The Carolingian Empire dissolved in the 9th Century, forming three independent regions including the Aragonese counties and Catalan counties. The Kingdom of Navarra was ruled by the Jimena Dynasty in the 10th Century and expanded into La Rioja and Alava under Sancho III the Great until his death broke up the kingdom. The Catalan counties were originally dominated by the Carolingians but united under Wilfredo el Hairy in 874.
