This presentation discusses the portrayal of various mental health treatment modalities in media and how they can negatively impact perceptions of mental illness. Insulin shock therapy, which involved inducing seizures through high insulin doses, is depicted in the film A Beautiful Mind in a frightening way that exaggerates the treatment's negative effects. Pharmaceutical advertisements often only show successful outcomes without mentioning potential issues. A film clip depicts electroconvulsive therapy in an inaccurate and stigmatizing manner by showing it being forcibly administered with aggressive music. In general, inaccurate media portrayals can worsen stigma around mental illness and its treatments.
