ANTI-CARIES AGENTS
Fluoride:
considered to be the most effective caries-inhibiting agent, and almost all toothpastes today contain fluoride in one form or the other
The most common form is sodium fluoride (NaF), but mono-fluoro-phosphate (MFP) and stannous fluoride (SnF) are also used
Fluoride is most beneficial when the mouth is not rinsed with water after tooth brushing. In this way a bigger amount of fluoride is retained in the oral cavity
How do teeth decay?
Tooth decay begins when the outer surface of the tooth is attacked by acid. The acid is produced by bacteria which live on the surfaces of the teeth as a layer called plaque. When foods or drinks containing sugars enter the mouth, the bacteria within the plaque rapidly converts the sugars into acid. The plaque can hold the acid in contact with the tooth surface for up to 2 hours before it is neutralized by saliva.
During the time that the plaque is acidic, some of the calcium and phosphate minerals, of which enamel is largely composed, are dissolved out of the enamel into the plaque. This process is called demineralisation.
Fluoride:
There are three main theories considering the positive action of fluoride in the prevention of caries:
Positive action of fluoride in the prevention of caries:
the most important anti-caries effect is claimed to be due to the formation of calcium fluoride (CaF2) in plaque and on the enamel surface during and after rinsing or brushing with fluoride.
CaF2 serves as a fluoride reservoir.
When the pH drops, fluoride and calcium are released into the plaque fluid.
Fluoride diffuses with the acid from plaque into the enamel pores and forms fluoroapatite (FAP).
FAP incorporated in the enamel surface is more resistant to a subsequent acid attack.
Mouthwashes
A mouthwash is defined as a non-sterile aqueous solution used mostly for its deodorant, refreshing or antiseptic effect.
Mouthwashes or rinses are designed to reduce oral bacteria, remove food particles, temporary reduce bad breathe and provide a pleasant taste.
Mouth rinses are generally classified as either cosmetic or therapeutic or a combination of the two.
Mouthwashes
Therapeutic rinses
often have the benefits of their cosmetic counterparts,
but also contain an added active ingredient, f. ex. fluoride or chlorhexidine, that help protect against some oral diseases.
What is a Dentifrice?
According to American Dental Association, Council on Dental Therapeutics:-
“ A dentifrices is a substance used with a toothbrush for the purpose of cleaning the accessible surface of the teeth”
“Webster” described the term Dentifrices as derived from “Dens” (tooth ) and “fricare” ( to rub ) .

Tooth whitening is the process of regaining your attractive whiter smile. The cosmetic treatment can be done either at home or at a dental clinic. However, it's better to have it done through professional dentists who can look after the associated risks and complications in the process.
Chemicals that are used as oxidizing agents in the process are hydrogen peroxide/carbamide peroxide. Teeth whitening process is usually required in adults as compared to children due to food stains, changed mineral structure with ageing, consumption of tobacco products, smoking etc.
After analyzing your teeth, dentists offer the best treatments and aftercare recommendations to ensure that the whitening effect lasts longer. Regain whiter teeth that add to your smile, beauty and personality. Get in touch with Axiss Dental experts today.

Five tips for having a positive attitude at work:
Avoid negative thinking and complaining.
Spend time with people who have a positive attitude.
Be thankful for your job.
Give yourself a chance to recharge.
Reward yourself for doing a good job.
Parabens are group of preservative ingredients used in pharmaceutical, cosmetics, personal hygiene and food products.
Parabens prevent the growth of potentially harmful microbes such as bacteria ,fungi or yeast, thereby increasing shelf-life of cosmetics.
Disinfectants prevents spread of disease.
Kills harmful bacteria and viruses.
Reduce the number of pathogens present in the environment.
Reduces risk of infection to patients and health-care personnel.
Prevent transmission of infections among patients and health care professionals.
Tips to Prevent Sensitive Teeth
• Brush your teeth with desensitizing toothpaste. Use a
soft bristled toothbrush. Brush gently with correct a
tooth brushing technique.
• Avoid frequent intake of highly acidic food or drinks
such as fruit juices, sports drinks, soft drinks, yogurt,
wine, etc., to prevent tooth erosion.
• Prevent tooth grinding by using nightguard while
sleeping. Nightguard is very effective to control teeth
grinding.
• Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing teeth twice a
day and using dental floss daily to thoroughly remove
the dental plaque in between the teeth.
In India, dental diseases are mainly
due to poor oral hygiene, lack of
knowledge on oral health, poor access
to dental care and socio-cultural
factors. Furthermore, poor oral health
among children has been related to
decreased school performance, poor
social relationships and less success
later in life due to the missed days in
school. As per the WHO reports, 486
millions of children suffer from tooth
decay of milk teeth and more than
fifty million school hours are lost
each year because of poor oral health.
Therefore, school based oral health
education programs are necessary
to create awareness among children
about oral health for a healthy smile.
A pre-procedural mouth rinse is an antimicrobial mouth rinse
used by patients before a dental procedure. Antimicrobial
agents such as chlorine dioxide, chlorhexidine, povidone iodine, hydrogen peroxide etc. are used. Pre-procedural
rinsing reduces the number of microorganisms that a
patient might release in the form of aerosols that can
contaminate the surface in the dental clinic and transmit
the disease to other health care professionals.
Introduction Dental caries is one of the major oral health problems in the world affecting infants, children and adults. There are many factors that influence dental caries. Of all these factors, diet plays an important role and within diet, sugar is the major cause of dental caries. Sugars also increase the risk of other health problems, such as obesity, diabetes, heart diseases, etc. Tips to Prevent Dental Caries in Children Develop healthy dietary habits in children by introducing healthy options early in life. Don’t add any sugars to baby’s food and drink. Limit the amount and frequency of sugar containing food and drinks. Choose healthy alternatives such as drinking milk and water instead of sugars-containing drinks. Encourage children to eat more fruits, vegetables, unsweetened breakfast cereals and grains than junk food. Avoid the consumption of long-lasting sources of sugars. These stick to teeth and cause tooth decay.
Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling the aerosol produced by an electronic cigarette. Electronic cigarette is a battery operated device that emits doses of nicotine or non nicotine solutions. It was introduced in the market as an alternative approach for quitting smoking. They have been marketed as a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarettes. They come in many different shapes and sizes. Some e-cigarettes look like regular cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. Some look like USB flash drives, and pens. They are also called e-cigs e-hookahs, mods, vape pens, vapes, tank systems, and electronic nicotine delivery systems. The effects of E-cigarette on the oral health can vary depending on the type, frequency and individual response. Nicotine products have been associated with increasing risk of developing gum disease which can result in tooth loss. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, which constricts the blood vessels and reduces the amount of nutrient and oxygenated blood flow to the gums as well as immune cells responsible for attacking infections or foreign bodies. It affects cytokine production, neutrophil function, and other immune cell function. In addition, nicotine decreases connective tissue turnover. All of this results in a much higher chance of developing gum disease and tooth loss.Nicotine can have a muscle stimulant effect in many people, exacerbating clenching and grinding and the dental problems they can lead to. The high heat of vapour as it enters the mouth and chemical properties of nicotine can frequently both cause xerostomia and tooth sensitivity. More severe exposure can lead to nicotine stomatitis, a reddened, irritated thickening of the skin tissue in the mouth. E-cigarettes also contain toxic chemicals which have been linked to cancer, as well as respiratory and heart disease. E-Cigarette can affect oral and overall health.
Poor denture hygiene can cause poor aesthetics,
malodor and deleterious effects on oral mucosa. Loose
dentures cause discomfort, difficulty in chewing, altered
speech and accumulation of food under the denture to the
patient. To overcome these issues, dentists should educate
their patients regarding denture hygiene to prevent undesirable
circumstances and advise use of denture adhesives to improve
retention, stability and enhance comfort to patients.
Dentists recommend mechanical, chemical and a combination
of mechanical and chemical methods to maintain good denture
hygiene. Mechanical method by using soft denture brush and
chemical method by immersion in denture cleansing solution.
The combination of mechanical and chemical method is the
most effective method of cleaning dentures.
Regular dental visits are required to
ensure that there are no potential problems and dentures
are fitting and functioning properly. Proper denture care and
regular dental check up prevents plaque buildup, maintain
aesthetics, increases life span of dentures and reduces the
risk of other oral health problems.
Preventive Strategies of White Spot LesionsKamala DN
White spot lesions usually develop around orthodontic brackets and bands due to poor oral hygiene. These lesions are preventable
by educating and motivating the patient to practice good oral
hygiene, oral prophylaxis and advising fluoride containing
products during fixed orthodontic therapy. Amflor toothpaste and mouthwash is used to prevent white spots and cavities during fixed orthodontic .
Oral health is very important for general health of pregnant
women and fetal health.Common oral health problems seen in pregnancy are
pregnancy gingivitis, benign oral lesions, periodontitis, tooth erosion and dental caries. The ideal time for dental treatment in pregnancy is the second trimester i.e. after the completion of the organogenesis period. It is better to avoid radiography and elective
surgery. Drug therapies should be limited. Scaling and root
planing is considered safe during pregnancy and improves
both maternal and neonatal health.
Oral ulceration is one of the most common complaints of the oral mucosa membrane that affect around 20% of the general population. They cause pain or discomfort in the mouth, especially when eating, drinking or brushing the teeth and also the pain is aggravated by intake of spicy foods and acidic drinks. Most Apthous ulcers heal naturally within one or two weeks but symptomatic treatment may be recommended for major, persistent, painful ulcers to alleviate pain and reduce healing time. Drugs such as corticosteroid, anesthetic, analgesic, antimicrobial agents and antihistamine are used. Nutritional supplements are also recommended. Apthous ulcers can be prevented by maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding foods that irritate mouth, as well as acidic or spicy foods. Analgesics and antiseptic gels are used for symptomatic relief.

My article, Bioactive Glass -A Revolutionary Desensitizer published in Student Digest ,Dec 2017,an official IDA publication. Bioactive glasses, calcium sodium phosphosilicate and Fluoro Calcium phosphosilicate are used in toothpaste to remineralize and relieve dentin sensitivity. Research studies have shown that bioactive glass based toothpaste like Elsenz, SHY NM toothpaste offers long lasting relief from sensitivity and highly resistant to acid challenge.
Chlorine Dioxide - A Safe and effective antimicrobial.Kamala DN
My article published in student Digest-Jan 2018, an official publication of IDA .
Chlorine dioxide is a safe antimicrobial mouthwash for daily use. It is used to maintain good oral hygiene, gingivitis, pre and post-surgery and very effective in halitosis. Chlorine dioxide is approved by USFDA as an antimicrobial agent . Unlike chlorhexidine, it is free from staining and doesn't impair taste. Chlorine dioxide mouthwash is available as Freshclor in India, manufactured by Group Pharmaceuticals Limited.

Feeding plate for a newborn with Cleft Palate.pptxSatvikaPrasad
A feeding plate is a prosthetic device used for newborns with a cleft palate to assist in feeding and improve nutrition intake. From a prosthodontic perspective, this plate acts as a barrier between the oral and nasal cavities, facilitating effective sucking and swallowing by providing a more normal anatomical structure. It helps to prevent milk from entering the nasal passage, thereby reducing the risk of aspiration and enhancing the infant's ability to feed efficiently. The feeding plate also aids in the development of the oral muscles and can contribute to better growth and weight gain. Its custom fabrication and proper fitting by a prosthodontist are crucial for ensuring comfort and functionality, as well as for minimizing potential complications. Early intervention with a feeding plate can significantly improve the quality of life for both the infant and the parents.
