James I of Aragon was born in 1208 in Montpellier, France. He had a difficult childhood and lived with Simon of Montfort until becoming an adult in 1218. He went on to conquer several territories including Valencia, Murcia, Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, expanding the Crown of Aragon. He wrote an autobiography called "Book of Deeds" chronicling his life and conquests. James I played an important role in developing Catalan trade and maritime power and establishing new laws and administration for his expanding kingdom.

Montpellier.

3. He was the Son of Peter II of Aragon and
Maria of Montpellier. He had a difficult
childhood; Peter sleeped with one of her lovers
and Maria had realized that her husband
deceived him. These circumstances caused the
rejection of Pedro II to James, when he had two
years.

4. Then James, lived with Simon of Montfort Lord, to
marry him with his daughter, in the castle of
Carcassonne to 18 years.

5. In 1213, Peter II died in the Albigensian Crusade, at
the battle of Muret.

6. In September of 1218 was declared adult.
In February 1221 he married at the Cathedral of
Tarazona with Eleanor Castile.

7. Annulled his first marriage because they have a
reason of familiar relationship.
The 8 of september, 1235, he married with the
Princess Violante.

8. In Aragón , in 1247 the Fueros of Aragón were created by the bishop of Huesca, Vidal de Canellas, which pick
up a substantial part of the local fueros and a mix of a bigger variety of other ones.

9. In the last years of his life, he promoved two
crusades to Holy Land (1269 & 1274), failing both

Formentera to the high Catalan aristocracy and
he do it effective on 1235.

- Castilla threat Murcia on 1243 so the Murcians revolt against Castilla on 1264. So the queen of Castilla
(Violante), ask for help to his dad (James l of Aragón) and he conquer Murcia

20. He wrote a book called "the book of deeds" and it was the first known auto-biography by a christian king.

As a legislator and organiser. He occupies a high place among the Spanish kings. Governed maritime trade. He
was an important figure in the development of Catalan sponsoring.

The favour James showed his illegitimate offspring led to protest from the nobles, and to conflicts
between his legitimate and illegitimate sons.
