A transformer is an electrical device that takes in electricity at a higher voltage and outputs it at a lower voltage. It works by using the principles of electromagnetism - an alternating current running through coils wrapped around an iron core creates an alternating magnetic field, which induces a current in another set of coils wrapped around the same core. The fewer coils on the output side result in a lower output voltage than the input voltage, "stepping down" the voltage. Transformers are commonly seen on utility poles and are used to safely reduce high-voltage power for use in homes and devices.
