This document discusses different network topologies including ring, star, and bus. In a ring topology, nodes are connected in a closed loop and messages travel in one direction. A star topology centers around a central node that connects to all other nodes and through which all messages are sent. In a bus topology, all nodes connect to a single communication line along which messages travel in both directions. Ethernet has become the standard for local area networks. The star topology offers flexibility but the central node is a single point of failure. The bus topology is easy to set up but breaks are difficult to identify.
