April Dunnam led an introduction to branding and design in SharePoint 2013. She discussed theming with composed looks using the color palette tool. The design manager allows importing HTML master pages and page layouts through a user interface rather than SharePoint Designer. It supports creating complete custom branding. Display templates control search results rendering. Device channels map interfaces to specific devices. Design packages allow deploying custom branding to other sites and farms. The design must be published and approved after adding or changing elements.
Learn how to utilize search to create a dynamic and engaging intranet. We will discuss Display Templates and how they work with the Content Search Web Part and Search Results Web Part to customize the display of data.

Designing a great SharePoint Online intranet in Office 365Danny Burlage
Designing an Intranet in SharePoint Online could potentially turn out to be a disaster. Developers build the intranet with On Premise SharePoint specifications in mind, resulting in a slow intranet.
SharePoint Online however is a great tool to build your company intranet. Many large organizations use it to communicate with their employees throughout the world.
This presentation describes the most commonly made mistakes when building out a SharePoint Online intranet. Thing you need to consider in order for the Intranet not to be slow but also to make sure you get the most out of your environment.
The presentation was first given by Danny Burlage from Wortell at SharePoint Connections 2014 and slightly modified repeated at the Metalogix Conference Roadmap to the Cloud.
In this session, we are going to brand a SharePoint site from start to finish. We will use SharePoint Designer, HTML and custom CSS to design a site how not to look like SharePoint. Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Design Manager overhauls how we brand SharePoint. SharePoint Designer is no longer a viable option for creating master pages, page layouts because they removed the design view. This allows non-SharePoint focused web designers to provide you with an HTML/CSS layout that you can upload.
Very important to note that when using Design Manager you must treat the Branding Assets as Local Files. If you try to make changes on your desktop and re-upload them to the Master Page Gallery, your changes will not be updated.
Make sure you enable these features to use Design Manager
Access Design ManagerOpen In Explorer View
The first step is to get your HTML Master Page Uploaded and Converted to a SharePoint Master using Design ManagerSometimes a Master Page is all that is needed and you can use out of the box Page Layouts
You will run into all sorts of errors if you HTML is not XML Compliant. Save many headaches and run all HTML through an XML Validator before importing. There are several online validators. I like this one the best.
Design Manager is like Ikea furniture. You have all of the pieces but you have to put them together.
This shows the Snippet Manager for SharePoint 2013.You have your Snippet Controls at the TopYou see a Preview of the Snippet Below and can apply properties to your snippetThe HTML is on the bottom right, this is what you will insert into your HTML File
Your life will be much easier if you or your Web Designer creates the HTML with Design Manager in Mind.Clearly mark containers with comments and names that match the SharePoint ElementsExample: <Div ID=“Search”>
This is an example of a well formatted HTML Master Page. The divs are clearly marked with comments to show what SharePoint Snippets are intended to be input into them.
Very Important to not make changes to the Master Page when using Design Manager. The .Master is dependent on the HTML file. Any changes should be made in the HTML file and those changes are reflected in the .Master.
Review a prototypeLook for snippet commentsImportAdd logo snippetMove main placeholder
A Page Layout HTML should have the containers for your webpart zones. Just like with the Master Page, make any changes to your HTML not the ASPX. You will need to input snippets for your web part zones

You can customize display templates with Design Manager.

You don’t have to create a feature in visual studio to deploy your Design Packages….Design Manager will do this for you.It packages everything into a WSP just like Visual Studio would which you can import anywhere.
Quickly create a design package
When you import a design it doesn’t publish and approve your design files. Although it automatically applies them, only you will be able to see them until you publish and apply.
