ISO 17020, entitled "General Criteria for the Operation of Various Types of Bodies Performing Inspection", is an internationally recognized standard for the competence of inspection bodies. ISO 17020 should not be confused with ISO 9001, which is specific to quality management systems. ISO 9001 does not require evaluation of the technical competence of an inspection body and it should not be regarded as an 'acceptable' alternative to ISO 17020.

What Is ISO 9001_ A Guide To Understanding quality management system (QMS)..pdfJagriti Agarwal
ISO 9001 certification can help organizations to meet regulatory requirements related to quality and customer satisfaction, such as those related to product safety, environmental management, and occupational health and safety.
In India, the failure rate for imported products is relatively higher than in other countries, quality control remains a significant challenge for importers and the need for more rigorous quality control processes among many manufacturers. Product inspections are essential quality control measures to ensure that goods meet specified standards and requirements before reaching the hands of consumers. There are various types of product inspections tailored to different stages of production, industry-specific needs, and quality assurance objectives.
These standards are guidelines on how to document the processes in specific industries. The goal is consistency and a set of complete, easy to follow instructions. ISO 9000 is a set of five guideline standards that define the requirements for an effective quality management system.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

1. Third-Party Quality Inspections
Tom Kolden, Manager of Auditing & Inspection Services
Element St. Paul
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
3. Point of this story?
It is frustrating to pay for something that
does not have very good quality. In the
case of the toaster, I merely wasted
money.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
4. WHEN QUALITY IS CRITICAL
For products, materials, or
procedures that are critical
for life safety, however, the
ramifications of poor quality
are much more substantial.
Poor quality could cost lives.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
5. Quality is also important for the purposes of
production efficiency and timely completion
of projects.
Poor quality can delay delivery of products
and projects, and can cost money, time and
reputation—it can cost future sales and
possibly even lead to litigation.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
6. IS ISO 9001 ENOUGH?
Companies that have obtained quality
recognition under ISO 9001, for example,
may require that their suppliers also have
quality management system in place that
help assure material traceability and
product quality.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
7. UILDING CODES & QUALITY
uilding codes require building products to be
dependable for life safety. A manufacturer
seeking to obtain 3rd party qualification of a
product as complying with building code
(from ICC Evaluation Service, for example)
must have a suitable quality management
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
system in place.
8. THE ROLE OF INSPECTION
Claims that a product or service meets
quality requirements are not always enough.
Frequently, companies that purchase
products and materials require their vendors
submit to ongoing inspections of their quality
system by an independent quality agency.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
9. Organizations like ICC
Evaluation Service, which
evaluates building products and
materials, require independent
inspections of a manufacturer on
an annual or quarterly basis as a
condition of the publication of a
product evaluation.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
10. Other regulatory agencies may also require
ongoing independent inspections as well
to provide verification of quality from
companies in the applicable industries.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
11. Manufacturers or potential clients, for
example in the retail industry, may require
their suppliers and vendors to submit to
ongoing independent quality inspections
as a condition of carrying their product.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
12. MORE REASONS FOR INSPECTION
Even absent any outside requirements, a
business may consider independent
quality inspections to assure customers of
their commitment to quality, which may
provide a competitive advantage in their
industry.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
13. So, if a business requires third-party,
independent Quality inspections, what
should they be looking for?
What qualifications are important?
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
14. QUALITIES OF A THIRD-PARTY AGENCY
• Independent inspection expertise
• Expertise relevant to your industry
• Directly involved in testing of the same or
similar types of products or materials
• Experts familiar with industry associations
and standards, who understand your issues
and needs
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
15. Of course, even the independent quality
agency must be accredited in order to
demonstrate that their inspection services
meet an international standard, usually
ISO/IEC 17020, “General criteria for the
operation of various types of bodies
performing inspections.”
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
16. EXPLAINING ISO/IEC 17020
ISO/IEC 17020 provides the
standards for an inspection
agency’s procedures for
conducting business as an
inspector of quality systems.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
17. ISO/IEC 17020 addresses:
• training requirements
• inspection procedures
• inspection safety
• confidentiality
• organization and management
• customer complaints
• and more.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
18. Independent inspection agencies that are
accredited to ISO/IEC 17020 have met
higher standards for the services they
provide and passed rigorous audits by an
accrediting agency, demonstrating both
compliance and competence.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
19. ONGOING PROOF TESTING
• Inspections sometimes requires ongoing
testing.
• It is prudent for an inspection agency to
also offer testing services.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
20. ISO/IEC 17020 and ISO/IEC 17025
Agencies that conduct testing may or may
not be accredited under ISO 17025.
ISO 17025 is similar to 17020, but pertains
to testing services rather than inspection.
Ideally, the laboratory will hold
accreditation to test items identical or
similar to their client’s products.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
21. ACCREDITATION
Many organizations,
including IAS, A2LA, and
others, accredit agencies
to conduct inspection and
testing services to
ISO/IEC 17020 and ISO
17025.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
22. INDEPENDENT IN INDUSTRY
• Quality system governing its practices for
testing and/or inspections
• Proven competence
• Ongoing audits on regular basis
• Impartial and independent
• Strict confidentiality
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
23. CONFIDENTIALITY POLICIES
Inspection Agencies must operate under
stringent confidentiality policies and
guidelines in respect to their clients. All
proprietary information is held in the
strictest confidence.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
24. ACCREDITATION ENSURES
• Qualified inspectors
• Independence from outside influences
• Impartiality in assessing data
• Effective inspection
• Greater credibility
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
25. QUALITY PROCESS DEVELOPMENT
• A manufacturing or service business must
prepare a quality manual and define its
quality procedures as required.
• Also need to train personnel and
document procedures in practice.
• Demonstrate traceability of process and
materials.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
26. PROCEDURE DEVELOPMENT
An inspection agency can support your
quality system by:
• Assisting with the development of quality
system manual and procedures
• Helping with training and procedure
implementation
• Conducting initial, informal inspection
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
27. INITIAL AND ONGOING AUDITS
• Audit procedures and records
• Review past activities
• Spot check records
• Issue non-conformances where necessary
Non-conformances should be viewed as
opportunities for process improvement
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
28. FOR THE LONG TERM
• After several audits, non-conformances
usually become minor or rare.
• Process improvements are likely to
improve client’s bottom line due to
reductions in returns, complaints and
rework.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
29. CONFIRMATION OF YOUR QUALITY
Your inspection agency will communicate to
the agency or business with whom you
are working to validate your ongoing
commitment to quality and assure them of
the ongoing quality improvements of your
process, product or material.
March 15, 2012 Third-Party Quality Inspections
