Theory- Meaning
Nathan Mead
Snake
• Denotation
• An animal, typically thought
of as a predator.
• Connotation
• Snakes are commonly
associated with being very
sneaky and ‘slimy’. This is a
common connotation of a
snake in films etc.
Flag
• Denotation
• This is a flag, and flags are a
symbol of something and always
represent something too.
• Connotation
• Flags can be accosted with things
like pride and patriotism. These
two connotations can be linked
with loyalty which the flag may
be a connotation of
Gun
• Denotation
• Guns are things that are used
to kill people, weapons.
• Connotation
• The use of a gun can mean a
lot of things. It could be a
symbolic of the entire plot
showing that its going to be
violent, or that someone is
going to die etc.
-Colour Scheme
The colour scheme is a
subtle but large hint at the
atmosphere of the game. It
suggests that the themes is
going to be quiet and dark
with a bit of grit enhanced
by the heavy greys and dark
khaki greens. This can also
be linked to the military as
they have camos of these
colours which tells us that
the game is going to involve
a lot of combat.
-Props/Character
The first most major theme setters are the weapons seen in
the poster. The character in the poster is wielding two pistols
and has two automatic rifles holstered on his back. This to
any ordinary person is very ‘overkill’ and shows that there
will almost defiantly be combat in this game. The character is
also clearly dressed in what is at least the same style as
military clothing, which links back to the gritty theme of
combat with is insinuated from this poster.
-Colour Scheme
The use of lighter colours such
as blue/orange/pink suggest a
more playful theme to this
game. Also, a lot of businesses
use blue from their interior
design to their presentations
to workers. This could suggest
a communicative element to
the game that is
subconsciously placed into our
mind when we look at the
poster-Characters/props
The first thing we see is that not all of the characters
are human. This is an immediate indicator this game
is a fantasy and that its perhaps has a
friendly/childish theme to it. But then if you look at
the detailed art style it can maybe be thought that
its more of a mature game for people that are 15+ as
there is a giant shotgun, and also the facial
expressions of the characters are also seemingly
angry.
-Colour Scheme
The whole colour pallet is dark. It doesn’t have much variety, either, with only dark blue,
maybe purple and a lot of black. This is an immediate indication that the plot is going to be
dark, potentially even violent.
-Character
There isn’t much going on in this poster, but
the main character has a very scary look to
him. He has rough black skin and what seems
to be no eyes. He also has very sharp teeth
which fill is mouth like nails. Something that is
very subtle that also indicates something is
the way the character is placed on the poster.
He is pictured as coming down from above
which suggests he is going to be a clever and
stealthy within the film.
Soundtrack
• Clip 1
• This music creates more suspense in the scene
e.g. a problem may have arose causing more
tension within the scene. This is because the
music is quiet deep and bellows in your ear, as
tough you are deep underground. This causes
tension within the mind of the viewer and
changes their perception of the scene.
• Clip 2
• In this music clip, the music sounds more
cheerful and somewhat rewarding as though a
task or challenge has been completed. This
creates an atmosphere/environment that
could be seen has quiet jovial and pleasant to
be in altering the views perspective to a
positive one.
Shining
• The editing on the trailer for ‘The Shining’ has
been made to make it seem like a fun family
film. The editor has taken moments from the
film, and has completely switched the context
around by cutting clips in a certain way to
make the film seem happy and friendly. He
has taken scenes where the characters come
across as friendly and put them all together to
trick the viewer
Scary Mary
• The way the editor has cut Mary Poppins has
made it seem like a horror. They have done this
by taking all the dark scenes with low lighting and
maybe a blacker setting, and also the more
bizarre scenes where popping glides across the
floor like a demon. He has then added
suspenseful/spooky music to give off a fearful
vibe. It can also be said that the pacing of the
cuts is quiet fast, always keeping the viewer on
their feet causing any scares to strike even more
fear into the viewer.

Clip Analysis
• The atmosphere for the scene is first set when
we see the room the fight commences in. The
room seems to be a dimply lit room full of
giant metal pillars and a steel floor which in
itself is quiet dark and gritty. The camera
angles are also used very well. The way the
camera/frame is positioned is designed to
make the scene look more suspenseful by
getting close ups of he characters so you can
see their facial expressions.
