The Reconquista began in the 8th century following the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. Over several centuries, the Christian kingdoms in the north grew stronger and were able to defeat divided Muslim territories, conquering areas from north to south. A major victory for the Christians occurred at the Battle of Navas de Tolosa in 1212. The final stage saw the marriage of Fernando II of Aragon and Isabella II of Castile, who formed a powerful united kingdom. This enabled them to conquer the last remaining Muslim kingdom of Granada in 1492, completing the Reconquista.
