The tiger has a long body with short legs ending in broad paws. Males are generally larger than females. Tigers vary in color from orange-red to yellow with black stripes of different lengths. Originally found across Asia, tigers could adapt to various environments but their habitat has been dramatically reduced. Of the original nine subspecies, three have gone extinct in the last 80 years. Poaching and loss of habitat have reduced wild tigers from over 100,000 to less than 4,000, with the species predicted to become extinct in the wild within a decade if trends continue.
