Lord Fogarty Essay
The first poem I will be discussing is Fellow Being by Lionel Fogarty. Sound techniques such as
consonance are used in this poem to invite the reader to understand how Australia can function as an
unwelcoming home to the Indigenous Australians. Fogarty writes in the poem that The kissing of
winds to trees are the love between aborigines . Through the repetition of the soft drawn out s sound in
the words kissing and trees , the quality of the sound portrays a sense of love and safety. Furthermore,
the word kissing , with its connotations of affection and love, and trees with its inferences of freedom
and life emphasises the connection indigenous Australians had with the old Australia. The reminiscent
style of the poem reveals the inhospitable nature of modern Australia towards Aborigines.
Fogarty also uses image techniques such as metaphors to describe the interdependent nature of the
relationship the indigenous Australians had with the land. By emphasizing this important relationship,
Fogarty reveals the fractured bond that the white Australians forced upon the Aborigines. The phrase
aboriginal is the bread equates the indigenous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of consonance in this poem encourages the reader to view modern Australia as an inhospitable
home for indigenous Australians. Noonuccal describes the Aborigines as, A Semi naked band, subdued
and silent . The alliteration of the soft, drawn out s sound in the words subdued and silent conveys to
the reader an atmosphere of silence and forlorn resignation. In particular, the word subdued , with its
connotations of unresponsiveness and being withdrawn, further emphasises the conflict between the
white and indigenous Australians. This conflict ultimately separated the Aborigines from their land,
resulting in Australia becoming a hostile home for the original

Dbq Political Campaign
From the perspective of a candidate, the main goal of a political campaign is to win votes. Politicians
use campaign propaganda to help achieve that goal. There are six primary strategies used in campaign
propaganda: stacking the deck; testimonials/endorsements; plain folks; negative ads; glittering
generalities; and guilt by association/coat tailing. A campaign is measured by its effectiveness,
whether it is informative, and if it is ethical. An effective campaign wins votes; an informative
campaign gets the message out to the voters; and an ethical campaign respects the opponent and is
truthful (Campaign Propaganda Mini Q). Using these measuring sticks to evaluate the six strategies,
the most valuable (in order of strength) are: negative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bush campaigned against Michael Dukakis in the 1988 presidential election (Document D). Bush used
negative ads to influence voters into believing Dukakis, if elected, would make the country weak in
defense based on his voting patterns. Bush wanted voters to mistrust Dukakis so he could win the
election. Dukakis failed to effectively counter Bush s negative attacks. Consequently, the negative ad
strategy worked in his favor, as Bush became the 41st President of the United States. However, using
the measuring sticks as a gauge, the strategy was not ethical as it was not completely honest and was
disrespectful. Similarly, during the 1992 presidential election, Bill Clinton used the same strategy to
defeat his opponent, the incumbent George H.W. Bush (Document D). Clinton used ads that sent a
message that Bush could not be trusted because he promised no new taxes, but then raised taxes.
Using the measuring sticks, this strategy was effective as Clinton was elected over Bush; however,
Clinton was not completely honest and was disrespectful to his opponent. In the 2012 presidential
election, the incumbent Barack Obama campaigned against Mitt Romney (Document E). Both
candidates used glittering generalities to appeal to voter s emotions. Obama used Hope and Forward
and Romney used Believe in America. Neither of these catch phrases were informative as they did not
provide any real information to the voters. While the strategy may

Operation Eagle Claw, And It Was A Failure
November 4th 1979American personnel at the US embassy are taken hostage in Teheran, Iran. The
United States had never faced a hostage situation like this before. It did not have the Joint Special
Operations Task Force trained in planning the mission or the resources for low visibility clandestine
missions. The mission to save the hostages is called Operation Eagle Claw, and it was a failure. This
mission on the other hand highlighted areas in the military that need tobe improved, and when the
country required to carry out special operation missions in the future those resources would be there
and ready.
Militant student, followers of the Ayatollah stormed the Embassy and took all personnel hostage. This
was the second time in 1979 the embassy was taken and only a few people remained behind its gates.
The students only planned to take the hostages for a few days, hopping that the United States would
return the ousted Shah, to face trial. When the US refused, to return the Shah, the stalemate began, and
the students held the hostages for 444 days.
The US realized that the hostages are not being released as before, and a rescue mission was needed to
secure their freedom. A group was quickly put together to plan the rescue. Dubbed Operation Rice
Bowl, flag officers from every branch of the military, began to plan the mission and gather
intelligence. The officers of the planning, operations ensured that every branch of the military would
have a piece of the mission; no

Negative Regulation Of Sheepmeat Odour And Biogen ( SEPW1 )
For the SNP g.53617063 G A mutation in the present study, quantitative realtime polymerase chain
reaction (qRT PCR) analysis revealed that individuals with AA genotype expressed lower mRNA
levels than those with AG and GG genotype. But it requires further investigation to determine whether
this difference is also associated with mRNA stability. It is widely accepted that SEPW1 is a negative
regulator of sheepmeat odour and flavour, and decreased SEPW1 mRNA expression levels could
cause lower odour and flavour. From these results, we can postulate that the SEPW1 gene is
negatively associated with odour and flavour, or that the sepw1 gene may affect fatty acid (FA)
metabolism and f the triglyceride (Kubiak et al 2016). The mRNA ... Show more content on

Contact Movie Analysis
Contact
Based on the previous Carl Sagan s novel about an adolescent scientist s determinations to make
Contact with life itself beyond just our universe. The most famous quote that Sagan tells the story of
this movie is that there is billions and billions of stars up there . The fascinating science fiction
film/thriller of that century, Contact, combines many concepts that do not usually go together or are
thought about in relation to each other. That being the concept of faith, politics, and most importantly
science. This movie was released on July 11th, 1997 by producers Robert Zemeciks and Steve
Starkey. Dr.Ellie Arroway played by Jodie Foster rushes to translate a message that they think could
be coming from the Vega star system. When contact at first happens, Dr.Ellie Arroway communicates
with the constricting National Security Advisor Kitz who is played by James Woods. After this
unravels, they go in to see the possible problems with occurrence of this event. An out breaking
message is discovered in the signal, but the question is will Arroway be the only one to be able to
solve it or will there be more involved to help including theory s and arguments? Science versus
religion is one of the main topics and many topics of this movie which I can agree on as I watched this
thriller. Ellie doesn t believe in god and doesn t have a set religion and Palmer does so they clash
personalities a lot throughout Contact. I took interest in one character while watching Contact.

Persuasive Essay On Torture
The practice of torture by United States officials has become one of the most controversial elements of
military history. The debate of its use in gathering intelligence has been particularly prevalent since
the Bush administration. Most recently, a detailed and graphic scene of torture was presented in the
movie Zero Dark Thirty. Proponents for the use of torture state that it is necessary for intelligence
gathering and that ethics should be waved aside. Opponents argue that it is not becoming of American
practices and it is not a reliable source for intelligence gathering. The public debates on this issue have
forced policy makers and military officials to look at whether or not torture, particularly
waterboarding, should be legal. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It stated, With respect to waterboarding, the opinion concluded that while the technique presented a
substantial question under the statute, the authorized use of waterboarding...would not violate the
federal criminal prohibition against torture (U.S. Cong., 2009). This conclusion was primarily drawn
from the proposed idea that waterboarding is not considered to be painful and does not have a lasting
physical or psychological impact (U.S. Cong., 2009). This simulated session of drowning arguably
only causes a momentary state of distress. In fact, it is even practiced on U.S. service members in
training. These considerations certainly establish a compelling argument for the use of waterboarding
as a means to collect important information in a combat environment. There are, however, compelling
arguments against the use of any form of torture. One of the more prominent arguments is that it does
not provide officials with any actual intelligence. A former FBI interrogator, Ali Soufan, presents a
logical argument that waterboarding does not work. He explains that two terrorists, Abu Zubaydah and
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, were waterboarded 83 and 183 times respectively (Collins, 2014). It is
hard to imagine that anything beyond the first few attempts would have truly provided any form of
actionable intelligence. At this point in their torture, these two terrorists may only provide false
information that may seem important. In their eyes, this would provide the quickest

The dramatic rise of information technology has resulted in business managers requiring their
employees to not only be skilled in numeracy, reading, writing, speaking and listening but also I.C.T,
which in itself requires a certain level of numeracy, reading and writing skills in order for them to be
used in a way that meets the departmental or wider organisational goals and objectives. In a much
wider context, literacy is important in order for a country as a whole to remain competitive in an
increasing global market and to retain economic stability. It is extremely important, therefore, to
ensure that mechanisms and tools are in place to help children and adults improve their literacy skills
and that in particular children are better prepared for college and University education or their entry
into the job market. The problem of literacy skills deficiency is not just UK exclusive: it is a global
problem as the ACCI report indicates. Literacy skills have proved to be very important especially in
the modern age where businesses and world economies are driven by the use of technologies for
communication and commercial transactions across the globe. It is the responsibility of the respective
Government of each country to realise the importance of literacy; to invest adequate research funding
into how literacy can be improved in children and adults; develop possible proposals for changes to

Over Thinking Leads To Indecision In William Shakespeare s...
When one is internally struggling between two choices they can easily become lost in their choice, or
rather no choice. Over thinking can lead to indecision, being costly to one s goals. In William
Shakespeare s 1601 play, Hamlet, Hamlet s indecisiveness on wanting to revenge his father s death is
consuming his sanity. Torn between his indecision leading him to inaction and revenge is where
Hamlet breaks and his sanity becomes consumed. Revenge was a cornerstone of life during the 1600
s, a source of pride and honor. If one s family member were killed then they would kill the murderer,
no extra thought or decision to make. This is true for many, including Prince Fortinbras and Laertes.
Hamlet did not want to fall short of this honor. First learning of the most unnatural murder of his
father he was covered in rage and a need for revenge. This rage wavered but came back after Hamlet s
envie of Prince Fortinbras s quick action, he declared my thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth.
This declaration is so pivotal as we see the effects of the internal battle that Hamlet has had to deal
with, his sanity slowly fading ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After his initial encounter with the Ghost he said the spirit I have seen may be the devil. This
statement shows the start of Hamlet s conflict as he is speaking of his wavering belief of what happens
in the afterlife. Is this the devil? Is this his father? If it is, is he being truthful or just wanting revenge
for his wife and kingdom? All these questions were filling his head, causing him to halt and begin his
long journey of inaction. He felt trapped, in need of answers. Hamlet s decision to find out the truth or
lies of the Ghost led him to say O, what a rogue and peasant slave am I! He felt as if he was being
gulled by the Ghost. Eventually finding his truth, Hamlet made a decision of revenge, though not
without the cost of his

Essay on Critique of Hume s Analysis of Causality
Critique of Hume s Analysis of Causality
Hume s analyses of human apprehension and of causality were the most penetrating up to his time and
continue to have great influence. Contemporary Spanish philosopher Xavier Zubiri (1893 1983) has
examined both and identified three underlying errors: (1) the failure to recognize that there are three
stages of human intellection, and especially that the first, primordial apprehension, has quite unique
characteristics; (2) the attempt to place an excessive burden on the content of impressions while
ignoring what Zubiri terms their formality of reality ; and (3) the failure to recognize that
functionality, not causality, is the basis for most of our knowledge. Causal chains in general cannot be

This task Hume undertook in his Treatise of Human Nature, Book I. In Part IV, he is concerned to
establish a reason or explanation for our belief in the independent and continuing existence of external
things or bodies , for upon this all causal reasoning about such things must ultimately rest. As is well
known, Hume argues that such belief must either come from the senses, reason, or what he terms
imagination ; and he dismisses the first two, leaving only the last, where he attributes the belief to
coherence and constancy of impressions. (1)
For the present study, details of Hume s argument are not as important as his basic assumptions. One
of those assumptions, never explicitly stated but always lurking just beneath the surface, is that all
reasoning and understanding of the external world comes from the mind working on the content of
sensible impressions, be they pains, pleasures, colors, or sounds. The burden of inferring the existence
of things outside of the mind then must fall upon the mind and those processes available to it, because
what the senses deliver is inadequate to the task:
That our senses offer not their impressions as the images of something distinct, or independent, and
external, is evident; because they convey to us

Nevertheless, back in China, it was a lawless decade dominated by rapacious warlords. Nationalist

Chinese immigrants were eager to help, but soon American mired in the deepest economic recession

because of Chinese s self sufficiency, frugality, reliance on family connection and avoidance of

Although Global Positioning technology has existed since the mid 1970 s, some of the most
significant advancements have taken place within the last five years. In recent months, studies have
been conducted by NASA and other institutions concerning the use of advanced GPS technology in
both computer controlled flight of commercial aircraft and the establishment of no fly safety bubbles
around designated areas and buildings. In essence an aircraft s computer system would override a

To promote international cooperation in using GPS for peaceful purposes.
To advance U.S. scientific and technical capabilities. (Rand McNally).
During the first years of the GPS development the general public could access the satellites, but could
only realize positioning precision to about 350 feet of actual position. This was due to a Selective
Availability policy that was put in place by the U.S. government to insure that the military would have
superior navigational capabilities to the public. This changed however in May, 2000 when the
government decided that these limitations were no longer necessary. Today it is possible, with the
proper equipment, for anyone in the world to determine his or her precise location to within about 60
feet. All though the information is classified, it is rumored that today, using the most sophisticated
GPS technology, the military can achieve precision within 1 foot of actual position.
The current Global Positioning System is a group of satellites, known as a constellation, which
continually broadcast both their exact locations in space and the exact time. By tracking the signals
from at least four of these satellites, a GPS receiver on earth can determine its current latitude,
longitude and altitude. Some GPS receivers can also report the current time, direction of travel and the
rate of distance traveled. This is all possible because both the GPS receiver and the Satellite count

The Evolutionary Benefits Of Eukaryotic Cells
The evolutionary benefit of a membrane bound nucleus is that it allows for additional level of
regulating gene expression. Eukaryotic cells can effectively control the rate of mRNA transport out of
the nucleus for translation in the cytoplasm because membranes act as a barrier. Prokaryotes which
only has a single membrane can only control the rate which DNA is transcribed by regulating
activation of proteins needed for transcription/translation while eukaryotic cells can regulate gene
expression in multiple and complex ways due to the compartmentalization of the nucleus with a
membrane.
The outermost membrane is connected to the endoplasmic reticulum resulting for the two organelles
to effectively share the same membrane. This makes it accessible

Imagine seeing more and more comrades dying while flying combat missions, being caught up in the
middle of a corrupt business takeover, not being able to get discharged from combat due to
paradoxical logic, and constantly having to evade a comrade s rage induced whore who s out to

dramatic novel written by Joseph Heller. Published in 1961, the story is set in the middle of World War
II and revolves around Captain John Yossarian and his fellow soldiers, commanders, and a priest. The

For example, Dickstein s article points out a multitude of ways in which the American people refused
participation in the war (the Vietnamese War) and linked it to Yossarian s actions throughout the book,
By the late sixties, seeing through everything became the most convincing way of looking at the
world. This morality of refusal motivated protesters, draft resisters, and deserters alike. (Dickstein)
Dickstein s article also goes on to talk about the impact of Catch 22 on American s psyche; with the
wide spread popularity of the book people saw the darkness of the war. Death and madness were part
of the mental climate as the fifties turned into the sixties...With such outrageous twists, Heller s book
hit home in a new way. (Dickstein) Also, Dickstein even goes to the extent of comparing Ronald
Reagan s message, when he was trying to ease the tension from the Vietnam War, of self seeking was
the American way as being the personification of Yossarian. Thusly, it is through these comparisons
and attitudes that Catch 22 became the basis for American s animosity towards war which

disadvantages of the company undergoing a spinoff. While the concept of getting smaller or breaking

1. Equity holders benefit from the emerging profitable operations of Marriott (MII)
2. Both companies are able to generate additional equity funds

a fetus can feel pain inside the womb as it lacks the developed nervous system to feel anything. Basic
reflexes are available to be seen but where this pain comes in has no scientific evidence, and to base
an entire law over the concept of pain and morality rather than actual irrefutable evidence is a stance
best kept in ancient times that lacked modern science.
This moral connection to human life and innocence of children can be seen further connected in Texas

An Arundel Tomb by Philip Larkin literary criticism
An Arundel Tomb is about a Tomb. The people this statue represents are Richard and Eleanor
FitzAlan. The poem is about love, and how it hasn t always meant the same thing and what it meant to
the couple, the people then, and the people now. It was also about death. It was written in 1956 but not
published until 1964 in Philip Larkin s The Whitsun weddings . The author uses slant rhymes Puns
and to prove his point. The poem is about what a man sees when he looks at a sculpture. What it
meant to him and what it meant to the couple. The speaker thinks the statues show love, then He starts
to question if the statue even shows love. There is a slant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Larkin said this of his own work Love isn t stronger than death just because statues hold hands for 600
years. We see with his other drafts of this poem he wanted us to think it is not true with the qualifying
he put there. He wrote Love isn t stronger than death just because statues hold hands for 600 years. On
his draft. IN a way much of what the speaker says is actually true. The holding of hnds is new before
1840 they were not even together they were separate.
The poem is also about death. It was the last poem in the book the whitsun weddings Which has
meaning in itself it was the poem the book ended in or died. Maybe it was put at the end because it
was not his favorite one might say? Well he had this poem spoken at his funeral. So the placement and
his own life shows that this poem was about death. These people s culture Any way we decide to
perceive this art work is what will be remembered. This also shows that the book the whitsun
weddings should be read in the order the author puts the poem in. Why did the poet put the poem in
that specificate place in the book? It is about how love will servive death or what we perceive as love.
The poem is about a man questioning love or questioning what will survive

Horses of the Wild West and the World Essay
Domestication of the horse took place 5 6,000 years ago, near the end of the Neolithic period. It is
almost certain that it first took place in Eurasia, through the nomadic Aryan tribes, around the Black
and Caspian Seas. It is from this point in the history of the world that the existence of truly wild horses
begins to decline; their place taken by domestic stock. Horses are located all over the world,
depending on their location and the traits they poses; they have all since been given specific breeds.
The closest living relative to the horses of today is the Asiatic Wild Horses. These horses are better
known as the przewalskii horses, which were discovered by Nicolai Mikhailovitch Przewalskii in
1879. Within 10 years of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Between 1884 and 1911 imported stallions, as well as some mares, were introduced to the wild herds.
The horses established breeding colonies, and were rounded up regularly to be sent to the mainland.
Today, there are 2 3,000 horses on the island, divided among different stallions. The horses coat color
is mainly bay, followed by chestnut, but there are also some palominos, browns, and blacks. The
horses stand around 14 hands, and are still acknowledged for being one of the toughest breeds in the
world. The islands of Chincoteague and Assateague are inhabited by wild stock. Majority of the
ponies live on Assateague, which is now a National Park. In 1933 the islands were managed by the
Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department, who looked after the well being of the ponies. The Federal
Fish and Wildlife Service was introduced to the islands in 1943, to protect the wild fowl and seabird
populations. The needs of the ponies were not entirely compatible with the needs of the birds; and
when the FFWS fenced off its government built pools in an effort to preserve the wild fowl habitat the
ponies were greatly affected. The fencing of the pools confined the ponies to a small low lying marshy
part of the island and reduced the grazing areas substantially. The ponies were also denied access to
the sea, which is where they went to in the summer to avoid mosquitoes. Due to the

Figurative Language In The Chocolate War By Robert Cormier
In the novel The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, the characters are over exaggerated, to state a
clear point that this is not a normal story. The story does not follow a regular story line, but one that
Robert Cormier decides is fit in his mind and he over exaggerates it aswell for an effect to state his
point that, not every time you disturb the universe something good comes out.
Robert Cormier wanted the characters be different, he did not make them how others wanted, being
socially acceptable, he wrote the book how he thought it should have went in his mind, and doing so
he gave the readers some new to read not just the everyday novel. Cormier gives the reader many
examples of figurative language to express the real meaning of the story for example, Caroni watched
the chalk in Brother Leon s hands, the way the teacher pressed it, rolled it, his fingers like the legs of
spiders with a victim in their clutch. (90) In this quote Cormier gives a similar to exaggerate about
how Brother Leon was holding the chalk in his hands. It sends a powerful message to the reader that
Brother Leon is a horrible man, who had no mercy and he is seen by others as a powerful
administrator in the school using quid pro quo in his own evil type of way. Cormier also uses more
figurative language to give a specific emotion that Cormier was trying to express throughout his
novel, that not every time someone disturbs the universe something good comes out of it. What
happened with Renault was bad enough, but there was violence in the air. (209) This quote is the the
example that even though Renault did disturb the universe and did try to stop the chocolate sale, he
failed and something bad happened to him for trying. In the end Jerry s attempts to stop the chocolate
sales failed, and still there was still violence in the air meaning the enemy he tried to defeat was angry,
but still undefeated. And many readers dislike Cormiers way to end the book in a way that the hero
does not defeat the villain(s). Like Richard Peck said The young will understand the outcome. They
won t like it but they ll understand. (10) And this is exactly what Cormier had in mind when he was
writing the book, that the readers wouldn t like the ending, but

Unit 3 Assignment 1 Compare And Contrast Art Style
Foreword
So I will start with some pictures of us two. That s me on the right and Danny on the left.
The Great swirl aka The Meeting A saying, that has become my motto, I think represent my general
perspective: Hope for the best, prepare for the worst . That is what I did before the first meeting. I was
not prepared though for how similar and compatible the two of us would be. The meeting of our two
art styles was exceptional. To give a bit more background on that: during and after high school I had
several jobs, by far my favorite was the two and a half years I spent creating online content, which
involved a combination between writing, storytelling, ambient music and audio/video streaming.
Danny is made out of the same clay as I am, he has skills within the realm of painting, music,
woodworks and even photography. Our style are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now it was Danny s job to continue on and bring in the art, I continued with setting up the ambient
music and thinking what could further improve the text. We both had a hand in setting the foundation
of this house, then we both went off and built the particular bits we were best suited for. This
collaboration process did not come naturally, usually there is this instinct to reign in the project into
your direction, similar to what I heard from a lot of my colleagues that their view differed from that of
their artist and they never really collaborated. Each fighting the other for artistic control. It is not for
me to say if their collaborations failed or succeeded, what I do know is that myself and Danny both
talked about this and reached the conclusion that the only way this would work is if we did it together
and set a common goal, rather than each having different ones. We drew the plan of the house together
and started to work on it only after we had both agreed on how each room should be

Erikna Hayasaki Poverty
This Is Your Brain On Poor Response
In Erika Hayasaki s essay This Is Your Brain On Poor she talks about the effects that poverty and
depravity have on the human mind. This is often an overlooked aspect when people study poverty and
it s place in society but, it is incredibly important for helping those affected by poverty. Poverty and
social inequality is an issue that America has been dealing with for as long as we have a nation. While
some argue that poverty has no effect on the mind and mental development of those that grow up poor,
I think Hayasaki s argument that the effects of poverty are very real and detrimental to a person s mind
is much more sensible and realistic when examining the evidence brought with it.
When reading Hayasaki s writing I learned many things about ... Show more content on

Hunger Artist Essay
Considering the ways in which the movie, Brazil, reflects and deviates from A Hunger Artist and
Panopticism exposes the ways in which the Ministry s systems of surveillance and authority
manipulate and damage the human mind in order to maintain order and control of the public.
Through the pressure of surveillance, the Ministry severely limits the public s freedom and privacy in
order to maintain control of their behavior. The hunger artist allows readers to realize how a desire to
escape such pressures of surveillance can inflict damage to the human mind. Examining the hunger
artist s self destruction that results from his delusions of the importance of being in the public eye can

This is reinforced by Sam as his dreams slowly intensify from occurring only when he is asleep to
fusing with a reality to such a point that even the audience is unsure of the difference between reality
and his fantasies. At one point, Jill even remarks that Sam has no sense of reality (Gilliam, Brazil).
This comes with the consequence of Sam s self destruction, which we are able to realize is such
through the similarities it bears to the hunger artist s own self destruction. At the end of the movie,
Sam is seen in a state of blissful insanity sitting in the torture chair. It may not be clear whether this is
a result of the torture that has been inflicted upon him or of his loss of touch with reality. Either way, it
is safe to say that the reason Sam goes insane is ultimately due to his own error, whether the error is in
committing crimes or in his naivety in allowing himself to get tangled in a confusing web of reality
and fantasy. This is just as it is not the public s fault that the hunger artist grows obsessed with his
fantasy of fame and does not have it satisfied, it is not directly the Ministry s fault that Sam grows
obsessed with his own fantasies that are not satisfied in reality. The public in A Hunger Artist and the
Ministry in Brazil are the sources of their problems but ultimately the hunger artist and Sam Lowry
themselves are the only ones who have

In 1957, the Soviet Union launched the satellite Sputnik, and the space race was on. The Soviet s
triumph jarred the American people and sparked a vigorous response in the federal government to

A new space program, Project Mercury, was initiated two years later, during President Dwight D.
Eisenhower s administration. Seven men were selected to take part in the program: Scott Carpenter,
Leroy Gordon Cooper, John Glenn Jr., Virgil Grissom, Walter Schirra Jr., Alan Shepard Jr., and

most of the body of knowledge about Mars through the late 199os and early 2ooos.
Viking 1 was launched on August 2o, 1975, and the second craft, Viking 2, was launched on

After orbiting Mars for more than a month and returning images used for landing site selection, the

The incidences of diabetes are growing annually, and predicted to increase within the coming decades.
The number of cases yearly is not only increasing, but the age of onset for diabetes has decreased.
This means more individuals are developing diabetes at an earlier age. Diabetes not only affects
individuals and communities but countries as well. The prevalence of diabetes has gathered billions of
dollars in healthcare costs. [1]Type 2 diabetes also leads to other serious medical conditions such as
heart disease, renal failure, blindness, and tissue damage in extremities that will eventually lead to
amputation. These illnesses, as a result, result in further costs in the form of disability and the loss of a
portion of our workforce. However, incidences of type 2 diabetes are in higher occurrence amongst

This article addressed a study of a cognitive behavioral course to increase a sense of coherence (SOC)
and decrease perceived stress (PS). Low SOC and high PS are factors that lead to burnout and low job
satisfaction. They can also contribute to low quality of care and productivity. Therefore, it is expected
that if a nurse has high SOC and low PS, the nurse will have higher productivity and will be better at
managing stress. The study consisted of 36 nurses that had five or more years of experience and had
worked both as a bedside nurse and in an administrative role. They were divided into intervention and
control groups and all participants took surveys at the beginning of week one and the end of week 16
that included the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and the Profile of Mood States (POMS). The
intervention group participated in a cognitive behavioral (CB) interventions during three hour

improve problem solving skills. They also learned relaxation skills that included breathing techniques
and progressive muscle training. Bias was avoided by having similar socio demographic

Technology And The Social Construction Of A Younger...
Globilisation is a continually growing and increasing factor in our everyday lives. As technology
improves, the ability for people to communicate increases. The transfer of ideas, information and the
sharing of cultures becomes exceedingly simple. As technology improves the people using that
technology have access to a much wider experience of the world than previously would have been
possible. In this way as each generation grows up in a globalised world, the factors that influence their
social queues, their ability to choose peers, and what is accessible in popular culture, vastly changes
the dynamic that a younger generation would have in comparison to the generation that came before
them. Globilisation is an extremely important factor in the social construction of a younger
generations culture.
The second half of the twentieth century has been a period of massive human migration, both locally
and internationally. This period also saw a huge increase in the transfer of information and ideas
between different countries through various forms of communication, the most predominant in recent
periods being the internet. (Kaufman, 2002, 13) Migrations, and the transfers of new ideas and
information, can bring many different opportunities for the many different generations of family
members. It is common for older family members to find adjustment to a new cultures challenging,
however, younger family members can experience it more readily and in a number of different ways.

A Hint of Humor, a Dash of Cinnamon... in the Legal...
In the year 1947, legal conflict arose between Warner Brothers Studio and the Marx Brothers. It began
when the Marx Brothers released the name of one of their upcoming films, A Night in Casablanca.
When Warner Brothers claimed exclusive rights to the name Casablanca, Groucho Marx sent a letter
to Warner Brothers in response. In spite of a few ambiguities, Marx employs a brilliant and clever
combination of humor and logic to effectively refute Warner Brothers s assertion. Throughout his
letter, Marx uses his ever present wit to dissolve any actual or imagined hostility in his addressee. For
example, in one section, he says I am sure that the average movie fan could learn tin time to
distinguish between Ingrid Birdman [the female star of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marx s argument here simply makes sense. Rather than befuddling legal jargon, he shows that the idea
of owning Casablanca is absurd in the same way that owning the word brothers is absurd. His logic
pierces through any uncertainty and effectively explains his point. He later arrives at the conclusion
that this attempt to prevent us from using the title is the brainchild of some ferret faced shyster,
serving a brief apprenticeship in your legal department (Marx 2). Marx sees this inference as valid,
logical reason for Warner Brothers s interference. As such, he attempts to show the irrationality of any
hindrance to the Marx Brothers planned film title. While Groucho Marx does have a number of potent
and valid arguments, some poorly planned passages slightly diminish the overall effectiveness of his
letter. A recurring issue, Marx s tendency for rambling distracts the reader from his main goal. His
references to Burbank Studio, Old Man Burbank, and Harry Appelbaum seem to have no pertinence to
the intended subject. However, these are not major issues and can be ignored in order to find Marx s
true purpose. Even more powerful than either comedy or logic alone are instances in which both of
these elements are used together in harmony with each other. To start off his letter, Marx makes this
comment: Apparently, there is more than one way of conquering a city and holding it as your own. For
example, up to the

Inequalities In European Culture
Inequality has been an issue from the dawn of time. All throughout history we can see prime examples
of this. World war two and the german invasion, The Spanish and the Incas, and the most well known
example, today. But few people have ever asked why it s always been this way. Europe had geography
on it s side, giving them agricultural advantages, helping them to domesticate animals (and in turn,
building resistance to disease) leading to a surplus of food for specialists to invent and experiment.
Finally, that led to the decimation of other cultures, and the appropriation of their resources.
Geography affects climate which in turn controls what crops can grow in an area and if or how they
feed, power, and ultimately drive a community. Papua ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Steel was the turning point for Europe, setting their destiny in stone, and securing their chance at
world domination. Europe had this beautiful collection of resources. Their most notable was their
surplus of food and domesticated animals that gave them time. Time that was used by specialists.
Focusing on the Spanish who, thanks to their latitude, could create roaring hot fires and with a supply
of iron, their specialists could create steel. But looking at the Incas, they had the time and climate,
however, they were lacking in iron. Thus, steel was not created in the Incan empire. So with steel, the
Spanish soared ahead, creating tools, weapons, vessels for travel overseas, and the plow, which
allowed for even more time and in turn, more specialists. Because the Inca didn t have steel, they had
to rely on stone tools and their single domesticated animal, the llama. Without steel, we wouldn t be

Pinderfield Hospital Interview Report
06 01 2017: Interview as a Safety Support Worker for MidYorks Hospital.
I had an interview for a new job today at Pinderfields Hospital. The interview went really well and the
Senior Sister gave me an offer instantly. However upon realising that I could only work part time (23
hours/ week) and not a bank position, I started to wonder whether the job will be suitable for me.
Initially was really keen in getting the job because I was fed up of cleaning the wards for mediocre
results. I was even more delighted that there was an opportunity to work at Dewsbury Hospital, as I
missed volunteering there a lot. However I was upset that a bank position was not available (despite

The interview went well. This was no surprise as a lot of the questions were based on protocols and

I could improve a patient s memory (and therefore, decrease the risk of dementia). I tried to stay calm

Lovers Of Paradiso In Dante Inferno
Throughout the Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri explores the idea of passion by writing stories of two
lovers. These two lovers have similar experiences, yet, they have opposite interpretations of what they
experience. Dante suggests that individuals cause their own fates by interpreting their experiences
vastly differently. In this case, these two lovers interpret their lust/passion pretty differently, when they
were alive, and this led one couple to end up in Hell and be punished, while the other couple come
together in Heaven, at a divine level. In other words, Dante compares the lovers of Inferno and the
lovers of Paradiso. Lovers of Inferno swept up by passion, lack remorse and lack respect for the God.
In contrast, lovers of Paradiso interpret ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Looking at Inferno 5, Dante grants the agency to Francesca, allowing her to tell her own story. Giving
her the freedom to talk indicates that Dante feels sympathy for her and is curious what it feels to
punished because of lust, since he has also thought of it many time. However, on the other hand, after
Francesca is finished telling her story, Dante faints with pity. Therefore, even though he feels
sympathy towards Francesca (since Dante has similar feelings toward another woman than his wife),
he is simultaneously aware that even his sympathy might be bad. Thus, he feels so overwhelmed that
he faints with pity. Dante says to Francesca, what you suffer here melts me to tears of pity and pain.
Tear of pity and pain; pain in these words means empathy, and understanding of her, while pity refers
to the judgmental and non appropriate state of her action by Dante. Dante explicitly says that he is

The Importance Of Community Newspaper Website Managers
While anonymity, moderation, and the combination of allowing anonymity and moderating comments
did not result in additional interaction, there remain some elements to discuss. Community newspaper
website managers seem to place much more emphasis on moderation and have a negative attitude
toward anonymous comments, a finding that is not surprising based on prior research (Nielsen, 2013).
Therefore, this negative attitude toward anonymous commenting could influence who chooses to
comment and who does not, even on sites that might allow anonymity. Previous research has indicated
that some people will not comment without anonymity (Ingram, 2011; Reader, 2012b; Trytko, 2015;
Yun Park, 2011). Even if the sites allow anonymity, the negative ... Show more content on

Small towns might reduce people s willingness to comment even if anonymity is technologically
possible because some might believe their attitudes are easily identifiable (Tanis Postmes, 2007). The
more people interact the more information about themselves they provide even when anonymous
(Joinson, 2001; Tanis Postmes, 2007). While anonymity does make people feel more comfortable in
commenting (Meyer Speakman, 2016), people can at times identify others through their ideas or
language even without a name (Joinson, 2001; Tanis Postmes, 2007). Anonymity may be an idea that
finds support in numbers, and small communities simply might not possess the necessary populations
for people to feel able to hide in the background regardless of if they the comment might occur in a
community of place, virtual community or hybrid community. However, it is also important to
remember that regardless of website design or other factors, there exists only a small percentage of
readers willing to comment online (Chung Nah, 2009; Larsson, 2011).
This study supports the idea that there is no simple formula that community media websites can use to
create engagement and gain participation from the public. Moderating comments, allowing anonymity,
or the use of Facebook to post each have minor influences on the willingness of people to comment on
news stories within community newspaper websites. While

have a family, and she didn t really have a mother. Marilyn s mother is Gladys Monroe Baker. Her
mother lived in an institution for most of Marilyn s life because she had mental breakdowns. Marilyn s
biggest fear was that she would one day end up in an institution just like her mother did. Throughout
Marilyn s life she was put into twelve different foster homes. One time her foster parents were leaving
to travel to California and she didn t want to be put in another foster home so she got the idea to get

Harshness Of Life In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
On February 27, 1902, in Salinas County, California, an American Novelist named John Steinbeck
was born. He had an early appreciation for the land, in particular, California s Salinas Valley, which
would be a big impact on his writing later on. Steinbeck s life is very similar to the book he would
write, Of Mice and Men, which takes place in his hometown Salinas, and also has the same theme of
Steinbeck s life. Steinbeck experienced harshness in his life, drifting out of schools for six years until
he dropped out for good. There are many themes found in the novel Of Mice and Men by John
Steinbeck, but the most significant theme is the harshness of life, which frequently appears and
develops throughout the novel.
The harshness of life theme is shown right at the start of the book with two examples. The first
example appears on page five when Lennie tries to cover up killing a mouse to George. George sees
that Lennie is holding something and when he asks what it is, Lennie says Jus a dead mouse, George. I
didn t kill it. Honest! I found it. I found it dead (5). This proves the harshness of life because Lennie
could not control what he wanted. And in life, in order to succeed and live a good life, you are going
to have to be able to control what you want. Another example of the harshness of life occurs when
Lennie was talking about him petting the mice and how it s not under his control to stop it. He says I d
pet em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead
(10). This is a great example of the harshness of life because it shows killing. Lennie kills the fluffy
animal, but he did not want to. Steinbeck shows with these two examples that harshness of life doesn t
have to include only human beings, it also can be animals.
The reason why George and Lennie travel together is in fact because of the harshness of life. When
George is talking to Slim about Lennie and how they are together now, he says, I turns to Lennie and
says, Jump in. An he jumps. Couldn t swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him
(40). George was being a jerk to Lennie and ended up having to save his life. This is a big harshness
of life because George was a jerk to

What s Going On by Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye, a sex music icon, was a symbol of the social and political issues during his time.
Though his music he represented young culture, racial injustice, peaceful protest and his black
identity. Produced with Motown Records, his album What s Going On made it to the top ten on
Rolling Stone s 500 Greatest Albums, (Dyson). Motown Records is known for its crossover music and
artists that sang about things that would not create controversy in the political world, however their
artists began to address social issues following the release of Marvin Gaye s What s Going On.
Though Gaye s message was not direct until the release of this album, he represented a rage against
the black stereotype and political issues associated with his black identity at a much larger scale being
one of Motown Record s most successful artist. At an early age, Marvin Gaye sang in Church Choir
and was influenced to explore salvation through his reverend father. He grew up on the belief that
salvation was through God and his later music reflects that same belief through spreading love
(Cross). Gaye s career revolves around the perceived view of him as a sex symbol. With songs like

For a firm, such as Microsoft, its revenue would come from products such as the computers, phones,
tablets, and software it sells to consumers. On the other hand, for a consulting firm, such as Accenture,
revenues would stem from the fees it charges for its consulting services contracts with various
government agencies around the world. Both companies are providing a product to a consumer, one
simply happens to be a tangible product that people buy, while the other is a service product that
agencies need for their functionality. Expenses are the costs a firm incurs while generating its
revenues (Parrino, 2011). For Microsoft, expenses would stem from the costs of building its products,
marketing them, developing new products, shipping them around the world, etc. For Accenture,
expenses would stem from the cost of all of its consultants, which includes their wages, insurance,
company laptops it provides to each of them, travel costs for sending consultants around the world on
projects, etc. Again both types of firms exhibit expenses; some of them are just different. Net income
shows the company s revenue relative to its expenses. If revenues exceeds expenses then the company
has a net profit and is in the black for that time period (Parrino, 2011). On the other hand, if expenses
exceed revenues then the company has a net loss and is in the red for that time period (Parrino, 2011).

The Snake Goddess
The Snake Goddess
The Snake Goddess, a voluptuous, divine figure with bare breasts, and snakes in both hands, is one of
the most well known female deity s and faïence figurines in Minoan culture (Patron). The actual
representation of the Snake Goddess is unknown; however, a majority of perceptions would all agree
that the Snake Goddess is an important female deity in Minoan civilization. By analyzing the
importance of symbolism, the role of women in Minoan civilization and The Snake Goddesses role in
Minoan culture, it will become evident that The Snake Goddess plays a significant role in Minoan art,
religion and society (Witcombe).

Women acted as priestesses, made official decisions in and amongst the community, and were
responsible for organizing commune functions (Witcombe 10). These responsibilities and duties were
not often jobs of men in Minoan civilization, Moreover men are rarely seen in commanding positions,
despite attempts to identify them in such positions (Witcombe 10). It is suggested that the reason why
women played such a huge role in Minoan civilization was due to the fact that in Minoan religion they
worshiped goddesses and they were greatly influenced by them. It is believed that The Snake Goddess
was an important figure in Crete at this time, and was worshiped along side of the Huntress, and The
Mountain Mother. Mainly focusing on The Snake Goddess she represented a strong, powerful female
deity, who overall acted as an icon for women. The influence The Snake Goddess had on women was
substantial. Women became more than just members of the community, and gained a place in society.
It was no longer a man s world but a world run by women. Even ancient frescoes and other forms of
Minoan artwork provide evidence of women being more vital than men, because depictions of women
were more common than men (Witcombe 10). After examining women s key roles in Minoan
civilization it becomes apparent that The Snake Goddess influenced women in Crete in many different
ways and played a significant part in Minoan civilization.

  • 2. Lord Fogarty Essay The first poem I will be discussing is Fellow Being by Lionel Fogarty. Sound techniques such as consonance are used in this poem to invite the reader to understand how Australia can function as an unwelcoming home to the Indigenous Australians. Fogarty writes in the poem that The kissing of winds to trees are the love between aborigines . Through the repetition of the soft drawn out s sound in the words kissing and trees , the quality of the sound portrays a sense of love and safety. Furthermore, the word kissing , with its connotations of affection and love, and trees with its inferences of freedom and life emphasises the connection indigenous Australians had with the old Australia. The reminiscent style of the poem reveals the inhospitable nature of modern Australia towards Aborigines. Fogarty also uses image techniques such as metaphors to describe the interdependent nature of the relationship the indigenous Australians had with the land. By emphasizing this important relationship, Fogarty reveals the fractured bond that the white Australians forced upon the Aborigines. The phrase aboriginal is the bread equates the indigenous ... There are six primary strategies used in campaign propaganda: stacking the deck; testimonials/endorsements; plain folks; negative ads; glittering generalities; and guilt by association/coat tailing. A campaign is measured by its effectiveness, whether it is informative, and if it is ethical. An effective campaign wins votes; an informative campaign gets the message out to the voters; and an ethical campaign respects the opponent and is truthful (Campaign Propaganda Mini Q). Bush used negative ads to influence voters into believing Dukakis, if elected, would make the country weak in defense based on his voting patterns. Bush wanted voters to mistrust Dukakis so he could win the election. Dukakis failed to effectively counter Bush s negative attacks. Consequently, the negative ad strategy worked in his favor, as Bush became the 41st President of the United States. However, using the measuring sticks as a gauge, the strategy was not ethical as it was not completely honest and was disrespectful. Similarly, during the 1992 presidential election, Bill Clinton used the same strategy to defeat his opponent, the incumbent George H.W. Bush (Document D). Clinton used ads that sent a message that Bush could not be trusted because he promised no new taxes, but then raised taxes. Using the measuring sticks, this strategy was effective as Clinton was elected over Bush; however, Clinton was not completely honest and was disrespectful to his opponent. Negative Regulation Of Sheepmeat Odour And Biogen ( SEPW1 ) For the SNP g.53617063 G A mutation in the present study, quantitative realtime polymerase chain reaction (qRT PCR) analysis revealed that individuals with AA genotype expressed lower mRNA levels than those with AG and GG genotype. But it requires further investigation to determine whether this difference is also associated with mRNA stability. It is widely accepted that SEPW1 is a negative regulator of sheepmeat odour and flavour, and decreased SEPW1 mRNA expression levels could cause lower odour and flavour. From these results, we can postulate that the SEPW1 gene is negatively associated with odour and flavour, or that the sepw1 gene may affect fatty acid (FA) metabolism and f the triglyceride (Kubiak et al 2016). Proponents for the use of torture state that it is necessary for intelligence gathering and that ethics should be waved aside. It stated, With respect to waterboarding, the opinion concluded that while the technique presented a substantial question under the statute, the authorized use of waterboarding...would not violate the federal criminal prohibition against torture (U.S. Cong., 2009). This conclusion was primarily drawn from the proposed idea that waterboarding is not considered to be painful and does not have a lasting physical or psychological impact (U.S. Cong., 2009). This simulated session of drowning arguably only causes a momentary state of distress. In fact, it is even practiced on U.S. service members in training. These considerations certainly establish a compelling argument for the use of waterboarding as a means to collect important information in a combat environment. There are, however, compelling arguments against the use of any form of torture. One of the more prominent arguments is that it does not provide officials with any actual intelligence. A former FBI interrogator, Ali Soufan, presents a logical argument that waterboarding does not work. He explains that two terrorists, Abu Zubaydah and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, were waterboarded 83 and 183 times respectively (Collins, 2014). Over thinking can lead to indecision, being costly to one s goals. In William Shakespeare s 1601 play, Hamlet, Hamlet s indecisiveness on wanting to revenge his father s death is consuming his sanity. Torn between his indecision leading him to inaction and revenge is where Hamlet breaks and his sanity becomes consumed. Revenge was a cornerstone of life during the 1600 s, a source of pride and honor. If one s family member were killed then they would kill the murderer, no extra thought or decision to make. This is true for many, including Prince Fortinbras and Laertes. Hamlet did not want to fall short of this honor. First learning of the most unnatural murder of his father he was covered in rage and a need for revenge. Contemporary Spanish philosopher Xavier Zubiri (1893 1983) has examined both and identified three underlying errors: (1) the failure to recognize that there are three stages of human intellection, and especially that the first, primordial apprehension, has quite unique characteristics; (2) the attempt to place an excessive burden on the content of impressions while ignoring what Zubiri terms their formality of reality ; and (3) the failure to recognize that functionality, not causality, is the basis for most of our knowledge. In Part IV, he is concerned to establish a reason or explanation for our belief in the independent and continuing existence of external things or bodies , for upon this all causal reasoning about such things must ultimately rest. As is well known, Hume argues that such belief must either come from the senses, reason, or what he terms imagination ; and he dismisses the first two, leaving only the last, where he attributes the belief to coherence and constancy of impressions. (1) For the present study, details of Hume s argument are not as important as his basic assumptions. One of those assumptions, never explicitly stated but always lurking just beneath the surface, is that all reasoning and understanding of the external world comes from the mind working on the content of sensible impressions, be they pains, pleasures, colors, or sounds. The burden of inferring the existence of things outside of the mind then must fall upon the mind and those processes available to it, because what the senses deliver is inadequate to the task: That our senses offer not their impressions as the images of something distinct, or independent, and external, is evident; because they convey to us ... This changed however in May, 2000 when the government decided that these limitations were no longer necessary. Today it is possible, with the proper equipment, for anyone in the world to determine his or her precise location to within about 60 feet. • 23. Horses of the Wild West and the World Essay Domestication of the horse took place 5 6,000 years ago, near the end of the Neolithic period. It is almost certain that it first took place in Eurasia, through the nomadic Aryan tribes, around the Black and Caspian Seas. It is from this point in the history of the world that the existence of truly wild horses begins to decline; their place taken by domestic stock. Horses are located all over the world, depending on their location and the traits they poses; they have all since been given specific breeds. The closest living relative to the horses of today is the Asiatic Wild Horses. These horses are better known as the przewalskii horses, which were discovered by Nicolai Mikhailovitch Przewalskii in 1879. Within 10 years of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The horses stand around 14 hands, and are still acknowledged for being one of the toughest breeds in the world. The islands of Chincoteague and Assateague are inhabited by wild stock. Majority of the ponies live on Assateague, which is now a National Park. In 1933 the islands were managed by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department, who looked after the well being of the ponies. The Federal Fish and Wildlife Service was introduced to the islands in 1943, to protect the wild fowl and seabird populations. The needs of the ponies were not entirely compatible with the needs of the birds; and when the FFWS fenced off its government built pools in an effort to preserve the wild fowl habitat the ponies were greatly affected. The fencing of the pools confined the ponies to a small low lying marshy part of the island and reduced the grazing areas substantially. The ponies were also denied access to the sea, which is where they went to in the summer to avoid mosquitoes. Due to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. Figurative Language In The Chocolate War By Robert Cormier In the novel The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, the characters are over exaggerated, to state a clear point that this is not a normal story. The story does not follow a regular story line, but one that Robert Cormier decides is fit in his mind and he over exaggerates it aswell for an effect to state his point that, not every time you disturb the universe something good comes out. Robert Cormier wanted the characters be different, he did not make them how others wanted, being socially acceptable, he wrote the book how he thought it should have went in his mind, and doing so he gave the readers some new to read not just the everyday novel. Cormier gives the reader many examples of figurative language to express the real meaning of the story for example, Caroni watched the chalk in Brother Leon s hands, the way the teacher pressed it, rolled it, his fingers like the legs of spiders with a victim in their clutch. (90) In this quote Cormier gives a similar to exaggerate about how Brother Leon was holding the chalk in his hands. It sends a powerful message to the reader that Brother Leon is a horrible man, who had no mercy and he is seen by others as a powerful administrator in the school using quid pro quo in his own evil type of way. Cormier also uses more figurative language to give a specific emotion that Cormier was trying to express throughout his novel, that not every time someone disturbs the universe something good comes out of it. What happened with Renault was bad enough, but there was violence in the air. (209) This quote is the the example that even though Renault did disturb the universe and did try to stop the chocolate sale, he failed and something bad happened to him for trying. In the end Jerry s attempts to stop the chocolate sales failed, and still there was still violence in the air meaning the enemy he tried to defeat was angry, but still undefeated. And many readers dislike Cormiers way to end the book in a way that the hero does not defeat the villain(s). Like Richard Peck said The young will understand the outcome. They won t like it but they ll understand. (10) And this is exactly what Cormier had in mind when he was writing the book, that the readers wouldn t like the ending, but ... The Great swirl aka The Meeting A saying, that has become my motto, I think represent my general perspective: Hope for the best, prepare for the worst . That is what I did before the first meeting. I was not prepared though for how similar and compatible the two of us would be. The meeting of our two art styles was exceptional. To give a bit more background on that: during and after high school I had several jobs, by far my favorite was the two and a half years I spent creating online content, which involved a combination between writing, storytelling, ambient music and audio/video streaming. This collaboration process did not come naturally, usually there is this instinct to reign in the project into your direction, similar to what I heard from a lot of my colleagues that their view differed from that of their artist and they never really collaborated. Each fighting the other for artistic control. It is not for me to say if their collaborations failed or succeeded, what I do know is that myself and Danny both talked about this and reached the conclusion that the only way this would work is if we did it together and set a common goal, rather than each having different ones. Poverty and social inequality is an issue that America has been dealing with for as long as we have a nation. While some argue that poverty has no effect on the mind and mental development of those that grow up poor, I think Hayasaki s argument that the effects of poverty are very real and detrimental to a person s mind is much more sensible and realistic when examining the evidence brought with it. This comes with the consequence of Sam s self destruction, which we are able to realize is such through the similarities it bears to the hunger artist s own self destruction. At the end of the movie, Sam is seen in a state of blissful insanity sitting in the torture chair. It may not be clear whether this is a result of the torture that has been inflicted upon him or of his loss of touch with reality. Either way, it is safe to say that the reason Sam goes insane is ultimately due to his own error, whether the error is in committing crimes or in his naivety in allowing himself to get tangled in a confusing web of reality and fantasy. As technology improves, the ability for people to communicate increases. The transfer of ideas, information and the sharing of cultures becomes exceedingly simple. As technology improves the people using that technology have access to a much wider experience of the world than previously would have been possible. In this way as each generation grows up in a globalised world, the factors that influence their social queues, their ability to choose peers, and what is accessible in popular culture, vastly changes the dynamic that a younger generation would have in comparison to the generation that came before them. Globilisation is an extremely important factor in the social construction of a younger generations culture. The second half of the twentieth century has been a period of massive human migration, both locally and internationally. This period also saw a huge increase in the transfer of information and ideas between different countries through various forms of communication, the most predominant in recent periods being the internet. It began when the Marx Brothers released the name of one of their upcoming films, A Night in Casablanca. When Warner Brothers claimed exclusive rights to the name Casablanca, Groucho Marx sent a letter to Warner Brothers in response. In spite of a few ambiguities, Marx employs a brilliant and clever combination of humor and logic to effectively refute Warner Brothers s assertion. Marx s argument here simply makes sense. Rather than befuddling legal jargon, he shows that the idea of owning Casablanca is absurd in the same way that owning the word brothers is absurd. His logic pierces through any uncertainty and effectively explains his point. He later arrives at the conclusion that this attempt to prevent us from using the title is the brainchild of some ferret faced shyster, serving a brief apprenticeship in your legal department (Marx 2). Marx sees this inference as valid, logical reason for Warner Brothers s interference. As such, he attempts to show the irrationality of any hindrance to the Marx Brothers planned film title. While Groucho Marx does have a number of potent and valid arguments, some poorly planned passages slightly diminish the overall effectiveness of his letter. A recurring issue, Marx s tendency for rambling distracts the reader from his main goal. His references to Burbank Studio, Old Man Burbank, and Harry Appelbaum seem to have no pertinence to the intended subject. However, these are not major issues and can be ignored in order to find Marx s true purpose. Even more powerful than either comedy or logic alone are instances in which both of these elements are used together in harmony with each other. To start off his letter, Marx makes this comment: Apparently, there is more than one way of conquering a city and holding it as your own. For example, up to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

World war two and the german invasion, The Spanish and the Incas, and the most well known example, today. But few people have ever asked why it s always been this way. Europe had geography on it s side, giving them agricultural advantages, helping them to domesticate animals (and in turn, building resistance to disease) leading to a surplus of food for specialists to invent and experiment. These two lovers have similar experiences, yet, they have opposite interpretations of what they experience. Dante suggests that individuals cause their own fates by interpreting their experiences vastly differently. In this case, these two lovers interpret their lust/passion pretty differently, when they were alive, and this led one couple to end up in Hell and be punished, while the other couple come together in Heaven, at a divine level. In other words, Dante compares the lovers of Inferno and the lovers of Paradiso. Lovers of Inferno swept up by passion, lack remorse and lack respect for the God. Giving her the freedom to talk indicates that Dante feels sympathy for her and is curious what it feels to punished because of lust, since he has also thought of it many time. However, on the other hand, after Francesca is finished telling her story, Dante faints with pity. Therefore, even though he feels sympathy towards Francesca (since Dante has similar feelings toward another woman than his wife), he is simultaneously aware that even his sympathy might be bad. Thus, he feels so overwhelmed that he faints with pity. Dante says to Francesca, what you suffer here melts me to tears of pity and pain. Tear of pity and pain; pain in these words means empathy, and understanding of her, while pity refers to the judgmental and non appropriate state of her action by Dante. Dante explicitly says that he is overwhelmed by her confession and pride of her action that he faints. Moreover, Francesca and Paolo committed the sin of adultery and inferno 5 has 147 lines. Yet, the word adultery never appear in none of these lines. • 41. Harshness Of Life In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men On February 27, 1902, in Salinas County, California, an American Novelist named John Steinbeck was born. He had an early appreciation for the land, in particular, California s Salinas Valley, which would be a big impact on his writing later on. Steinbeck s life is very similar to the book he would write, Of Mice and Men, which takes place in his hometown Salinas, and also has the same theme of Steinbeck s life. Steinbeck experienced harshness in his life, drifting out of schools for six years until he dropped out for good. There are many themes found in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, but the most significant theme is the harshness of life, which frequently appears and develops throughout the novel. The harshness of life theme is shown right at the start of the book with two examples. The first example appears on page five when Lennie tries to cover up killing a mouse to George. George sees that Lennie is holding something and when he asks what it is, Lennie says Jus a dead mouse, George. I didn t kill it. Honest! I found it. I found it dead (5). This proves the harshness of life because Lennie could not control what he wanted. And in life, in order to succeed and live a good life, you are going to have to be able to control what you want. Another example of the harshness of life occurs when Lennie was talking about him petting the mice and how it s not under his control to stop it. He says I d pet em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead (10). This is a great example of the harshness of life because it shows killing. Lennie kills the fluffy animal, but he did not want to. Steinbeck shows with these two examples that harshness of life doesn t have to include only human beings, it also can be animals. The reason why George and Lennie travel together is in fact because of the harshness of life. When George is talking to Slim about Lennie and how they are together now, he says, I turns to Lennie and says, Jump in. An he jumps. Couldn t swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him (40). George was being a jerk to Lennie and ended up having to save his life. This is a big harshness of life because George was a jerk to ... For a firm, such as Microsoft, its revenue would come from products such as the computers, phones, tablets, and software it sells to consumers. On the other hand, for a consulting firm, such as Accenture, revenues would stem from the fees it charges for its consulting services contracts with various government agencies around the world. Both companies are providing a product to a consumer, one simply happens to be a tangible product that people buy, while the other is a service product that agencies need for their functionality. Expenses are the costs a firm incurs while generating its revenues (Parrino, 2011). For Microsoft, expenses would stem from the costs of building its products, marketing them, developing new products, shipping them around the world, etc. For Accenture, expenses would stem from the cost of all of its consultants, which includes their wages, insurance, company laptops it provides to each of them, travel costs for sending consultants around the world on projects, etc. Again both types of firms exhibit expenses; some of them are just different. Net income shows the company s revenue relative to its expenses. If revenues exceeds expenses then the company has a net profit and is in the black for that time period (Parrino, 2011). Women acted as priestesses, made official decisions in and amongst the community, and were responsible for organizing commune functions (Witcombe 10). These responsibilities and duties were not often jobs of men in Minoan civilization, Moreover men are rarely seen in commanding positions, despite attempts to identify them in such positions (Witcombe 10). It is suggested that the reason why women played such a huge role in Minoan civilization was due to the fact that in Minoan religion they worshiped goddesses and they were greatly influenced by them. It is believed that The Snake Goddess was an important figure in Crete at this time, and was worshiped along side of the Huntress, and The Mountain Mother. Mainly focusing on The Snake Goddess she represented a strong, powerful female deity, who overall acted as an icon for women. The influence The Snake Goddess had on women was substantial. Women became more than just members of the community, and gained a place in society. It was no longer a man s world but a world run by women. Even ancient frescoes and other forms of Minoan artwork provide evidence of women being more vital than men, because depictions of women were more common than men (Witcombe 10).
