Zeroth law of thermodynamics
Two systems that are each in thermal equilibrium
with a third system are in thermal equilibrium with
each other.
Temperature Scales
freezing temperature
of pure water “zero”
boiling temperature
“100”
The Kelvin Scale
Linear Expansion
As the atoms get farther apart, every dimension increases.
When the temperature increases, the average distance
between molecules also increases.
EXAMPLE 1.1 Change in length of a measuring tape
A surveyor uses a steel measuring tape that is exactly
50.000 m long at a temperature of 20°C. What is its
length on a hot summer day when the temperature is
35°C?
Solution
The coefficient of linear expansion for steel is 1.2 x 10-5 K-1
EXAMPLE 1.2 Measuring a true distance
The surveyor in Example 1.1 measures a distance when
the temperature is35°C and obtains the result 35.794 m.
What is the actual distance?
Solution
Volume Expansion
When the temperature of an object changes, V the
change in its volume is proportional to the
temperature change T.
The constant β characterizes the volume expansion
properties of a particular material; it is called the
coefficient of volume expansion.
EXAMPLE 1.3 Expansion of mercury
A glass flask filled with a volume 200 cm3 of is filled
to the brim with mercury at 20C. When the temperature
of the system is raised to 100C, does the mercury
overflow? If so, by how much?
[The coefficient of volume expansion of the glass is
1.2 x 10-5 K-1.]
Solution
Above 4C liquid water expands with
increasing temperature.
However, between 0C (the freezing point)
and 4C, water decreases in volume with
increasing temperature; in this range, its
coefficient of volume expansion is negative.
Thus, water has its greatest density at 4C.
Thermal Stress
EXAMPLE 1.4 Stress on a spacer
An aluminum cylinder 10 cm long, with a cross-sectional area of
20 cm2, is to be used as a spacer between two steel walls. At 17.2C,
it just slips in between the walls. Then it warms to 22.3C. Calculate
the stress in the cylinder and the total force it exerts on each wall,
assuming that the walls are perfectly rigid and a constant distance
apart.
Solution
Specific Heat Capacity
The amount of heat Q needed for a certain temperature
change T is proportional to the temperature change and to
the mass m of substance being heated; that is,
Q = m c T
where c is a quantity, different for different materials, called the
specific heat capacity (or sometimes specific heat) of the
material.
The SI unit of specific heat capacity is the joule per kilogram per
kelvin [J/(kg.K)]. Also, 1K=1C.
Q and T can be either positive or negative.
When they are positive, heat enters the object
and its temperature increases;
when they are negative, heat leaves the
object and its temperature decreases.
Q = m c T
EXAMPLE 1.6 Running a fever
During a bout with the flu, an 80 kg man ran a fever of
2.0C, that is, his body temperature was 39.0C (or 102.2F)
instead of the normal 37.0C (or 98.6F) Assuming that the
human body is mostly water, how much heat was required to
raise his temperature by that amount?
Solution
EXAMPLE 1.7 Circuit meltdown
You are designing an electronic circuit element made of 23 mg
of silicon. The electric current through it adds energy at the rate of
4.7 mW = 7.4 x 10-3J/s. If your design doesn’t allow any heat
transfer out of the element, at what rate does its temperature
increase? The specific heat capacity of silicon is 705 J/ (kg.K).
Solution
Phase Changes
Q = m Lf
EXAMPLE 14.8 Coffee in a metal cup
A Turkish restaurant serves coffee in copper mugs (with the inside tin plated
to avoid copper poisoning). A waiter fills a cup having a mass of 0.100 kg
and initially at 20.0C with 0.300 kg of coffee that is initially at 70.0C.
What is the final temperature after the coffee and the cup attain thermal
equilibrium? (Assume that coffee has the same specific heat capacity as
water and that there is no heat exchange with the surroundings.)
Solution
Calorimetry  Q = 0
EXAMPLE 1.9 Chilling your soda
A physics student wants to cool 0.25 kg of Diet Omni-Cola (mostly
water) initially at 20C by adding ice initially at 20C. How much ice
should she add so that the final temperature will be 0C with all the ice
melted? Assume that the heat capacity of the paper container may be
neglected.
Solution
Heat Transfer
Conduction
The rate of heat flow with time (heat transferred per
unit time) is Q/t. We call this rate the heat current
and denote it by H. That is, H = Q/t.
EXAMPLE 1.10 Conduction through a Styrofoam™ cooler
The Styrofoam™ box is used to keep drinks cold at a picnic. The
total wall area (including the lid) is 0.80 m2, and the wall thickness
is 2.0 cm. The box is filled with ice and cans of Omni-Cola, keeping
the inner surface at 0C. What is the rate of heat flow into the box if
the temperature of the outside surface is 30C. How much ice melts
in one day (24 h)?
Solution
EXAMPLE 1.11 Conduction in two bars in series
A steel bar 10.0 cm long is welded end to end to a copper bar
20.0 cm long. Each bar has a square cross section 2.00 cm on a
side. The free end of the steel bar is in contact with steam at
100C, and the free end of the copper bar is in contact with ice at
0C. Find the temperature at the junction of the two bars and the
total rate of heat flow.
Solution
EXAMPLE 14.12 Conduction in two bars in parallel
Suppose the two bars in Example 1.11 are separated. One end of each
bar is placed in contact with steam at 100C, and the other end of each bar
contacts ice at 0C. What is the total rate of heat flow in the two bars?

Specific Heat Capacity The amount of heat Q needed for a certain temperature change T is proportional to the temperature change and to the mass m of substance being heated; that is, Q = m c T where c is a quantity, different for different materials, called the specific heat capacity (or sometimes specific heat) of the material. The SI unit of specific heat capacity is the joule per kilogram per kelvin [J/(kg.K)]. Also, 1K=1C.
  • 16. Q and T can be either positive or negative. When they are positive, heat enters the object and its temperature increases; when they are negative, heat leaves the object and its temperature decreases. Q = m c T
