Proposed during the first year of independence i.e in 1947. In August 1949, recommendation was made to reconstitute the U.G.C. by University Education Commission of 1948-49. In 1952, the government decided that all the grants given to the universities should be handled by U.G.C.
  • 3. University Grants Commission(U.G.C) U.G.C was inaugurated by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on December 28th 1953. Became a statutory body in November 1956. Six regional centres at Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Guwahati and Bhopal. Head office is at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi.
  • 4. Role of U.G.C in Curriculum Development Steps taken by the U.G.C to update the education system are: Education as an academic discipline. Education as professional preparation for service. The committee retained 2 levels of education. Namely, The Under-Graduate(U.G) The Post-Graduate(P.G)
  • 5. Role of U.G.C in Curriculum Development Suggestion to integrate courses with U.G and P.G courses in other disciplines. Optional subjects should be offered to students at both U.G and P.G levels.
  • 6. Role of U.G.C in Curriculum Development Professional studies in education: Introduction of B.Ed.(Bachelor of Education) programme for preparation of effective secondary school teachers. Aim of B.Ed. Programme is to train a teacher who can play multiple roles related to school education. The B.Ed. Programme must focus on the functions of the teacher in school. The post-graduate programme M.Ed.(Master of Education) must prepare specialists in all aspects of school education.
  • 7. Role of U.G.C in Curriculum Development Choice Based Credit System(CBCS): Minimum course curriculum for the under-graduate courses under CBCS was introduced by the U.G.C. There was the need to allow flexibility in education system. So the U.G.C. introduced CBCS. The CBCS helps students to learn core subjects and explore learning beyond the core subjects. The CBCS facilitate the students benchmark the respective courses with best academic practices.
  • 8. Role of U.G.C in Curriculum Development Advantages of Choice Based Credit System(CBCS): From teacher-centric to student-centric education. Students may undertake as many credits as they can cope up with. Students can take credits by combining unique combinations. For example: Physics with Economics, Microbiology with Chemistry etc… CBCS offers flexibility to students to study at different times and at different institutions.
  • 9. Role of U.G.C in Curriculum Development Uniform Curriculum: All the universities should have 70% uniformity in curriculum for Under-Graduate courses. The CBCS should be adapted by all the universities. The Under-Graduate course should have 70% content from the U.G.C. curriculum while the remaining 30% curriculum can be formed by the university. The U.G.C has suggested that the curriculum of every academic department should be reviewed once in 3 years.
