This document summarizes the potential dangers of Ritalin use for ADHD and alternatives to consider. It notes that Ritalin use has increased dramatically but carries serious health risks like increased cancer risk. Side effects can include rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, and depression. Long term effects may include neural system issues and decreased ability to experience pleasure. The document also discusses how chiropractic care may help address ADHD symptoms by correcting structural misalignments in the upper cervical spine that can disrupt brain stem function and cause issues like hyperactivity and inability to focus. Chiropractic aims to improve sensory input to the brain stem in order to improve neurological output and function.

Review by Louis B. Cady, MD (Cady Wellness Institute) of the interdigitation between psychiatric disorders, chemical dependency and issues in treatment and recovery. This presentation reviews the enormous intertwinement between untreated ADHD and the development and maintenance of substance use and chemical dependency, examining both biological and psychodynamic influences. It concludes with tips from the recovery community and recommendations on how treatment teams can collaborate with each other.

Natural Treatments for ADHD - December 7th, 2016 - Saint Marys HospitalLouis Cady, MD
This lecture, presented December 7th, 2016 for the Parent Support Group for children with ADHD and Sensory Processing Disorders, was presented at Saint Marys Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. In this one hour presentation, Dr. Cady broke down some of the alternative treatments for ADHD, grounded in the peer-reviewed literature, that do not involve the prescription of typical psychiatric medication for ADHD. He emphasized, natural, holistic treatments to treat deficiencies and restore balance of nutrients and specific essential fatty acids.
Psychological depression prevention programs for 5-10 year olds: What’s the e...Health Evidence™
Health Evidence hosted a 90 minute webinar on psychological depression prevention programs for children and adolescents. This work received support from KT Canada funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Key messages and implications for practice were presented.
This webinar focused on interpreting the evidence in the following review:

Dr. Colin Depp, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego and CREST.BD member, describes research on the changes, including positive ones, that occur as people grow older with bipolar disorder. He shares evidence and considerations for treatments for bipolar disorder in older adults, as well as an overview of the lifestyle and behavioral determinants of healthy aging. He also presents new research on the importance of these factors in aging well with bipolar disorder.
Colin Depp, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. He is also Associate Director of Research Education and Training Division of the San Diego Clinical Translational Science Institute and psychologist at the Veterans Administration Healthcare System in San Diego. ADHD Awareness
ADHD is NOT a Common Ailment and Ritalin is NOT the Only Cure
Awareness is Key!
Using the media, CHADD (Children and Adults with ADHD) and other similar organizations are
trying to sell the idea that ADHD is a common disease with drugs like Ritalin as its only cure.
However, the head of the National Institute of Mental Health has conceded that his organization
is “concerned about improper diagnosis of ADHD” as the number of children on Ritalin has
jumped from 900,000 in 1990 to nearly 5 million in recent years. A recent study at Brookhaven
National Laboratory revealed that Ritalin has more potent effects on the brain than even
cocaine! How can such a drug be so highly endorsed? It should be noted that the makers of
Ritalin have donated over $1 million to CHADD since 1988; and their literature supports, even
encourages, its use.
Cancer Risk!
It seems that the American Academy of Pediatrics endorsed the use of Ritalin all too soon in
October 2001, despite “clear evidence of the drug’s cancer risks of which parents, teachers and
school nurses, besides most pediatricians and psychiatrists, still remain uniformed and
unaware.”
In March 2005 a study linked Ritalin with increased risks of cancer. The study of 12 children on
the drug found that all of them experienced a “significant increase in chromosome
abnormalitites [only] three months after starting Ritalin.”
“Chromosome damage has been linked to heightened cancer risk and to other health
problems. It was pretty surprising to [Dr. Randa A. El Zein] that all of the children taking
[the drug] showed an increase in chromosome abnormalities in a relatively short period
of time” ~Randa A. El Zein, MD, PhD.

Can Chiropractic Help with ADHD?
Parents of children under chiropractic care report back to their family Chiropractors the amazing
changes resulting from chiropractic adjustments. "Subluxations" are structural misalignments
that cause neurological dysfunctions. The specific purpose of chiropractic is to identify and
eliminate such subluxations.
Of course, there is no one specific subluxation that leads to the neurological manifestation of
ADHD. However, the symptoms related to ADHD (hyperactivity, inability to pay attention,
impulsivity) seem to indicate a disturbance with brain stem function. A subluxation to the upper
