4. History of PowerApps
• Previously known as Project Siena
• Originally meant to spin up Windows 8 desktop enterprise-
specific apps quickly
• Rebranded PowerApps at the end of 2015
• Windows 10 should work on any device, so PowerApps focus
is now on mobile devices (probably even more so than on
desktops)
• Integration with Azure now front and center
• Use AAD to control user access and security
• Use Azure App Service to host custom APIs used by
PowerApps
5. Online Resources
• Introducing PowerApps
• PowerApps Tutorials
• PowerApps on Channel 9
• Azure PowerApps documentation
• Project Siena (beta)
• Project Siena documentation on TechNet
• PowerApps.Microsoft.com
6. Licenses

7. Desktop vs Cloud
• PowerApps are actual applications that run on a device
• PowerApps can be hosted in the Cloud
• Opening a PowerApp from a link online is like opening a
Word document in your desktop Word application
8. Accessing PowerApps From Office
365
• PowerApps available
from the App Launcher
• Browser reflects what you
might see in the PowerApps
Windows 10 app
• Apps saved to cloud are
available from PowerApps
menu
9. Getting Started with Desktop App
• Download from Windows Store
• http://aka.ms/powerappswin
14. Adding a Connection
Connections available to
PowerApps in general
and used by individual
apps
• Fiile Connections
• Content tab (ribbon)
Data Sources Insert
Your Data (Options
pane)
16. Select a Site and List
Select the list that will serve as
the data source that the app
reads from and writes to
17. Starting Point
• Browse Screen, Details
Screen, and Edit
Screen
• Choose Layout,
Content, and Theme
from Quick Tools
• Detailed functionality in
ribbon
23. Thoughts About Development
• Limited ability to handle complex data types in
SharePoint
• Complex list and libraries in SharePoint
• Complex column types
• Super-power users could probably use, but not for
“everyday” users when using SPO data source
• Custom-built back-end APIs provide easier-to-use data
source interface for end users
