As we are shifting from centralised energy generation to decentralised energy systems, the structures of energy markets are changing and Community Energy is emerging as a major player in the future of Australia's Energy landscape. The conference provided a key opportunity to address the challenges and opportunities for renewable community power projects.
The Community Energy Conference brought together community representatives, corporate energy stakeholders, project organisations, government representatives, property developers, community owned retailers, engineers and potential investors to showcase latest project developments and discussed advances and barriers.
The agenda covered key topics such as local participation, finance & investment, regulation and policies, utility models and microgrid, system design and network changes, power contracts, renewable energy integration and infrastructure.
Greg Garvin, Executive General Manager, People, Strategy & Stakeholders at TransGrid gave a presentation on the topic ‘Grid innovation: pathways top a low carbon future’. In the presentation Greg covered what grid of the future might look like, the active role TransGrid is taking to shape the grid of the future, and highlight some of our activities that demonstrate being proactive including iDemand, Renewable Energy Hub and the R&D project to digitise secondary systems.
Capstone project completed with Alan Thai and Arthur Yip. Briefly, we describe our MATLAB model for a renewable energy hub consisting of solar panels, wind turbines and an electrolyzer for generating hydrogen. The generated hydrogen was then used to run hydrogen-powered forklifts. The environmental and financial analysis were shown to be sufficient to warrant further investigation.

Removing carbon from the processes which are essential to our modern world will be one of our generation's defining challenges. Central to this goal will be the role of Energy Storage within our modern infrastructure. Energy storage will need to be placed at all parts in our infrastructure - both in front and behind the meter applications will be key. These diverse applications will need a portfolio of technologies to deliver services to a range of customers. In this talk we explore some innovation possibilities with a focus on (a) Li-ion roadmap and the role of digitisation, (b) Flow batteries for longer term storage and finally (c) Power2X technologies for Energy Reserve and Chemical Industry.

The energy industry is rapidly evolving to take advantage of renewable resources and Western Power is embracing new technologies that will improve service and reliability to our customers. New and improving technologies such as solar, wind, wave and most importantly batteries are changing the way we think about the delivery and storage of electricity. One of these developments is the microgrid, which is essentially a small scale power grid that can operate independently (in ‘island mode’) or connect with the main electrical grid – think of a small suburb, or estate, that shares electricity and the cost of the infrastructure. A microgrid needs to control the flow of electricity of low or medium voltage, but does not need connection to a centralised generation or transmission network. Western Power has trialled the world’s first microgrid project that combines wave energy, solar (photovoltaic) energy, a desalination plant, and energy storage that connects to our large electricity network.
Thair demonstrates extensive engineering experience focused on power systems planning and real-time operation. This includes experience in load, generation and microgrids grid connection, renewable energies, transmission networks planning and stability. This experience is supported by his academic research at the University of Tasmania and Edith Cowan University, including invitation to review international journals and conferences in the field of Energy Systems and Artificial Intelligence. Thair has previously held roles with Canegie Wave Energy and Deng Kai.

Laurie Curro holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from WAIT (now Curtin University) and a Master of Engineering Science (UWA) as well as Graduate Diploma Technology Management (Deakin).
He has over 30 years’ experience working in the Power Transmission and Distribution industry, with particular interest in distribution and power system planning, distribution design, distribution reliability power quality, system operations and maintenance and smart grid planning.

The four key challenges for Solomon Power in the future are effective and efficient delivery of the SBD 1 Billion capital programme, development and sustenance of human capital, increasing the footprint of the electricity network and to offer electricity at lower prices. Solomon Power are conscious of the high cost of electricity in Solomon Islands due to our heavy reliance on diesel and are therefore actively working with all our stakeholders to pursue initiatives to bring down the price of electricity. We hope the renewable energy proposals on the table, on completion, will assist Solomon Power to reduce the price of electricity.This includes the recent commisioning of the 1MW Hendeson solar farm, 150kW Buala mini-Hydro and upgrade to he Honiara and Lungga power stations.
Hemant Kumar is a Chartered Electrical Engineer with more than 28 years of experience in the Power Industry in Australia, New Zealand and in the South Pacific. He has held senior management roles while working for electricity distribution, transmission and generation utilities. His roles included Team leadership, Planning Manager/Engineer, Network Development Manager, Standards Manager, Design Manager, Project Manager, and Contracts Manager/Engineer. He has led an amalgamation of several design standards. He has been responsible for development of asset management plans, network planning, and optimization and capital expenditure programs. Although the Hawaiian Islands are blessed with an abundance of renewable energy sources including excellent solar and wind resources, and have the nation’s most aggressive renewable energy standards, the state still rely heavily on fossil fuels for electricity generation. With isolated (unconnected) island grids and sparse systems on some islands, integration of the intermittent renewable generation systems has been challenging. The Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) at the University of Hawaii has initiated an integrated effort involving modeling, testing, and demonstration to identify and validate pathways to higher renewable integration. In this talk, I will discuss the analysis being used to identify strategic paths forward and will describe several projects currently underway including the Maui Smart Grid Demonstration Project, the Smart Grid Inverter Project and several grid-scale battery energy storage projects.
Richard Rocheleau (PhD, Chemical Engineering, University of DE), has over 35 years of experience in renewable energy, with an emphasis in the areas of photovoltaics, hydrogen fuel cells, and energy systems. Dr. Rocheleau joined the faculty of the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute at the University of Hawaii in 1988 and was appointed Director in 2000. Under his direction, the Institute is leading the development of public‐private partnerships focused on the development, testing and integration of alternative energy technologies into the electrical grid. HNEI has major funding from the US Department of Energy and the Office of Naval Research. Dr. Rocheleau was also successful in positioning the Institute to receive a portion of the ‘barrel tax’, established by the Hawaii State Legislature supporting studies for integration of renewable energy technologies into the grid intended to assist the state to meet its aggressive renewable energy portfolio goals.

In 2014, Heathrow’s Terminal 2 Retail Fit-out Sustainability Project won the ‘Most energy efficient project of the year’ at the Environment and Energy Awards. This was for Discovery Mill’s approach and the work the Heathrow team collaboratively achieved with Heathrow’s retail business partners in reducing energy usage in T2 Retail. Predicted energy savings were assessed to be 17-24% compared to existing Terminal 5 operations, with additional direct savings for Heathrow through reduced central building plant consumption as well as reduced infrastructure costs.

In 2014, Heathrow’s Terminal 2 Retail Fit-out Sustainability Project won the ‘Most energy efficient project of the year’ at the Environment and Energy Awards. This was for Discovery Mill’s approach and the work the Heathrow team collaboratively achieved with Heathrow’s retail business partners in reducing energy usage in T2 Retail. Predicted energy savings were assessed to be 17-24% compared to existing Terminal 5 operations, with additional direct savings for Heathrow through reduced central building plant consumption as well as reduced infrastructure costs.
