Why "mobile first" isn't enough - Developing a better user experienceKevin Powell
"Mobile first," is a concept that serves us well as a design tool, putting constraints on our messaging, layout, etc. But to use "mobile first" as a complete mobile strategy can lead to some dangerous lines of thought.
There's a bigger picture that needs to be seen, and it's what we've always done when developing experiences for the web. We need to put the "Experience First." Then we can think about "mobile", "desktop", "lean-back", and whatever other technologies are released in the next several years. It's not about devices, it's about users and experiences.
Presentation first given at BarCamp Nashville in October of 2011.
A discussion about the benefits of a mobile-first responsive approach to web development, why it is as important for desktop environments as it is for mobile devices and why it is the future of web development.
Along the way we'll dispell some of the myths you have heard about responsive web development, leaving you no excuses to not start your next project thinking mobile-first.
Coming soon to a device near you.
This presentation was first shown at the international Joomla conference, J and Beyond 2012, by Seth Warburton of Internet Inspired.

Mobile first and responsive web design aren’t simply two great tastes that go great together. No they represent much more than that. Mobile first responsive web design is the responsible way to build responsive designs.
Mobile first responsive web design is the best way to build something that is both responsive from a layout AND a performance perspective.
But if mobile first is the right way to do responsive design, then why are so few people doing it? In this presentation, we’ll dig into why mobile first responsive design matters and the five techniques necessary to make it work.

Orchestrating Your Global CMS; a planning frameworkBarbara Holmes
When it comes to a content management system (CMS) it’s tempting to jump into execution; to get that website or sites set up quickly. That’s how a CMS is sold, right? There’s a promise that the gnarly inter-departmental problems will melt away, that content will create itself, that with a flip of a switch your enterprise will be a global market leader.
The truth is that the magic of a CMS doesn’t happen without a lot of thinking and planning beforehand. Like a symphony orchestra, there are a lot of parts to coordinate and all must work in harmony to produce the desired results. This publication shares some of the things ISITE has learned through helping clients with CMS implementations, migrations, global rollouts, website redesigns, and content strategy.
This is an ebook that I wrote as my last thought leadership piece and content contribution to ISITE Design, December 2014.

Role of Mobility in Workplace TransformationAVI-SPL
Mobility is changing the workplace and the way agencies serve the public.
Mobile technology is by far the biggest factor driving change in the modern workplace. And government agencies are not immune. Mobile has revolutionized traditional employment with concepts like BYOD, remote working, and the virtual workplace, and while the private sector is definitely the frontrunner in embracing the digitally driven work environment, government agencies are beginning to dip their feet into mobility and mobile-driven concepts. Modern agencies need a strong tech adoption strategy, including cloud, federated networks, and other scalable option. Download our free whitepaper to learn how state government can deploy these solutions while still remaining focused on simplicity, security, and the risks related to BYOD > http://hubs.ly/H01bxm50
Mobile Goes Mainstreet: Consumers Lead the Way — Key Trends and Investment Op...Linda Gridley
The number of smartphone users in the U.S. is consistently growing and the connected user is turning to mobile more and more frequently for everyday consumption. Global mobile data traffic is predicted to increase 26-fold between 2010 and 2015. Smartphone and tablet revenues overtook traditional desktop and laptop revenues in 2013. At the same time, the amount of time users are spending on mobile daily is increasing. Mobile commerce sales are reaching all-time highs, and now represent 12% of total digital commerce, while mobile traffic represent about 40% for major eCommerce retailers such as Amazon, eBay, Apple, and Walmart.
The mobile industry was unquestionably the most important growth channel across digital media. Some of the most important trends we’ve seen in the sector include:
Average mobile (plus tablet) time spend now equal to desktop
Mobile is no longer just for gaming. Growing number
of use cases and apps hitting mass adoption— utilities, productivity, shopping, media & entertainment
Total mobile ad revenue grew twofold in 2013, and still only represents 2% of total ad spend but 12% of total media time spend
Strong M&A and funding environment – First $1bn M&A deal in mobile. Q3’13 was record quarter for mobile
Digital media leaders such as Facebook and Twitter realigned their organizations to mobile over the past two years and now see 40% plus of their revenue from the mobile channel
The evolution of mobile as the next computing platform is just beginning to take shape, bringing new billion market opportunities to the digital media ecosystem. We believe it is still early in this evolution and expect to see new technologies and innovative applications to fuel continued growth over the next five years.

We all know the numbers. There are more than 100 million mobile subscriptions, 2/3 of which use an internet-enabled handset. We’re the 4th fastest growing mobile internet market in the world, and the fastest-growing Smartphone market in Southeast Asia. We’re the 7th largest Facebook market in the world, and 55% now access Facebook through mobile. Mobile is big.
If mobile is big, as most of you will probably agree, since you’re here - where’s the money? Why are mobile budgets so small relative to its reach?
