How Designers Can Make the World a Happier PlaceCentralis

From the big decisions about a product’s purpose all the way down to the myriad pixel-level arguments lost and won, designers have a great responsibility to safeguard the happiness of the users we serve. But what do we really know about the nature of happiness? And how can we actually make everyone happy?
In this talk, Kathi Kaiser (Co-Founder & COO, Centralis) deconstructs the concept of “happiness” and offer designers a framework for considering the emotional impact of their work. She explores the meaning, dimensions, and pre-conditions of happiness while examining the wide range of satisfying outcomes and their implications for design. Drawing on recent research in psychology as well as real-world design examples, you’ll learn when and how to evoke joy, humor, reassurance, comfort, and other positive feelings through applying a set of guiding principles for the pursuit of happiness.

Having friends at work is incredibly important for employee engagement and happiness. Employees that report having close friends at work are more productive, happier, receive more praise, and are less likely to look for other jobs. According to research, employees that have good relationships with their coworkers are even willing to forego a salary increase to stay with their friends.
Not having friends at work can lead to feelings of loneliness and can make an employee disengaged.
This presentation dives deep into the research behind why having friends at work is so important.

Learn to create resilience and happiness no matter what’s going on in your life
In these tough times, there are few people who are completely happy with the current conditions. From business executives to the everyday Joe or Jane, everyone seems to be going through a rough economic and personal crunch. But acclaimed business school Professor Srikumar Rao says that we can learn to create joy no matter what else may be going on around us.
Rao shows you that it isn't the negative thing that happens to you that causes your unhappiness, it's how you see it. Happiness at Work is a thought-provoking new title that moves the mind away from negativity and forces you to resist labeling situations as "bad", but rather seeing them as neutral.

Applying Emotional Intelligence to TestingTechWell
As test managers and test professionals we can have an enormous emotional impact on others. We're constantly dealing with fragile egos, highly charged situations, and pressured people playing a high-stakes game under conditions of massive uncertainty. We're often the bearers of bad news and are sometimes perceived as critics, activating people's primal fear of being judged. Emotional intelligence (EI), the concept popularized by Harvard psychologist and science writer Daniel Goleman, has much to offer test managers and testers. Key EI skills include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Explore the concept of EI, assess your own levels of EI, and look at ways in which EI can help. Thomas McCoy discusses how EI can be useful in dealing with anger management, controlling negative thoughts, processing constructive criticism, and dealing with conflict—all within the context of the testing profession. This lively session is grounded in real-life examples, giving you concrete ideas to take back to work.
Do you know what you are saying? Before you speak a single word, you have said so much. Your body language, facial expressions, and attitude tell their own story. A strong leader knows how to say what she means. Her voice is strong; her points are clear, and she talks about the big picture. She invests in increasing her vocabulary and uses language that reflects core values, missions, and goals. She can take these skills straight to the bank as she rises to the top.
At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:
a. Identify top communication techniques that support clarity and purpose.
b. Explore ways to articulate mission and values.
c. Practice effective listening skills.
d. Identify individual listening and communication styles.
e. Examine personal communication challenges and ways to address them.
