Blogging and text messaging merged in 2006 with the creation of Twitter by Jack Dorsey. Twitter allowed users to send short messages of 140 characters or less called tweets. Hashtags were introduced as a way to organize tweets by topic. Libraries began using Twitter to share information about events and resources with followers. The largest library Twitter accounts have thousands of followers and provide a way to engage users online.
