Analyze Learners
General Characteristics
This lesson plan is designed for fourth grade students to become familiar with West
Virginia History. The students vary in age from 9 to 10 years. There are 8 girls and
11 boys in the class. 17 of the students are West Virginia natives. There is 1 deaf
student. Almost all of the students are from poor socioeconomic environments.
Specific Entry Competencies
All students are aware of the state they live in and the capitol. None of them know
what county they live in or what a state symbol is. The majority of the students have
no knowledge of West Virginia history at all.
Learning Styles
The students need to constantly be hands on in order to keep their full attention.
There are a few students who are disruptive and have a difficult staying on task
without constant reminder. The students lose interest quickly when reading from
their textbooks. The students should be tested orally because they do not test well
on written assessments.
State Objectives
Learning Outcomes
The main objective for this lesson plan is for all students to become familiar with
West Virginia history. They should be able to explain how West Virginia became a
state, identify the surrounding states, and recognize state symbols. Students should
be able to do this by day 5 with 100% accuracy.
Conditions of Performance
Students will be able to illustrate all the elements on West Virginia’s state flag and
explain what everything symbolizes.
Degree of Acceptable Performance
Students should be able to do this by the end of the day with 100% accuracy.

2. Select Methods, Media, and Materials
Methods
The method chosen for this lesson is whole class instruction.
Media
The media used for this lesson is computers. The programs that will be utilized on
the computer are YouTube, a digital storytelling resource website (such as
http://www.zooburst.com/), and a Web 2.0, www.polleverywhere.com.
Materials
There are no paper or pencil materials needed for this lesson, it will soley be done
by the use of computers.
Utilize Media and Materials
Preview the Materials
Teacher will preview the given websites to make sure they are no technological
difficulties.

3. Prepare the Materials and Environment
The teacher will make sure all computers are turned on and working properly
before the class arrives. The students will be sitting at computers along the wall.
Provide the Learning Experience
Students will be encouraged to add creativity to their videos. The students will be
asked to take responsibility for the information needed to be learned.
Require Learner Participation
Students will share their videos with the class at the end of the day. After each
student has showed their video, peers will be advised to use a Web 2.0. Students
will log on to www.polleverywhere.com and answer the poll the teacher has
created. The poll will ask which video had all elements correct.
Evaluate and Revise
Students will be given an option on how they chose to be assessed. They will be
given two choices. They can either show their knowledge of West Virginia’s state
flag by simply pointing to a flag and describing each element and what it symbolizes
on a YouTube video. Or students could make their own digital story where they can
have more creative freedom. The only thing required is that they correctly identify

4. what each element of the flag symbolizes. The teacher will go over the poll results
and explain why the answers or correct or incorrect.
