1. Day 1: What Are Genetics?
Analyze Learners
The class will consist of 20, male and female, 7th grade students. They have
various learning styles consisting of visual, kinesthetic, auditory. These
students are ethnically diverse and have little prior knowledge of genetics.
Despite a lack of mastery in the subject, the students do have a general idea
of reproduction and representative diagrams (venn diagrams, charts, ect.).
2. State Objectives
7th grade Students will demonstrate introductory knowledge in the basics of
genetics, including dominance/recessional genes, expression, DNA, RNA, and
mutations through the usage of video, PowerPoint, and a worksheet. By the
end of the day, students will be familiar with basic components of genetics
with 65% accuracy.
3. Select/Utilize Media and Materials
Students will engage in an introductory to genetics video from YouTube that
will give an overview of what the next few days will be covering in order to
give the students general knowledge they will need for follow-up lessons and
activities. They will also view a PowerPoint about dominant and recessive
genes.
4. Require Learner Participation
Students will write their own notes from the YouTube video and PowerPoint
for future reference. Students will participate in a worksheet that has them
compare and contrast dominant and recessive characteristics. Depending on
the student, he or she may compare and contrast between themselves and
their parents or between other organisms. (ex. Pets, other family members)
Follow-up questions are on the worksheet for completion as well.
5. Evaluation
Students will be evaluated based on the quality and content of their
worksheets and their notes from the media provided.
