To What Extent Was Slavery the Cause of the American Civil...
In the context of the period 1763–1865, how far was the American Civil War caused by long term
divisions over the issue of slavery?
In his second inaugural address in March 1865, Abraham Lincoln looked back at the beginning of
the Civil War four years earlier "all knew," he said, that slavery "was somehow the cause of the
war." This essay will endeavour to discuss the role of long term divisions caused by the slavery
debate in the eventual outbreak of the Civil War. In doing so this analysis will encompass the period
between the birth of the nation beginning with the start of the American Revolution in 1763 and the
conclusion of the Civil War in 1865. This being a period in which the newly independent nation
struggled with its state ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are antagonistic principles and cannot exist long together – one or the other must fall." 'Slave
power' heightened through media influences such as the non–abolitionist Cincinnati Daily
Commercial claiming "There is such a thing as THE SLAVE POWER" encouraged the Northern
populace that action needed to be taken against the South in order to preserve the existence of their
personal liberty.
On the other hand, many Southerners like historian Ulrich Bonner Phillips, viewed slavery as a
hierarchic order thus making it wholesome practice. Phillips recalls setting off to school as a young
child and burdened by the prospect that his "sable companion" was able to play all day long.
According to Hugh Tulloch, the Southerners had evolved a unique form of social relations based on
slavery; whereby the master's role was essentially paternal, "without slavery the black would either
lapse into African savagery." It is this view and that of Edward Channing's, "the slaves were often
happier than their masters" that appears so distorted in comparison to the Northern interpretation on
slavery. It was this that became an important factor in consolidating antislavery sentiment in the
North, thus widening the sectional rift between the North and South. "If slavery is not wrong,

The Narrative Of Frederick Douglas's Life
Frederick Douglass, originally Frederick Bailey, was born into slavery in or around 1818 in Talbot
County, Maryland, though Douglass himself was never sure of his exact date of birth. While his
mother came from Native American descent, his father came from African and European descent.
Until the age of six where he was sent to live and work on the Wye House Plantation, Douglass
lived with his maternal grandmother, after his mother left him. Initially, Douglass was given to
Lucretia Auld, but then Thomas Auld, her husband, sent him to Baltimore with his brother, Hugh. At
Baltimore, Hugh's wife taught Douglass how to read and write. Soon, he taught himself more and
began teaching other slaves. As a result, Douglass was sent to Edward Covey who

Essay On Frederick Douglass Individualism
Frederick Douglass, character was formed by the impecunious of slavery. He demonstrated many
transcendentalisms through his philosophical, literary, and influential activisms.
Like other Transcendentalist Douglass believed in self–development and self–reliance in which he
unveils significantly in the values of this philosophy. He believed in self–education and desired to
share his views with the world, to which he traveled in the same lecture path as Theodore Parker and
Ralph Waldo Emerson. Douglass well–expressed his support of the cause of abolition. As with other
transcendentalists, he was a prolific intellectual individualist. Like Thoreau, he believed that the
moral individual was accountable to articulate views of truth until it was acknowledged by others.
Frederick Douglass was born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey into slavery in Talbot County,
Maryland, around 1818. Later in life, he chose to celebrate his birth on February 14, due to not
having knowledge of the accurate date. In his Narrative Douglass expresses, "The white children

Compare And Contrast Lincoln And Frederick Douglass
Throughout the course of American history, there had been many brilliant minds and leaders who
re–wrote the history, and during the Civil War era there existed many factions seeking to
dramatically change America. Amazing speakers and thinkers spread their ideas throughout history.
These thinkers had many obstacles that they had to overcome to the point that they changed history.
Fredrick Douglass for an example, An African American, who fought for black civil rights using
speeches like "What to the slave is the Fourth of July", talking about the terror of the slavery, On the
other hand, Abraham Lincoln an optimistic speaker who went through hardship and learning

They both use symbolism, imagery and much more. There are many metaphors all over the two
poems. For example, it was used in Auden's poem when he says the "Irish vessel" which is William
Yeats, and in Whitman's poem, he uses the vessel to present the people of the USA. The "Irish
vessel" which is Williams body lying down on the ground but that body is only carrying nothing but
poetry, while the "vessel" in "O Captain My Captain" is the ship and it is comparing it to the people
of the USA, and how they felt. For example "the vessel grim and daring" this shows that the people
of the USA are celebrating the end of the civil war. Yet the Auden doesn't really talk about the
people, but he does mention Ireland is mad by saying "Mad Ireland hurt you into poetry". Here he is
using personification, and it shows us that the Irish history has influenced Yeats

Theme is the overarching concept that follows a story. The prioress' tale makes good use of theme in
its telling of the story. This tale is often criticized as having an Anti–Semitic tone in the way the
story is told. The prioress' tale also has a very religious theme throughout its tale. Theme defines the
way a story is told and how the audience will respond to its message. The prioress' tale makes it very
obvious that its theme is religious. The story follows a young boy praying to Mary and learning how

not sure what it really means. Every day while walking to school this boy sings the song while

An American Legend Lost
An American Legend Lost From presidency, to a traumatic death, Abraham Lincoln lived a
fascinating life. The sixteenth American president helped in the preservation of American freedoms,
bringing an end to slavery. From The Emancipation Proclamation to the development of the secret
service, Abraham Lincoln set an example for the future leadership of America. As the Civil War
began in April 1861, a detective named Allan Pinkerton gave assistance to Abraham Lincoln. The
president requested his presence immediately to Washington, once arriving Pinkerton suggested the
creation of the secret service department.1 At least half a dozen assassination attempts had been
made on the president, before one became successful.1 Long before these incidents, Pinkerton
exposed an assassination attempt. Pinkerton and associates penetrated the secessionist movement
around Baltimore in February of the year 1861.1 During this intervention a plot to assassinate the
president while changing trains, had been discovered.1 The previous governor of New York,
William H. Seward and the Army general, Winfield Scott revealed rumors of an assassination plot
on the president, as well.1 A petition had been made to the New York City Police Commissioner
John A. Kennedy, to investigate the rumors validity.1 In Maryland the secessionist movement had
been discovered by the New York police detectives.1 This abruptly ended the assassination the
secessionist movement planned for February 23.1 The New York police

Douglass is considered the most influential African–American of the nineteenth century. Douglass
was a fugitive slave born from a black mother and unknown white father in the year 1818. Even
though it was against Maryland law, Douglass learned to read and write from his owner's wife. A
turning point in his life came when his owner sent him to a "slave breaker", to curb his
independence. After numerous beatings, he refused to allow himself to be disciplined again. He
called this, "the turning point in my career as a slave". He then escaped to the north by borrowing

Similarities Between Frederick Douglass And His Mistress
The famous author and abolitionist Frederick Douglass and his mistress have many similarities and
differences between them, when it comes to their positions in society at the time. Frederick
Douglass was an African American abolitionist who taught himself to learn and read English,
worked with Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, helped many Africans escape into the North,
and was even nominated as Vice President of the United States. Frederick Douglass would have
never been the man we now know him as if it was not for his mistress. Before Douglass was a free

One major difference Douglass and his mistress had at the time was their representation. When the
Constitution was formed, Southerners argued and eventually established a compromise with
Northerners which allowed a state to count Africans as ⅗ of a man, in order to determine political
representation. Women, on the other hand, were still considered as a whole human being.
Furthermore, women still had dominance over Africans, at the time. Africans who worked in the
homes of their white owners were normally commanded by white women to do the household
chores and take care of their children. Douglass was fortunate enough to be working in Master
Hugh's home at the time and under his mistress's care, because he would have never been given the
opportunity to learn the alphabet. In conclusion, Frederick Douglass and his mistress have several
similarities and differences, when it comes to their inferior positions in society at the time. They
both were inferior to Master Hugh who basically controlled them as if they were his sheep. Due to
society's way of thinking during those times, women and Africans were inferior to white men, no
matter what actions they took or how privileged they were. Both Douglass and his mistress would
have been happy to now know that society has changed. African Americans and women are treated

Frederick Douglass : A Prominent Human Rights Leader
Frederick Douglass was a prominent human rights leader in the anti–slavery movement, orator,
author, and first African– American to hold a high U.S. government rank. Although he endured such
cruel treatment in early life, he later changed how Americans thought about race and slavery. Since
the early 1800s, Douglass' life has been an inspiration for millions. He also created a challenge to
demand all American citizens to live up to their highest potential and make the United States a land
of liberty and freedom. With such accomplishments, Frederick Douglass was able to help progress
the African American community to freedom from such terror. Born Frederick Augustus Washington
Bailey, February 1818 on a plantation on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Raised by his
grandparents, Douglass only saw his mother a few times before her death. His father is unknown,
but thought to be his slave owner. Sent to Baltimore at the age of eight, Douglass lived with Hugh
and Sophia Auld, relatives of his master. Living with Auld family, Douglass learned the alphabet by
his new mistress until forbidden by Mr. Auld because it was "unlawful to teach a slave". Although
his new mistress stopped teaching him, it did not stop Douglass desire to keep learning. He traded
his food with white children for in return their books and lessons. His determination shows his
hunger to feel humane as Americans. Transferred back to the Eastern Shore at the age of 15,

Sophia and Hugh Auld become crueler toward him, but Douglass still prefers Baltimore and teaches
himself to read with the help of local boys. Douglass becomes more aware of the evils of slavery
and of the existence of the abolitionist, or antislavery, movement and resolves to eventually escape
to the North.
Over the years, Douglass is rented out to other owners, until he eventually returns to Balitimore to
work for Hugh Auld again and learn the skills of ship caulking. Here Douglass experiences strained
race relations and while white workers have been working alongside free black workers, the whites
fear that the increase of free blacks will take their jobs. Douglass is just an apprentice, and still a
slave, but he experiences violent intimidation from his white coworkers and must switch shipyards
where he quickly learns the trade of caulking.
Douglass turns over all his wages to his master, however he eventually receives permission from
Auld to rent out his excess time, and begins to save up for his escape to New York. At the age of 20,
he flees, and changes his name from Bailey to Douglass for fear of recapture. After, he marries Anna
Murray, a free woman he met in Baltimore and they move up to Massachusetts, where Douglass
becomes highly involved with the abolitionist movement, as a writer and orator.

Frederick Douglas a major figure in American Literature and a legendary abolitionist was born into
slavery as Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey in February 1818 at Holme Hill Farm, in Talbot

Additionally, Frederick Douglas had major accomplishments that had a positive impact on how our
country is now. That being said, Douglas was an important leader in the abolitionism movement.
During this time, Douglas regularly attended anti–slavery meetings to abolish slavery, while also
trying to help slaves escape through the Underground Railroad (Schumer, 2012). "The starting point
of all achievements is desire," definitely something Douglas had and was not stopping until his
beliefs were sought out. Frederick also established the North Star being an antislavery newspaper
which focused on the emancipation and the rights of woman (Schumer, 2012). Going along, he also
advocated or was in favor of the woman's suffrage convention where his powerful speeches resulted
in the suffrage resolution to be passed (Schumer, 2012). Last but not least, Frederick Douglas
conjointly played a part in African Americans being granted to vote. As a recruiter for Abe Lincoln,
Douglas felt that any slaves that serve in union forces were equally entitled to vote which eventually
resulted in our 15th amendment: Citizens right to vote based on race and or color (Schumer,

Essay on Political Debate of Slavery
During the Antebellum period, the issue of slavery affected many religious and political debates.
This was seen in the Lincoln Douglass debates, legislation, and the evolution of political parties.
The political debates that fueled the slavery controversy were derived from legislation. The first
legislation passed was the three–fifths compromise. Naturally, southern states wanted slaves to be
counted as a whole person because the slave population in the south was larger. The northern states
opposed this. The three–fifths compromise stated that three out of five slaves would be counted into
population counts to determine the amount of representation in Congress. Other constitutional laws

candidate) lost to President Harrison. Several Democratic presidents followed; such as, President
John Tyler and James K. Polk. The solution to the population problems that the west was finding
was solved by Henry Clay. The Compromise of 1850 admitted California as a free state. New
Mexico and Utah had a doctrine established of popular sovereignty. Popular sovereignty allowed the
states to choose whether or not to accept slaves or not. The boundary was settled in Texas. The slave
trade in Washington D.C. was abolished. A stricter Fugitive Slave Law was placed. President Taylor

Northern Whig, Southern Whig, Northern Democrat, and Southern democratic line would be seen.
Clay died in 1852. This hurt the Whig party in the election of 1852. By this election, the Whig party
had separated into the Cotton Whigs and Conscience Whig. The Cotton Whigs leaned toward
southern opinion and the Conscience Whigs leaned towards abolitionist opinion. Their main
disagreement involved expansion and whether states should be a slave state or not. The Whig's

to obtain equal rights for African American citizens. He made huge advances in civil rights for his
fellow African American brothers and sisters. His contributions have caused a balancing of society

would be. He was born into slavery in Tuckahoe, Maryland where he lived as a slave while being
raised by his grandparents. He was treated horribly by his masters growing up. Around when
Fredrick was eight years old he got transported to Baltimore, Maryland where he worked for Hugh
Auld who was strict as could be. On the contrary his wife was kind and actually got to teach
Fredrick Douglass some reading and writing skills. Hugh Auld did not let it last so he made his wife
stop teaching him. This was not the end of Douglass's education because he pretty much taught
himself how to read and write by looking at other people's handwriting and also by using
newspapers. Soon he was actually able to make out what the newspapers were saying so he could
now know what was going on around the

Biography of Fredrick Douglass
When you think of great Americans in our history there are countless that come to mind. Some
immediately think of the many presidents we have had, others think of inventors, but what about the
people that are in between – the people that fought for equality. Fredrick Douglass arguably had the
greatest impact on American society, especially African American society, in the nineteenth century.
Douglass is credited as being an abolitionist, author, editor, and diplomat. He used literature, books,
newspapers, and even speeches, to leave a long lasting mark on our society. Douglass advised
presidents and lectured to thousands about different causes, including women's rights. A cause he
felt a strong connection with was the abolishing of slavery, being that he was once a slave. Frederick
Augustus Washington Bailey born into slavery in February 1818 in Talbot County, Maryland. The
exact date of his birthday is unknown, although according to his book Narrative of the Life of an
American Slave he chose to take February 14th being his birthday because his mother, whom died
when he was about 10, referred to him as her "little valentine". "I have no accurate knowledge of my
age, never having seen any authentic record containing it." (Douglass) Douglass was the son of a
slave mother and possibly his owner. (Foner pg 390) "The opinion was ... whispered that my master
was my father; but of the correctness of this opinion I know nothing." (Douglass) At a young age he

Frederick was put to work as a field hand and was extremely unhappy. Frederick then organized a
Sunday religious service for the slaves which met near town. As quick as they started they were
stopped, a mob led by Thomas Auld broke up the meetings and would not soon forget about them.
In January 1834, Frederick was sent to work for Edward Covey, a poor farmer who had gained a
reputation around town for being and expert "slave breaker" , Frederick was sent to work with him
for the punishment of setting up the religious meetings. Covey hid in bushes and spied on the slaves
as they worked, if he caught one of them resting he would beat him with thick branches. After being
on the farm for one week, Frederick was beaten for letting an oxen team run wild. The months that
followed weren't much better, he was continually whipped until he began to feel that he was
"broken" . So after working for Covey for a year, Frederick was sent to work for a farmer named
William Freeland, who was a relatively kind master. Frederick did not care about having a kind
master because of the hell he went through and all he wanted was freedom.
Soon Frederick planed an escape but a white man found out and Frederick was in jail for about a
week. By surprise Thomas Auld came and released him. Then Frederick was sent back to Hugh
Auld in Baltimore. Frederick was now 18 years old, 6 feet tall and very strong

Who Is Frederick Douglass An Abolitionist

There were many influential people who fought for the abolition of slavery in the 1800s. Among
these people are Harriet Tubman, William Lloyd Garrison, and our sixteenth president, Abraham
Lincoln. Frederick Douglass is one of these people. As a former slave, Frederick Douglass believed
he could not enjoy his freedom while the rest of his people suffered under the burden of slavery.
Therefore, he spent much of his adult life working to abolish slavery. Frederick Douglass was a
notable figure in the abolitionist movements in the 1800s and is still honored today.

Douglass delivered his first public address in 1841 and was offered the position of a lecturer for the
"Massachusetts Anti–Slavery Society" by William Lloyd Garrison and other abolitionists

When Douglass returned from Britain, he bought his freedom and published the North Star, a
weekly anti–slavery newspaper ("Frederick Douglass"). As Douglass became more famous through
his speeches and newspaper articles, many people began to doubt he was a former slave ("Frederick
Douglass"). As a result, Douglass wrote his first autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick
Douglass, an American Slave, Written by Himself ("Frederick Douglass"). This autobiography was
important because it helped people see what slavery was like in the South. In the 1850s and early
1860s, Douglass continued to work as a journalist, orator, and autobiographer ("Frederick

Love Conquers All In The Canterbury Tales
The Medieval period of The Canterbury Tales is held on April 11, 1387. The writing style of tales

number of the great book of his time, and it is fairly well established that his writings show a steady
increase in his literary skill" (Chaucer xxxvii). Chaucer is a writer of surprise. His stories not only
come from plots of other writers but also from his lifetime. "There is of course no explaining where
or how Chaucer acquired his ability as a great storyteller. However, the fact that he was a man of

The theme for this tale is Love Conquers All (Sparknotes). The Prioress is a Nun who must accept
the 4 vows. But the readers see her as someone who is opposite and does not accept them. Poverty is
a vow in which a Nun must hold no worthy possessions. But the Prioress happens to own a beautiful
brooch in which the readers believe she is not fully dedicated to the church. Another vow that the
Prioress does not exceed in is the faithfulness of chastity. Nuns are servants to the church and they
are suppose to show promiscuity. Since Chaucer does not mention the third vow, obedience, it
shows that the Prioress does not follow this one either since she is not apart of the first two "The

Poetry Compare And Contrast Essay
Have you ever experienced that aching feeling when losing someone valuable or a loved one?
Losing someone powerful, who influenced and affected society can inflect people's emotions. The
two poems, "In memory of W.B Yeats" by Wystan Hugh Auden and Walt Whitman's "O' Captain
!My Captain!", mourn the death of a loved on. "In memory of W.B Yeats" is written about an Irish
poet named William Butler, one who died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones in a hotel room.
"O'Captain! My Captain!" is about Abraham Lincoln, the 16th U.S president, who was assassinated
the morning of 14th April, a Friday in 1865. The poem by Auden was written in 1940, a year after
the unfortunate passing of W.B; Whitman, on the other hand, wrote his poem in 1865, which is the
same year Lincoln was shot. Both Auden's and Whitman's poems share countless similarities with
regards to their theme, use literary devices and literary elements.

is the legacy he is leaving behind. , while the "vessel" in "O Captain My Captain" is the ship and it
presents the people of the USA, for example "the vessel grim and daring" this shows that the people
of the USA are celebrating the end of the civil war. Yet the Auden doesn't really talk about the
people, but he does mention Ireland is mad by saying "Mad Ireland hurt you into poetry". Here he is

The Blood Libel accusation was harmful to the Jews in medieval Europe because it enhanced

Essay On African Americans After The Civil War
After a long journey, Robert Lee surrendered to the Union, and in theory, slaves were given
freedom. While news spread that the Confederacy lost, slaves rejoiced over the news. However,
without the knowledge of their future, slaves would celebrate prematurely, no knowing that the
battle for freedom was not merely over. Freedom was hard and long struggle for freed slaves but a
natural born right for white people. Whites would not cherish the taste of acquiring freedom, unlike
freed slaves, who would die just for a sliver of freedom. Acquiring freedom for freed slaves was
difficult because it was an incorporation of new rights; such as the right to participate in the

Without certain skills, freedmen were not able to have full freedom and instead have "negative

integrated into the society and the economy, this did not assure that people would automatically treat
slaves as humans. Some people would try to limit the rights of freedmen. These people would pass

Frederick Douglass : Better To Die Free Than Live As Slaves
"Better to die free than live as slaves," was a motto that Frederick Douglass tried to instill into all
African Americans in the 1860's. Frederick Douglass was once a slave himself and he knew
personally how it felt to be attacked based on the color of your skin. He wanted to find a way to help
the slaves of this time to become free and have a better life. He then wrote "Men of Color to Arms"
in March of 1863 while in New York to convince the African Americans to join the war. His logic
was that if they win, it would secure the rights of the black man. In turn, it would secure their
freedom.
First off, Frederick Douglass was a Journalist, Civil rights activist, and an author. He was also the
first African American to hold a high US Government rank and be nominated for president in 1888.
For the first 8 years of his life (1818–1826), Douglass lived with his grandmother on a plantation in
Maryland. Then his owner sends him to Baltimore to live with Hugh Auld. Hugh's wife broke the
state law and taught Douglass to read and write when he was 12 years old. He then taught other
slaves to read the bible as well as write. In 1834 his master dies and he is sent back to the plantation
After escaping slavery in Maryland, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement in
Massachusetts and New York. In 1839, Douglass became upset when he attended a church in
Massachusetts that was segregated. He wanted to make a change. It was these aspects of Frederick

  • 1. To What Extent Was Slavery the Cause of the American Civil... In the context of the period 1763–1865, how far was the American Civil War caused by long term divisions over the issue of slavery? In his second inaugural address in March 1865, Abraham Lincoln looked back at the beginning of the Civil War four years earlier "all knew," he said, that slavery "was somehow the cause of the war." This essay will endeavour to discuss the role of long term divisions caused by the slavery debate in the eventual outbreak of the Civil War. In doing so this analysis will encompass the period between the birth of the nation beginning with the start of the American Revolution in 1763 and the conclusion of the Civil War in 1865. This being a period in which the newly independent nation struggled with its state ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are antagonistic principles and cannot exist long together – one or the other must fall." 'Slave power' heightened through media influences such as the non–abolitionist Cincinnati Daily Commercial claiming "There is such a thing as THE SLAVE POWER" encouraged the Northern populace that action needed to be taken against the South in order to preserve the existence of their personal liberty. On the other hand, many Southerners like historian Ulrich Bonner Phillips, viewed slavery as a hierarchic order thus making it wholesome practice. Phillips recalls setting off to school as a young child and burdened by the prospect that his "sable companion" was able to play all day long. According to Hugh Tulloch, the Southerners had evolved a unique form of social relations based on slavery; whereby the master's role was essentially paternal, "without slavery the black would either lapse into African savagery." It is this view and that of Edward Channing's, "the slaves were often happier than their masters" that appears so distorted in comparison to the Northern interpretation on slavery. It was this that became an important factor in consolidating antislavery sentiment in the North, thus widening the sectional rift between the North and South. "If slavery is not wrong, ... Initially, Douglass was given to Lucretia Auld, but then Thomas Auld, her husband, sent him to Baltimore with his brother, Hugh. At Baltimore, Hugh's wife taught Douglass how to read and write. The "Irish vessel" which is Williams body lying down on the ground but that body is only carrying nothing but poetry, while the "vessel" in "O Captain My Captain" is the ship and it is comparing it to the people of the USA, and how they felt. For example "the vessel grim and daring" this shows that the people of the USA are celebrating the end of the civil war. Yet the Auden doesn't really talk about the people, but he does mention Ireland is mad by saying "Mad Ireland hurt you into poetry". The sixteenth American president helped in the preservation of American freedoms, bringing an end to slavery. As the Civil War began in April 1861, a detective named Allan Pinkerton gave assistance to Abraham Lincoln. The president requested his presence immediately to Washington, once arriving Pinkerton suggested the creation of the secret service department.1 At least half a dozen assassination attempts had been made on the president, before one became successful.1 Long before these incidents, Pinkerton exposed an assassination attempt. Pinkerton and associates penetrated the secessionist movement around Baltimore in February of the year 1861.1 During this intervention a plot to assassinate the president while changing trains, had been discovered.1 The previous governor of New York, William H. Similarities Between Frederick Douglass And His Mistress The famous author and abolitionist Frederick Douglass and his mistress have many similarities and differences between them, when it comes to their positions in society at the time. Frederick Douglass was an African American abolitionist who taught himself to learn and read English, worked with Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, helped many Africans escape into the North, and was even nominated as Vice President of the United States. Frederick Douglass would have never been the man we now know him as if it was not for his mistress. Before Douglass was a free man, he was a slave who worked for a man named Master Hugh. Women, on the other hand, were still considered as a whole human being. Furthermore, women still had dominance over Africans, at the time. Africans who worked in the homes of their white owners were normally commanded by white women to do the household chores and take care of their children. Douglass was fortunate enough to be working in Master Hugh's home at the time and under his mistress's care, because he would have never been given the opportunity to learn the alphabet. In conclusion, Frederick Douglass and his mistress have several similarities and differences, when it comes to their inferior positions in society at the time. They both were inferior to Master Hugh who basically controlled them as if they were his sheep. However, without the knowledge of their future, slaves would celebrate prematurely, no knowing that the battle for freedom was not merely over. Freedom was hard and long struggle for freed slaves but a natural born right for white people. Whites would not cherish the taste of acquiring freedom, unlike freed slaves, who would die just for a sliver of freedom. Acquiring freedom for freed slaves was difficult because it was an incorporation of new rights; such as the right to participate in the economy, which was combatted by the lack of knowledge of the economy, and ... Without certain skills, freedmen were not able to have full freedom and instead have "negative freedom" because they were not able to practice certain freedoms. As freedmen were slowly getting integrated into the society and the economy, this did not assure that people would automatically treat slaves as humans. Some people would try to limit the rights of freedmen. These people would pass the black codes. The black codes of Louisiana stated: That no negro or freedman who shall be allowed to come within the limits of the town of Opelousas without special permission from his employer, specify the objection of his visit and the time necessary for the accomplishment of the same (Black Codes, 34) This automatically made the freedmen dependent on their employer. • 62. Frederick Douglass : Better To Die Free Than Live As Slaves "Better to die free than live as slaves," was a motto that Frederick Douglass tried to instill into all African Americans in the 1860's. Frederick Douglass was once a slave himself and he knew personally how it felt to be attacked based on the color of your skin. He wanted to find a way to help the slaves of this time to become free and have a better life. He then wrote "Men of Color to Arms" in March of 1863 while in New York to convince the African Americans to join the war. His logic was that if they win, it would secure the rights of the black man. In turn, it would secure their freedom. First off, Frederick Douglass was a Journalist, Civil rights activist, and an author. He was also the first African American to hold a high US Government rank and be nominated for president in 1888. For the first 8 years of his life (1818–1826), Douglass lived with his grandmother on a plantation in Maryland. Then his owner sends him to Baltimore to live with Hugh Auld. Hugh's wife broke the state law and taught Douglass to read and write when he was 12 years old. He then taught other slaves to read the bible as well as write. In 1834 his master dies and he is sent back to the plantation After escaping slavery in Maryland, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York. In 1839, Douglass became upset when he attended a church in Massachusetts that was segregated. He wanted to make a change. It was these aspects of Frederick Douglass' life that led the ... When the transepts are applied, it is normal to have them placed directly opposite of each other, for example like in Lichfield Cathedral. The Eastern side is where the most value is held in the Cathedral, which is marked by greater diversity in form, richness, and height difference of the ribbed vault. In England, the Eastern section is almost always a square form or similar, and less often an apse, which is a more semi–circular or polygonal in plan. [2] The internal section of cathedrals are made up of a main arcade, which are arches supported by long and thin pillars. [2] Above that is the Triforium, and a Gallery surrounding it and above the aisle. On the highest level is the Clerestory, topped by the ribbed vault and the new roof. The roof is often enriched with tiles or other coverings. Ornaments such as mouldings, carvings and the use of colour have added a point of interest and beauty to the gothic cathedral. The gables, a triangular shaped wall forming the roof, is one of the most distinctive gothic characteristic. It is placed at the end of the nave and transepts. As a widely used rule, gables contain one or more windows.
