5. Technology has a negative effect on Children's writing skills -Children use “Slang” when they are instant messaging each other, e-mailing each other and texting each other. -Children get use to writing in “slang” and use it in their everyday writing and they bring it into their school work -Fact: “50 percent of teens say they sometimes use informal writing styles instead of proper capitalization and punctuation in their school assignments.”
6. Technology has a negative effect on Children's social skills -Children can’t develop the following social skills through technology. The social skills are: greetings, reading social clues, appropriate eye contact and self disclosure. -For example, the skill social clues can be verbal or nonverbal cues. A child would have to talk to someone in person to get this skill because you can’t give non verbal cues over the computer. This is one of the many skills of how a child can’t develop through technology.
7. Technology has a negative effect on Children because it is a distraction to them -Using technology in the classroom has been a issue that teachers have to deal with. Children use technology to un bore them from what is being done in class. They use their cell phone to text one another, surf the internet, check their Facebook or Myspace, etc….. -In a NEA online article a fourth grade teacher in Arizona expressed this, “Believes cell phones should be absolutely banned from school.” She also said, “Cell phones are nothing but a disruption to class instruction.”
8. Counterargument: Children should be able to use the computer because it has a positive effect on their writing skills. Word processors are a great tool for their writing skills because the word processor fixes their errors so they can receive a better grade. Also, they learn how to type and their work is much professional like when it is typed. Refutation: Technology that fixes errors for them is not helpful because they can’t learn from their mistakes. Dr. Elisa Medhus, author of Raising Children Who Think for Themeselves, says, “Failure is integral to success. Without error, most of modern society and almost all contemporary knowledge would not exist.” People learn from their mistakes and if a child spells a word wrong then he or she can learn from the mistake and learn the correct spelling of the word.
