Robert Hagaman discusses technology in early childhood education and how it can be utilized to assist with development and learning at home and in the classroom.
Studies have shown that, on average, people spend around 10 hours a day connected to some form of technology. Technology these days, for better or for worse, greatly influences and shapes the way we raise our children and greatly affects their growth and development. Our experts weigh in and discuss their views on how technology affects both children and parents alike.

It’s important to come together as parents, teachers and therapists to help society “wake up” and see the devastating effects technology is having not only on our child’s physical, psychological and behavioral health, but also on their ability to learn and sustain personal and family relationships. While technology is a train that will continually move forward, knowledge regarding its detrimental effects, and action taken toward balancing the use of technology with critical factors for development, will work toward sustaining our children. While no one can argue the benefits of advanced technology in today’s world, connection to these devices may have resulted in a disconnection from what society should value most, children.
We need to understand the ways technology is impacting our children, and how to encourage the right use of technology so it can have a positive effect on their behavior and development, as opposed to a negative one

Monitoring Toddlers and Technology
The role of technology is increasing in various spheres of life and children have not been left behind as it plays a critical role in their lives. As globalization takes place, many early childhood education systems are developing a curriculum geared towards imparting tech skills for improved communication using digital devices to enhance their thinking. Besides, it is crucial to explore the relationship between technologies, emotions and resultant behaviors of toddlers since the amount of time they spent online has increased significantly. However, the digital environment exposes the children to vices such as cyberbullying that threatens to ruin the good reputation that the internet is offering to kids. Monitoring toddlers and technology is a significant process because it ensures that children gain new skills, improve their internet cognition, and are protected from cyberbullying.
Accordingly, technology plays a critical role in the development of new skills for children in their early years of development. In the article, “The Right Technology for Kids at Every Age,” Tahnk asserts that each baby development milestone is presently accompanied by technological aspects such as smartphones which helps to recognize the ways in which digital tools can be embedded in the minds of toddlers that helps to form ideas on literacy useful in the later stages of life (1). She declares that “if you a parent, you will be anxious to document a baby’s first steps, smiles, and as the toddlers start or go on with schooling, they already have an extensive understanding of comprehending meaningful interpretations of digital tools” (Tahnk, 1). Equally, Radesky in his article, “Mobile and Interactive Media Use by Young Children: The Good, the Bad, and the Unknown,” reports that most toddlers aged three to five years have access to a technological device in their homes and understand how to access information online (2). He found out that “most of the households that have toddlers have access to tablets which exposes the children to technology allowing them to learn new skills daily” (Radesky, 2). Thus, access to technology is allowing toddlers to learn new skills in a monitored environment in the home and school setting.
Besides, moderated technology access by toddlers allows them to gain enhanced internet cognition. AAP Council on Communications and Media on their article “Media and Young Minds” observe that over the years, the ability of toddlers to access the internet has grown exponentially due to the availability of internet in homes and technological devices that create exciting learning opportunities for children (3). They imply that “it has ended up increasing the digital literacy of most of the toddlers marked by an increase in the use of the internet by kids” (AAP Council on Communications.

Technology in Early Childhood
This is a student sample – no part may be copied or reproduced
Introduction/Policy and Legislation
Is there a place for technology in a
high-quality early learning experience?
Children are growing up in a digital
age that their parents and grandparents
did not have. Young children have a
variety of digital technology at their
fingertips. Computers, smartboards,
tablets, phones, DVD’s electronic toys
and games, e-books and audio
recorders. These devices are children’s
tools of their time and culture. “Early
childhood educators are the linchpins
in whether young children attend
enriched, dynamic environments
outside the home, where they are
exposed to language, conversation, and
activities guided by developmentally
appropriate practice. Teachers are the
ones who make critical decisions about
how children are exposed to and
interact with technology” (Evans,
2014).
Technology can be very useful for
children to learn and develop. They can
look up birds and what they sound like
or skype with children in another
country. Interactive story boards can
help children to construct meaning.
However, if not monitored technology
can be harmful and interfere with
development and learning of our young
children.
NAEYC and the Fred Rogers
Center are concerned about health
issues and obesity because children
spend too many hours in front of
screens and not enough time with gross
motor and play outside. They also
believe that technology and interactive
media can promote effective learning
when used intentionally. The principles
that NAEYC uses to guide adult’s
states, “Technology and media should
never be used in ways that are
emotionally damaging, physically
harmful, disrespectful or dangerous”
(NAEYC, 2012).
Advocacy
As Early Childhood Educators, it
is our duty to advocate for the use of
technology in a quality care environment.
It is imperative that we inform parents
and fellow colleagues on both the
advantages and disadvantages that
technology can have. Advances in
technology and interactive media are
transforming how we communicate, learn,
and educate in the home, office, and early
childhood settings (NAEYC, 2012). We
must also contact our local legislators to
request additional funding for technology.
When making decisions about
technology, program administrators must
be well advised on the ongoing cost of
technology including initial cost, the
ongoing costs of updating and upgrading
hardware and software, and unspecified
costs, such as additional items needed to
use the product (NAEYC, 2012). Attend
political events such as “Child Action
Day” in Harrisburg, PA, to voice the
importance of technology to state
legislators (NAEYC). Petition parents to
write letters to their community
representative.
Holding open houses, back to
school nights, and fun.

Introduction
Modern technology has been playing a significant role in children development. Nowadays technology has improved and is accessible in every home. As a result, it becomes fundamental in children development. Some of the appliances such as TVs, Radio, mobile phones and computers are the main aspects of technology that plays a significant role in children development. Also, the internet is one of the primary technology that has an enormous impact on children life. Many children have opened social network accounts where they correspond with their friends, post their feelings and follow updates. A survey was done in 2013 that involved interview of 1463 parents revealed that most youth uses media devices such as tablets, smartphones and follow TV programs. As a result, this technology has played a significant role in children development. Children have achieved various knowledge from technology and have exposed to the whole world. Nowadays, children have taken advantage of the shift from analogue digital. Most parents and guardians have bought their children mobile, computers, and tablets for gaming, learning and for fun. As the children grow, they keep advancing in technology. Therefore, technology has contributed to children positive development. However, it has adversely contributed to poor children growth and development. Since technology has both positive and adverse impacts children, kids should be restricted from harmful technologies. More so, parents and all players should ensure that children are not exposed to harmful technology that will adversely affect positive growth and development. The education sector has benefited from improved technology. Availability and accessibility of cheap internet technologies have helped children get rid of literacy. In many countries, children are introduced to computers at early ages. In fact at grade one, a child is taught on how to use a computer. However, in the underdeveloped countries, things are opposite. Children grow without the use of computers. Now, how does technology impact on child development as a far as education is concerned? As quoted earlier, the internet is one of the primary technology that affect children habits, growth, and development. Currently, children have benefited from Internet technologies since they can access any information they need. More so, they can research on any assignments assigned by their instructor. Frequent use of internet, therefore, help them to realize what the world needs and as a result they can choose their pas.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The Technology Taboo: How Does Technology Fit into Early Childhood Education?
1. HOW DOES TECHNOLOGY FIT INTO EARLY
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION?
R O B E R T H A G A M A N
THE TECHNOLOGY TABOO:
2. “On a typical day, children ages 3–5 spend an
average of four hours with technology, and
technology use is increasing among children of all
ages.” -Rand.org
Since tech developed rapidly, the jury is still out on
how it will impact future generations, but that hasn’t
stopped technology from encroaching on the lives of
youth at school and in the home.
3. USE TECHNOLOGY IN
MODERATION
With televisions in 98% of homes and 72%
of kids also having access to a computer in
their home, parents inevitably, even if
inadvertently, expose their children to
technology at an early age.
The world is immersed in technology. It
doesn’t make sense to completely relegate
it to the back corner of your child’s life. As
a part of preparedness, some level of
introduction is imperative.
4. Every child’s interaction with an iPad isn’t bad. In fact, “The use of
computers and other digital technologies continues to rise in early childhood
programs, and technology is being used as a tool for improving program
quality in many interesting ways.”
The real trick becomes the balance of interpersonal communication parallel
with digital learning.
5. UTILIZE TECHNOLOGY FOR LEARNING
It is important that children learn how to properly use technology, and what better
way to do it by increasing classroom engagement and interaction?
There are a ton of interactive websites for children, such as Starfall and Seussville
(cleverly named after Dr. Seuss) that not only keep them engaged but also reinforces
academic concepts.
Additionally, there are a variety of enriching apps, education video sites, eBooks,
interactive whiteboards, and more that can be used to assist student learning.
6. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS WHEN IT
COMES TO TECHNOLOGY
A t t h e e n d o f t h e d a y
We must embrace the ever-growing
industry of technology, however, you
know your child and students, and if you
think they’ve had too much screen time,
turn it off. It is up to the adults to
recognize if technology is interfering
with their interaction with other
children.
