The Hapsburgs ruled Spain in its Golden Age during the 16th-17th centuries, expanding its global empire through conquistadors like Hernan Cortes, who led the conquest of the Aztec Empire in Mexico. However, costly wars bankrupted Spain, leading to its decline as an independent Catalonia, Naples, and Portugal revolted in the 1640s.
