This document proposes a framework for dynamically physicalizing data. It describes the Tangible Hologram (TangHo) platform, which uses a 6 degree of freedom robotic arm prototype built from Lego Mindstorms. The arm can interact bidirectionally with a user through holograms displayed via HoloLens. Challenges include inverse kinematics since the final system will be body mounted. The document concludes that the conceptual framework and TangHo prototype allow for data-driven physicalization of large multi-dimensional datasets through dynamic and interactive designs.

However, due to a multitude of proprietary document formats with rather simple link models, today's possibilities for creating hyperlinks between snippets of information in different document formats are limited. In previous work, we have presented a dynamically extensible cross-document link service overcoming the limitations of the simple link models supported by most existing document formats. Based on a plug-in mechanism, our link service enables the linking across different document types. In this paper, we assess the extensibility of our link service by integrating some document formats as well as third-party document viewers. We illustrate the flexibility of creating advanced hyperlinks across these document formats and viewers that cannot be realised with existing linking solutions or link models of existing document formats. A user study further investigates the user experience when creating and navigating cross-document hyperlinks.

While there have been dramatic increases in the use of digital technologies for information storage, processing and delivery over the last few decades, the affordances of paper have ensured its retention as a key information medium. Despite predictions of the paperless office, paper is ever more present in our daily work. However, there is a gap between the paper and digital worlds: information present in paper documents cannot be seamlessly transferred to digital media and digital services are not easily accessible from the paper world.
ABSTRACT: In this talk I will present an information-centric approach for integrating paper with digital as well as physical media based on a general cross-media information platform (iServer). Some details about the architecture and implementation of the iServer platform as well as the underlying resource-selector-link (RSL) metamodel for cross-media linking will be highlighted. A selection of interactive paper applications that have been developed based on this platform over the past nine years will be presented, including the EdFest interactive paper guide for the Edinburgh festivals, the PaperPoint presentation tool as well as the PaperProof proof-editing solution. Challenges and solutions for novel forms of interactive paper and cross-media publishing are discussed based on the presented applications. This includes specific extensions of the iServer platform and RSL model as well as the application of our solution in new domains such as digital libraries, cross-media annotation and retrieval or personal cross-media information management that goes beyond the hierarchical information management imposed by the desktop metaphor.

Blockchain technology (BCT) enables a common, consistent view of some shared state among agents in distributed systems. Smart contracts (SC) are an emerging computational model allowing users to deploy arbitrary computations on a blockchain-based system. Whereas BCT and SC are currently exploited mostly for financial transactions, identity management, and asset property tracking, they have the potential to positively affect the development of many research and technology areas, such as knowledge-intensive, agent-based, intelligent, and pervasive systems.

At the FOSS4G NA 2019, I talked about the recent achievements and improvements of mago3D project, an open source based 'Digital Twin' platform. mago3D(http://mago3d.com) is relatively new project that was first released in July 2017. The ultimate goal of mago3D project is developing an open source based digital twin platform that can replicate and simulate the real world objects, processes, and phenomena on web environment. mago3D is on its way to achieve this goal now. Currently mago3D more focuses on managing and visualization of various types of 3D data ranging from simple box style extrusion model, point clouds, realistic mesh, to complex BIM(Building Information Modeling), AEC(Architecture, Engineering, Construction) data. mago3D supports industry standards 3D formats such as IFC, CityGML, IndoorGML, 3DS, Collada DAE, OBJ, LAS, JT, and so on. mago3D has been used in various industry sectors including ship building, urban management, indoor data management, and national defense. In this talk I showcased several real projects that had employed the mago3D and talked about what I'd learned during this projects. I also talked more about the future plan of mago3D towards visualizing/simulating of {static and dynamic data}, {underground and overground features}, {indoor and outdoor spaces}, {objects and phenomena} at the same time on web browser.
As a tech-savvy country, there're lots of discussions and activities around digital twin in Korea. I also shared my real experiences on this in this talk.

A gentle introduction to the Blockchain and Smart ContractsGiovanni Ciatto
Abstract: The blockchain is a novel approach to distributed systems enabling a common, consistent view of some shared state among distributed agents.
Smart contracts are an emerging computational model — heavily influenced by the object oriented one — allowing users to deploy arbitrary computations on a blockchain-based system.
They aim at automatically regulating (financial) interactions among individuals or organisations.
It turns out that smart contracts are essentially a novel way to perform State Machine Replication, also considering the economical aspects of computations.
Despite the very interesting applications envisioned for smart contracts — mostly related to finance, identity management or asset tracking — they are far from perfection because some characteristic traits like, for instance, semantic subtleties within the imperative code, lack control flow encapsulation, source code immutability, and so on.
In this talk we gently introduce the blockchain research area with a top-down approach, starting from a general overview of the blockchain's main elements, and moving towards a comprehensive tour of their inter-dependencies.
Finally, we present a number of research directions which are of interest for our team, mainly aimed at evaluating the consequences of combining the blockchain techonology and the smart contract abstraction with other programming paradigms and computational models.

Indoor Positioning Using the OpenHPS FrameworkBeat Signer

Hybrid positioning frameworks use various sensors and algorithms to enhance positioning through different types of fusion. The optimisation of the fusion process requires the testing of different algorithm parameters and optimal lowas well as high-level sensor fusion techniques. The presented OpenHPS open source hybrid positioning system is a modular framework managing individual nodes in a process network, which can be configured to support concrete positioning use cases or to adapt to specific technologies. This modularity allows developers to rapidly develop and optimise their positioning system while still providing them the flexibility to add their own algorithms. In this paper we discuss how a process network developed with OpenHPS can be used to realise a customisable indoor positioning solution with an offline and online stage, and how it can be adapted for high accuracy or low latency. For the demonstration and validation of our indoor positioning solution, we further compiled a publicly available dataset containing data from WLAN access points, BLE beacons as well as several trajectories that include IMU data.

Personalised Learning Environments Based on Knowledge Graphs and the Zone of ...Beat Signer

The learning of new knowledge and skills often requires previous knowledge, which can lead to some frustration if a teacher does not know a learner's exact knowledge and skills and therefore confronts them with exercises that are too difficult to solve. We present a solution to address this issue when teaching techniques and skills in the domain of table tennis, based on the concrete needs of trainers that we have investigated in a survey. We present a conceptual model for the representation of knowledge graphs as well as the level at which individual players already master parts of this knowledge graph. Our fine-grained model enables the automatic suggestion of optimal exercises in a player's so-called zone of proximal development, and our domain-specific application allows table tennis trainers to schedule their training sessions and exercises based on this rich information. In an initial evaluation of the resulting solution for personalised learning environments, we received positive and promising feedback from trainers. We are currently investigating how our approach and conceptual model can be generalised to some more traditional educational settings and how the personalised learning environment might be further improved based on the expressive concepts of the presented model.

Codeschool in a Box: A Low-Barrier Approach to Packaging Programming CurriculaBeat Signer

The tech industry is a fast-growing field, with many companies facing issues in finding skilled workers to fill their open vacancies. At the same time, many people have limited access to the quality education necessary to enter this job market. To address this issue, various small and often volunteer-run non-profit organisations have emerged to up-skill capable learners. However, these organisations face tight constraints and many challenges while trying to design and deliver high-quality education to their learners. In this position paper, we discuss some of these challenges and present a preliminary version of a curriculum packager addressing some of these issues. Our proposed solution, inspired by first-hand experience in these organisations as well as computing education research (CER), is based on a combination of micromaterials, study lenses and a companion mobile application. While our solution is designed for the specific context of small organisations providing vocational ICT training, it can also be applied to the broader domain of learning environments facing similar constraints.

Designing Prosthetic Memory: Audio or Transcript, That is the QuestionBeat Signer

ABSTRACT: Audio recordings and the corresponding transcripts are often used as prosthetic memory (PM) after meetings and lectures. While current research is mainly developing novel features for prosthetic memory, less is known on how and why audio recordings and transcripts are used. We investigate how users interact with audio and transcripts as prosthetic memory, whether interaction strategies change over time, and analyse potential differences in accuracy and efficiency. In contrast to the subjective user perception, our results show that audio recordings and transcripts are equally efficient, but that transcripts are generally preferred due to their easily accessible contextual information. We further identified that prosthetic memory is not only used as a recall aid but frequently also consulted for verifying information that has been recalled from organic memory (OM). Our findings are summarised in a number of design implications for prosthetic memory solutions.

ABSTRACT: While popular digital maps support an unprecedented number of use cases, new reference map customization tools have been created for purposes for which those maps fall short. With the goal of informing the design of this new class of cartographic tools, we present the first study of naturalistic (“bespoke”) map customization behavior. Through a mixed methods and mixed-media approach involving a survey, the analysis of a corpus of customized maps, and an interview with a power user, we find that bespoke map customization is a relatively common activity and identify frequent use cases as well as map customization strategies. We discuss these use cases and strategies in detail, and propose design implications for future customization tools, such as the use of templates for common use cases, adaptability for various customization styles and the support of multimedia interaction.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
