This document outlines the 9 steps to using an integrated unit design with a thematic approach: 1) decide on a theme that allows subjects to connect, 2) identify major concepts as a common thread across subjects, and 3) brainstorm generalizations from studying the theme. Then 4) write questions to facilitate understanding generalizations, 5) write objectives for each subject, 6) identify activities to meet objectives, 7) perform the activities, 8) conduct a culminating activity applying learning, and 9) design a rubric to assess the culminating activity.

1. Decide on a unit theme that will
allow all subject areas to join.

as a “common thread” for all subject
areas.

will be derived from the study of the theme.

objectives to be accomplished.
