General Characteristics
This lesson plan is designed for fourth grade students to become familiar with West
Virginia History. The students vary in age from 9 to 10 years. There are 8 girls and
11 boys in the class. 17 of the students are West Virginia natives. There is 1 deaf
student. Almost all of the students are from poor socioeconomic environments.
Specific Entry Competencies
All students are aware of the state they live in and the capitol. None of them know
what county they live in or what a state symbol is. The majority of the students have
no knowledge of West Virginia history at all.
Learning Styles
The students need to constantly be hands on in order to keep their full attention.
There are a few students who are disruptive and have a difficult staying on task
without constant reminder. The students lose interest quickly when reading from
their textbooks. The students should be tested orally because they do not test well
on written assessments.
State Objectives
Learning Outcomes
The main objective for this lesson plan is for all students to become familiar with
West Virginia history. They should be able to explain how West Virginia became a
state, identify the surrounding states, and recognize state symbols. Students should
be able to do this by day 5 with 100% accuracy.

Students will give a five-minute presentation on an assigned state symbol. They can
chose to present the information any way they chose.
Degree of Acceptable Performance
Students should be able to do this by the end of the day with 100% accuracy.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials
Methods
The method chosen for this lesson is small group instruction. The teacher will assign
each small group a particular state symbol. For example, one group may get black
bears and another might get cardinals.
Media
The media selected for this lesson plan is all available in the classroom. Students
will be completing their assignments on the computers along the wall in the room.
They will be utilizing programs such as Wikispaces and Second Life. If they choose
to use Wikispaces they will be required to have a module for what the state symbol
is and where it is most commonly found. They will also need to include pictures. If
the students choose to use Second Life they are to create an avatar and search until
they find their assigned state symbol. Once they find the state symbol they will be
asked to take a screen shot and write a narrative of where they found it. Then the
students will be required to research and find if that is where you would find it in
West Virginia as well.
Materials
The only materials that will be utilized during this lesson are on the computer.
Utilize Media and Materials
Preview the Materials
The instructor will preview the computers to make sure they are all working
properly.
Prepare the Materials and Environment
The teacher will turn all of the computers on before the students arrive. The
students will be sitting at computers along the wall.
Provide the Learning Experience
The teacher will keep students interested by letting this chose how they want to
learn the required information.
Require Learner Participation
Students will be required to share their presentation with the class at the end of the
day. Since the students will be placed in groups, each member of the group is to
have equal speaking parts. At the end of the presentation, each group is required to
ask one question of the presenting group.
Evaluate and Revise
Groups will be evaluated on individual speaking parts, if they answered the
questions correctly, and if the information is correct on their presentations. The
teacher will correct students who answer a question incorrectly.
