mass hysteria is also a type of diffused
(meaning it can spread wide ) collective mass
behavior
Mass hysteria takes place when a potentially
destructive or threatening event causes a
widespread, highly emotional fear. Sometimes
these fears are accompanied by panic, mass
movement or attempts to escape from the
perceived dangerHysteria is now viewed as a psychiatric
disorder consisting of signs and symptoms of
illnesses with no organic basis.
rumor is typically a piece of information
or story that has not been verified,
meaning that the person telling it doesn't
know if it's true or false.
According to Horton and Hunt (1964), ‘A
rumor is rapidly spread report
unsubstantiated by authenticated fact.’
It is very tempting to accept a
story or some juicy tale about
people’s private affairs
People are likely to believe a
rumor if the bearer is credible
gossip can be defined as a private
conversation between two people about
someone else who is not around.
The information they are discussing is
represented as factual even though the
truth may not have been confirmed. Gossip and rumors are both results of
societal interaction that most people
would like to avoid or fall victims to.
However, there are some significant
differences between the two terms.
Gossip refers to talking about
someone or something with
another person or a group of
persons.
Rumor refers to spreading
specific information about
someone or something that has
not been verified.
1. Gossip is idle chit chat with a person
or a group of persons about something or
someone with no specific purpose or end-
goal in mind.
2. Gossip is considered to be less harmful
than rumors though at times gossip can
be hurtful too
3. A little bit of gossip is encouraged
while rumors are generally discouraged.
Fads are a form of collective behavior when large
numbers of people enthusiastically embrace some
activity or object for a short period of time
music preferences, dance styles, and types of slang
speech.
They are perceived as cool or interesting by large group of
people , they gain popularity.
Fads are often confused with trends; however, they
are not the same thing. The major difference
between a fad and a trend is duration
Fads are usually trivial, short-lived variations in
speech, decoration or patterns of behaviour or
activities involving large number of people, whereas
fashions, although similar to fads, change less
rapidly, are less trivial, and tend to be more cyclical.
Fashion is a term commonly
used to describe a style of
clothing
1-3 years
Fashions can sometimes falsely
give the impression of wealth
and status.
They refer to periodic changes in styles and
patterns of our behaviour.
both arrive suddenly and also disappear
quickly, but they may attract great interest
from large numbers of people during their
period of stay.
Fads and fashions allow people to identify with
something different from the dominant
institutions and symbols of culture. They
provide many people with a sense of
excitement, feeling of belongingness, or a
source of identification and self-esteem.
3 Whose adorning let it not be
that outward [adorning] of
plaiting the hair, and of wearing
of gold, or of putting on of
apparel; 4 But [let it be] the
hidden man of the heart, in
that which is not corruptible,
[even the ornament] of a meek
and quiet spirit, which is in the
sight of God of great price.
Bible Verse
1 Peter 3:3 - 3:4
Reflection
I think Mass Behavior create social pressure, which arises from
one's belief about what other people expect or want them to do.
most people think of themselves as individuals able to make
their own choices in respect to behavior, there is often a strong
tendency to conform to group patterns and expectations. I think
Mass Behavior deals with the influences of people to act in a way
when others are presence, and looks at the behavior and action
that lead to those behaviors. ... My family is also an influence on
my behavior. ... Conformity is a social influence that makes a
person's beliefs and behavior change to fit in with a specific
group. ..

Editor's Notes

  1. There are many different types of mass behavior. In this lesson, we will define and describe mass hysteria, rumors, gossip, fads, and fashions as examples of mass behavior.
  2. Mass behavior is a type of social behavior and is defined as collective behavior among people who are spatially dispersed from one another. Collective behavior of an aggregate of individuals giving the appearance of unity of attitude, feeling, and motivation. Mass behavior is spatially distributed to the people in particular places. Now lets move on to the first type of social mass behavior
  3. Like panic, mass hysteria is also a type of diffused (meaning it can spead wide ) collective mass behaviour. It is some form of irrational, compulsive behaviour spreads among people. Mass hysteria takes place when a potentially destructive or threatening event causes a widespread, highly emotional fear. Sometimes these fears are accompanied by panic, mass movement or attempts to escape from the perceived danger Mass hysteria is a common term used to describe a situation in which various people all suffer from similar hysterical symptoms. Hysteria is now viewed as a psychiatric disorder consisting of signs and symptoms of illnesses with no organic basis. Mass hysteria is also known as collective hysteria, epidemic hysteria, or mass psychogenic illness. For example i think its safe to say that its like a fire in a neighborhood, spreads quickly
  4. 2 people show signs of illness that they blame on something and then suddenly others begin to show the same symptoms or worse, thats when mass hysteria occurs. Let me show u some example video.
  5. Rumors are unsubstantiated information about a subject that is spread informally. A rumor is typically a piece of information or story that has not been verified, meaning that the person telling it doesn't know if it's true or false. Rumors are piece of information gathered informally which is used to interpret an ambiguous situation. It arises in such a situation where people want some verifiable information but do not get or cannot get it. Rumours are frequently, but not always, false. According to Horton and Hunt (1964), ‘A rumour is rapidly spread report unsubstantiated by authenticated fact.’ Much of our casual conversation or gossip consists of rumour mongering.
  6. It is very tempting to accept a story or some juicy tale about people’s private affairs when it is unable to confirm or deny it—especially if it is vague and entertaining. Usually, the contents of rumour get distorted in the course of its transmission from one person to the next. In both panics and crazes, a rumour may be significant factor. It is also enough to cause a riot. People are likely to believe a rumour if the bearer is credible.
  7. gossip can be defined as a private conversation between two people about someone else who is not around. The information they are discussing is represented as factual even though the truth may not have been confirmed. Gossip also tends to be spoken by people about someone they know, not celebrities or historical figures. Another common aspect is that the speaker assumes a morally superior attitude in body language and tone. A final common trait is that people compare themselves to the target of the gossip and find themselves better off. Gossip and rumors are both results of societal interaction that most people would like to avoid or fall victims to. However, there are some significant differences between the two terms.
  8. Gossip refers to talking about someone or something with another person or a group of persons. Rumor refers to spreading specific information about someone or something that has not been verified. In other words, it may be a truth or a falsehood. 1.Gossip is idle chit chat with a person or a group of persons about something or someone with no specific purpose or end-goal in mind. Rumor is a deliberate attempt to spread unverified facts or information about a person or thing with the intention of slander. 2.Gossip is considered to be less harmful than rumors though at times gossip can be hurtful too 3.A little bit of gossip is encouraged while rumors are generally discouraged.
  9. Fads are a form of collective behavior when large numbers of people enthusiastically embrace some activity or object for a short period of time. Examples of fads include music preferences, dance styles, and types of slang speech. Fad objects are such things as the hula hoop, styles of dress, or the Rubik's Cube. Fads typically last for a very short period of time, but they reach and influence large numberd of people in that time. They are perceived as cool or interesting by large group of people , they gain popularity.
  10. Fads are often confused with trends; however, they are not the same thing. The major difference between a fad and a trend is duration. A fad product may be something like the beepers of the late 1980s, which enjoyed a few years of popularity, but as technology advanced, the use of the beeper disappeared just as quickly as it appeared. Fads are usually trivial, short-lived variations in speech, decoration or patterns of behaviour or activities involving large number of people, whereas fashions, although similar to fads, change less rapidly, are less trivial, and tend to be more cyclical. Some examples of fads are crowding into telephone booths, chewing the chewing gum, dancing the twist, wearing T-shirts, playing TV games, and a very famous sample of fads is "ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE" well, jp has experienced it haha i sawit on ur ig duibuqi
  11. Fashion is a term commonly used to describe a style of clothing. A fashion usually remains popular for about 1-3 years and then is replaced by yet another fashion. In any era, fashion is a reflection of the times and what is going on socially and economically. Fashions can sometimes falsely give the impression of wealth and status.
  12. Fads and fashions are specific types of collective mass behaviour that people enthusiastically pursue. They refer to periodic changes in styles and patterns of our behaviour. Generally, both arrive suddenly and also disappear quickly, but they may attract great interest from large numbers of people during their period of stay. fashions are pleasurable mass involvement that feature a certain amount of acceptance by society and have a line of historical continuity To be ‘in fashion’ is to wear the types of clothes and having the style of hair that are currently in vogue and the advertisers are pushing. In reality, fads and fashions enter every aspect of life where choices are not dictated by sheer necessity—sports, children toys, vehicles, TV sets, beverages, architecture, cameras, wedding invitation cards and decoration, etc. Fads and fashions allow people to identify with something different from the dominant institutions and symbols of culture. They provide many people with a sense of excitement, feeling of belongingness, or a source of identification and self-esteem.
  13. I tried to find some bible verse about fashion and behaviors on the net. And these verse stands out and I think has the connection to my topic. I think this passage is telling us that we should put more design in our soul than the decoration outside We should priorities our soul first than our apparel in our body.
