Tropical rainforests have existed for millions of years and are characterized by high temperatures, rainfall, and humidity. They contain four distinct layers - an emergent layer with the tallest trees, a dense canopy layer that blocks most sunlight, an understory with smaller trees and plants requiring little light, and a dark forest floor with little plant life due to lack of sunlight. Rainforests are home to a wide variety of plant and animal life adapted to these different layers.
