Hello and welcome to understanding Twitter. This is a half day course designed to help you to get started on Twitter.
Hello, my name is May King Tsang.
My first name is May King and I am the founder of MayKing Tea. I used Twitter primarily for my business
I am founder of the Queensland Business Group: a Facebook Group that helps 5800+ members to Help, Share and Collaborate.
We don’t sell to each other but help and support each other through relationship building, education and referrals.
Monika and I expanded our horizons and created a Global Facebook Group called Business Startup which has taken the
I am also co-founder of The Likeability Company where we help people like you.
Podpora is my latest venture and is the #1 support network for Business Owners and Entrepreneurs.
I didn’t know a single person before moving to Brisbane and used Twitter as a tool to connect with other business owners, build relationships, raise awareness about my business and make money with each of my businesses. In this course I am going to teach you how to apply my teachings to your own business.
Monika on the right is the brainchild of Podpora and invited May King to be part of this movement.
Podpora is a brain trust of businesses that come together regularly to support each other with common obstacles to grow, develop and achieve possibilities not yet recognised. Podpora is a movement inspired by Monika’s personal experience of running a business and was frustrated with the lack of support she received while growing it. 4 years after building her own successful business she decided to create a movement where budding entrepreneurs and business owners never feel alone. That was how Podpora (a Slavic word for support) was born.
Why TwitterThere are many assumptions made about twitter and today we will debunk those assumptions with some interesting results.
How businesses use Twittercommon strategies that businesses currently use on Twitter that are not effective, are lazy and will see to damage the reputation of a business. This section reveals what that ineffective strategies are.
Understanding twitter-speakunlike other social media applications, there is a way to speak on twitter and this section has a guide to help you understand your RT’s, MT’s HT’s from your DM’s and Hashtags.
How to Use TwitterTwitter can be used for many aspects of your business and this section will seek to help businesses understand how to use Twitter for:
Building your community
Building relationships

Twitter Next Steps
Now that you are convinced about Twitter, you have set up an account, what next?
Additional Resources
Finally you will learn what additional resources you can use to help you continue on your Twitter journey.
Twitter is one big party – if Facebook is a party amongst mates, Twitter is like a party amongst colleagues.
You’re connecting with one person but other people could be listening.
In FB you’re broadcasting to your FB friends, but in Twitter, anybody could be listening.
You never know who’s watching.
You build closer connections because when you’re chatting because it’s a one2one connection
You just chat, you get into the conversation, and the most important thing is, you never know who’s watching.
What goes on in Vegas, stays in Vegas and the same goes for Facebook.
All the comments that are made within Facebook will stay in Facebook.
The common response I often receive is ‘yeah but all of my customers are found in FB’ – but what how about future clients?
Where do you think potential clients are going to search? Google of course!
As Monika has often said: ‘If you love Google, Google will love you back’
Facebook keep changing the goal posts, but they are answerable to their shareholders as a Publicly Listed company.
It would therefore make good business sense that Facebook places greater importance on the Facebook Pages that pays for Facebook Ads or Boost Posts.
Organic Reach has reduced significantly with anything between 2-16% has been quoted in the last couple of years.
In the first screenshot, you can see how a couple of tweets featured on page 1 of Google when I entered the keywords ‘mayking tea’
The second screenshot shows that all the comments that have been made in the Queensland Business Facebook Group do not even register in Google.
So if you want to make your Social Media count, and increase their chances of being found on Google, then start thinking about outside of Facebook.
In April 2013, it was reported in this article that Facebook fatigue` has reached Australia: almost 400,000 users have drifted away from the social network since December, and is slowly spreading worldwide.
The article doesn’t explain where the users have moved to, but it is certainly food for thought.
February 2015, Bloomberg broke the news about a deal struck between Twitter and Google, allowing Tweets to appear as soon as they’re posted. What used to happen was that the tweets could take up to 24 hours to appear in Google Search.http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-02-05/twitter-said-to-reach-deal-for-tweets-in-google-search-results
5 things brands should know about the Google-Twitter partnership: http://digiday.com/platforms/5-things-brands-know-google-twitter-partnership/
This article explains the impact of this announcement with an emphasis on the importance of real-time marketing.
If you want to get found on Google, don’t put all of your Social Media Eggs into the Facebook Basket.
Twitter, on 29th April, despite reporting a fall in revenue announced a new partnership with Google that enables Advertisers to buy sponsored tweets through Google’s DoubleClick ad exchange. http://www.businessinsider.com.au/twitter-google-partnership-2015-4
With the partnership between Google and Twitter, it makes it increasingly difficult for business owners to ignore Twitter.
This is a summary based on what we’ve just talked about, but gives suggestions on what we can do about:
FB keep changing the goalposts
FB Fatigue
What goes on in Vegas…
Read the blog post and consider the tips that have been given in the blog post (review strategy; drive readers to your website; consider another social media application such as Twitter).
There are two common ways that business owners use Twitter by those that don’t understand Twitter:
Promote / sell / shout to anyone who’ll listen
Push everything from Facebook to Twitter.
Pushing everything from Facebook to Twitter is not real engagement. It is shouting. Shouting does not help develop relationships.
It is okay to push something posts from Facebook to Twitter but not all posts.
Each Social Media application requires a different strategy.
Twitter is focused, it’s about engaging and having a chat like at a party. There is no need to broadcast if you have created your Twitter Account correctly.
Luke pushes everything from Facebook to Twitter and from Instagram to Twitter.
He doesn’t engage on Twitter at all.
You can see the difference in followers when you compare Instagram to Twitter.
So in essence, don’t use a strategy of posting everything from one platform to another and that’s it.
Mix it up a bit.
I had one of my first Tweetups (real life meet up) with this chap who has made an extremely successful business in teaching about Twitter.
I asked permission for me to use this quote and he duly obliged.
Do not sell, do not promote. Build relationships first and selling won’t need to be as difficult.
When you are talking to somebody in real life, you are more likely to use that person’s name in the middle of a sentence rather than at the beginning.
That is the difference between Reply and Mention.
Also a reply will only go to followers that are mutually following.
One way to start engaging with somebody is to share their content.
This is known as a retweet.
There are 2 ways to do this:
Click on the button to retweet – this shares the tweet to all of your followers
Manual retweet enables you to personalise your tweet too.
This is a tweet you want to share, but you changed the original tweet.
With only 140 characters to play with, you may need to shorten the tweet before publishing it by adopting text speak or changing or removing some of the words.
MT shows readers that the original format was different and it is respectful to the original author as you are telling the world that the original tweet was changed.
For Tweets that are really special, rather than retweet, tell the Twitterverse that this tweet is pure gold.
A nugget of information that people must simply read. This is a Hat Tip, a mark of respect to the original tweeter.
Doffing of one’s cap is something that somebody does to acknowledge someone’s achievements.
HT also means, Heard Through – it’s another way of tweeting ‘via’ except it’s one less character. 140 characters is extremely valuable in Twitter
The definition of hashtag clearly states what it is used for: to categorise tweets so that you can search on them later.
This link gives a brief history of how hashtags started and when other Social Media applications started using them.
The ultimate aim for hashtagging is to get your hashtag trending. This shows the current topics that people are talking about in your region and worldwide.
In one of my businesses, I managed to get a hashtag trending in Australia.
We asked Key Persons of Influence to Tweet on their behalf.
Of the top 10 Influencers, KPI was no 1 (makes sense as everybody went to that event); I was number 2 and The Likeability Company was number 3. We sponsored the event, but it gave us credibliTEA to Live Tweet that event. We got KPI trending throughout Australia on that day.
For me, I got a bit of free publiciTEA to be associated with two of the speakers of KPI by having a blog post written about me. That’s free publicity!
For one of my clients, I participated in a trending topic which resulted in a few followers and a bit of engagement. #FoodieBandNames was where people had to come up with a band name but substitute part of the name with food. E.g. Sunny (sunny side up eggs and Pear (Sonny & Cher); The Yeastie Boys (showing a bottle of Marmite), Pie Chemical Romance, The Four Season(ings)
Unfortunately people are using this hashtag to put up pictures of their food blog.
As with anything in a business, getting the balance right, is key.
Hijacking a hashtag for personal gain is poo poo’d in the industry and you will be villified for it.
Two companies shows how their hijacked a political hashtag for selfish gain with terrible consequences.
Lots of complaints occurred, resulting in people boycotting their brands and telling the world publicly how they felt about the tweet.
Be careful when using existing hashtags.
These are a few of the Do’s and Don’t’s of using Hashtags.
Adding a link to a Tweet increases engagement.
Links include blog posts, videos and pictures.
Use bitly.com to shorten the tweet and measure statistics from that tweet.
Some Twitter accounts create an automated response when you follow them.
This will appear in the Direct Messages section.
Direct Messages are private messages between 2 Twitter accounts.
Brand Awareness starts with how you setup your Account.
It’s about your logo, your website, how you speak on Twitter.
How you want to project yourself; how you would like to be seen on Twitter.
Remember your colour scheme and use those colours when creating the account.
Here, Monika and I want to come across as supportive so we wrote our bio in a chatty manner.
We want to be seen as Social Media specialists so we added a few hashtags.
We also want to come across as person, so we added our personal Twitter Accounts in the bio too.
The design, we chose our logo as our profile picture, had a Cover Page created for Podpora and the background of our Twitter page is jet black: one of our corporate colours.
Items to consider for your business:
Twitter Name (Handle)
Use a name that is meaningful to your business
Profile/Bio
Describe who you are and what you do in 140 characters or less
Add hashtags and/or list things that you want people to know about you
Include a link to your website
Make the 140 characters compelling to read
Profile Pic
Change the default Twitter egg to a profile picture of your choice
Make sure you picture is clear, consistent with your other Social Media applications
Company logos might be permitted but if you are the face of your business, use a photograph instead
Design
Change the default Twitter cloud background to a design of your choice
Use the opportuni-tea to change the background which reflects your business
When you first create an account, Twitter will ask you who to follow and also make suggestions for you.
When you start to use Twitter, try finding people to follow. Over time, Twitter will start mayking suggestions for you.
It’s important to follow the right people.
This table gives suggestions on who to follow and why.

The question is always asked. Does Social Media work?
This body art painting was a joint collaboration by two businesses who use Social Media for their business.
The following statistics shows what happened on the days that followed the post being put up on Facebook and Twitter. I have always said that it’s not about the numbers, but who is talking about you.
11 Shares including Brisbane, Melbourne (Business Magazine), Russia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States and Spain, personal pages and fan pages
14 retweets including Australia, US, India, UK and France
My name is permanently displayed on 3 websites and I am associating myself with the winner of the Best of Oz Design for the Australian Body Art Carnivale. How cool izzat?!!?
Summary:
Use Twitter to build relationships with the people you’ve followed.
Listen to what THEY say.
Share THEIR content
Engage with THEM
Remember the 80/20 rule of Twitter
As I have built my reputation online, people have started to share things with me.
Some of the shares have turned into customers and clients, but for pictures like this, it demonstrates that other people are thinking about me, which is great as it helps my bigger picture of wanting Australia and the world to drink better tea. Also – by others sharing tea pictures, it reaches out to a new audience, and remember:
YOU NEVER KNOW WHO IS WATCHING!!
There is a running joke that if you have been held on a call by the Support Team from a corporate company, than rather than hold the line, just tweet to complain. A great company will respond in moments.
You can learn from these big companies. Be responsive and provide excellent Customer Service on Twitter.
Try creating different tweets for the same message.
Test and measure the tweets to see which had the most engagement
Test and measure the time the tweets were posted to see which is most effective.
If your business is global, tweet at various times of the day to accommodate the time zones you want to target.
Don’t approach a journalist when you have a press release.
Build a relationship with them when you don’t have anything to sell.
When the time is right, ask them permission to send them something.
Keep the relationship going after your event.
Hopefully they will keep you in mind when they need a story.
Do NOT pitch them on your first tweet.

Potential Clients became clients when they found me on Google.
They found me because of all the activity I did on Twitter, Blogs, Guest Blogs, videos.
Various clients found me by writing different key words and I didn’t pay a cent for SEO.
Whilst Podpora are on page 1 of Google, we are still competing with Slavic Companies.
But with our #hashtag #SupportEncourageInspire, we have come up in various results, including Google+, Twitter and our blog posts.
Claire Boyles taught me how to use Twitter in London
She has a business coaching business and we met at a networking event 6 years ago.
After attending her Twitter course, I started using it myself and noticed how she was very social on Twitter.
One day she lost her dog. She Tweeted and because her followers became friends, they wanted to help her.
It went viral.
Her dog was found but it got her a lot of press in London where she lives and also Ireland as she is an Irish lass.
This is how Twitter can be really effective for your business. By being personal, and by asking for help
These are my top 10 tips on how to use Twitter going forward:
People always complain that they don’t have time for Twitter. If you can text, you can tweet. It takes a lot of effort to begin with, but after a while as you build your influence you can afford to take a step back.
Listening is probably one of the greatest skills you can have for your business. The View Conversation section of your tweets helps you to jog your memory on the conversation you’ve had with someone and enables you to listen to find out ways in which you can engage.
Speak in your business language. Your business language is part of your branding. You can be casual but be friendly, respectful and mindful too.
Be a rockstar in your own field. Share content from your “competitors”
What would you talk about at a BBQ? You wouldn’t just be talking about your business would you? Allow people into your personal life. How much you let them in, is entirely up to you but allow people to get to know the person behind the business.
Relationship Building is the key to using Twitter. Remain authentic at all times.
This was written tongue-in-cheek as a reminder that Social Media is not about Likes, Followers and Connections. Ignore the number and hone in on the people you want to talk to.
Targetting your audience, not just to people who are your potential clients but to those that can help you reach those potential clients. People you can consider collaborating with.
Engage your audience. If you have looked at your notifications and you are stuck for something to write. Ask questions!
And Keep Going. This is the most important. Most people start and give up after several weeks. Twitter is not an overnight success. It takes time to build relationships and make money on Twitter so please be patient and keep going and good luck!!
My top 10 tips are featured in a book along with 17 other authors on marketing for Twitter.
In our Pod Blog, Monika and I have written blog posts for businesses and startups.
Some of the posts are social media, some of them Twitter which I have shown here.
The last 2 blog posts, give you an introduction to automating Social Media and also on how to increase your reach.
We’re going to be run a course about this in the future, so watch this space!
