Format for Thesis
Thesis or dissertation is an important part of academics of M Tech and PhD
research students. Degree is not awarded to any student who has not submitted
a thesis. Students often find it difficult to prepare a thesis. They are confused
about where to start, what topic to choose, how to write, what is format, how to
complete and many more such queries. This increases the chances of rejection
of thesis. Also there should not be any plagiarism also. But among all these
queries the major tension of the students is the format of the thesis – what
should be the font size, line spacing, numbering, margins, tables, figures etc. It
should be noted that a good format creates a long lasting impression.
Following slides shows what all are the elements of a proper format of a thesis.
Title Page
A title page consists of the following elements :
● Title of the topic
● Author Name
● Previous degree
● ‘in partial fulfillment of degree’
● Department
● University
● Date
Certificate
After the title page, the next page is the certificate page. Here is the sample for the certificate page

Student”, has been carried out for the partial fulfillment for the award of the degree of “Name of the Degree” to
the student.

The next section is the declaration made by the scholar about the work he had carried out in the thesis. Check
out the following sample for declaration.
“Declaration
I declare that the work is carried out by the author alone. Whole or any part of the work has not been submitted
before in order to qualify for any other academic degree. The content of the thesis is the result of work which
has been carried out since the date of approval of the research program. All the ethics procedures and
guidelines have been followed properly while preparing thesis.

”
Acknowledgement
Acknowledgement is a statement made by the student stating that what all he has
done is true and should be accepeted.
Following is the sample for acknowledgement:
“I would like to thank my thesis supervisor (Name) of the (Department) at
(University Name). He always helped me whenever I was in need of him in
my research or writing. He guides me in the right direction and also assisted
me at every step. I would also like to convey special thanks to the experts
who were involved in the validation of this research project. Without their
valuable participation and assistance, the validation of the thesis could not
have been successfully conducted.”
Abstract
An acknowledgement is immediately followed by an abstract. An abstract is a short
summary of an article particularly of research, thesis, or any deep analysis of a specific field
and is often used to help the reader quickly to find out the paper's purpose. An abstract is
shown at the beginning of a script.
The abstract is an integral element of your thesis or research paper. It is presented at the
beginning of the thesis and it is the first detailed description of your work read by an external
examiner. It gives the first impression of the content of the thesis. The abstract should be
about 250-350 words and should not contain any table, diagram or figures.
In an abstract, the first paragraph is about the introduction, aims, and objectives.
The second paragraph highlights the outline of the work carried out.
The third paragraph is the concluding one.
