G. Booth and Rex Sinquefield, both graduates of the University of Chicago Graduate

Although Mount Vernon, Ohio is a small city, it contains a very caring and proactive
community of people who want to help those in need. This attribute of the citizens of
Mount Vernon can be clearly seen in the great number of services and shelters
available to people in crisis situations. One of the services offered is the Winter
Sanctuary, an emergency homeless shelterin Mount Vernon that provides the
homeless with a place to stay during the frigid winter months. I spent two hours
visiting this shelter along with one of my classmates, Faith Aleshire. We were able to
speak with three homeless women at the shelter, and we learned a bit about their life

The harsh lifestyle that these women endured could be seen on each of the women
s faces, which looked worn and calloused from the cold. The women were wearing
clothes that were clearly from a second hand store, and they were wearing several

the room. A space heater was located in a corner next to a television set. A

the ladies was working on filling out job applications on a computer provided by
the shelter. They told each other about various job openings that they had come

employment at the new Mount Vernon Grand Hotel. Obtaining a job is the first

agencies. Our analysis revealed that of the eight possible contributing factors, only
three variables (namely, urbanization rate, high school dropout rate, and population
density) affected property crime rates. Our data analysis model accounted for
approximately 66% of the factors contributing to property crimes. The model is
generally considered to be statistically strong, however, if we need to account for the

My first impressions of Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline were positive. As I
do with every book before I read it, I looked up this novel on Goodreads to get a
sense of what I was in for. To my satisfaction the book had many positive reviews
acclaiming it as a gripping novel of historical importance. I found the summary
intriguing. I had never before heard of the orphan trains. It is an event that has slid
mostly unnoticed through time, but it is a part of America s history and deserves to
be known. Just the fact that Orphan Trainwas a historical fiction novel about an
event that I had known nothing about was enough for me to become invested in
the book. Upon reading it, I was not disappointed. The plot was enticing and the
characters were relatable. Though I would have liked to see further character
development of Molly, I liked that we were learning Vivian s story through Molly
s community service hours and portrait project. This allowed us to see how Vivian
s life unfolded beyond the orphan trains and her budding relationship not only with
Molly but also with the daughter she gave up long ago. The lack of attention on
Molly did make it seem like she was a side character to Vivian. That may have been
the author s intent, but it made me care much more for Vivian and her story as
opposed to Molly s story. Vivian s life was such a train wreck it was hard to stop
reading. Literature is often defined as writing that evokes empathy in the reading.
Christina Baker Kline certainly achieved that with her novel. Even the beginning
of the book where Niamh was living as a poor immigrant with an alcoholic father
and a depressed mother made me want to pluck her out of the book and offer her a
nice meal and a warm bath. My favorite part of the story was when she was living
with Miss Larson and Mrs. Murphy. This seemed to be the time when she was the
happiest. Despite Dorothy s happiness, she knew she could not stay. I was glad she
finally found a family to care for her, even if she could not fully love them. Like
many others I was grieved by Dutchy s loss and despondent over Vivian s decision to
give up their child. However, I did understand her decision even if I did not agree

regulations. The California Air Resources Board (ARB) establish engine and vehicle
emission regulations that are often more stringent than the federal rules. Other states

Life of Pi: A Literary Analysis In the novel Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel,
Piscine Molitor Patel is faced with a life changing tragedy. Piscine, who is also
known as Pi, had to survive 227 days on the Pacific Ocean while sharing a lifeboat
with an adult Bengal tiger, when the cargo ship named the Tsimtsum sank with his
family on it. There are two stories explaining what happened while he is on the
lifeboat. The version that Pi narrates first favors the journey with Pi, an orangutan, a
tiger, a zebra, a hyena, and a carnivorous island. The second story is more realistic
and definitely more horrid; this version replaces the beasts with Pi s mother, the cook,
Pi tells the Japanese reporters that he killed the cook the next morning, but Pi is
telling a lie. In the first story Pi comes upon a blind Frenchman who was
supposedly in another lifeboat, at the time, Pi was also blind. The blind
Frenchman tells Pi that he ate a man and a woman, in the second story, the cook
ate the sailor and Pi s mother. After a long conversation, the Frenchman strangles Pi
and Pi says he heard Richard Parker get up and kill the Frenchman. Considering the
second version, the blind Frenchman is the cook and he and Pi were on the lifeboat

35,000 multinational corporations (MNC) worldwide, controlling over 15,000
foreign subsidiaries and accounting approximately one third of the global production.
The developing countries that received the most multinational investment are those
perceived to have the utmost development growth. They are commonly identified as
newly industrialized countries and consist of Asian countries like China, Singapore,
Malaysia, Thailand and Latin American countries like Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.
The ten largest recipient of foreign direct investment receive nearly 95% of the

of nostalgia. Nostalgia means something you long for, I long for a bright future. In

Authors influenced me to wantto become an author myself. After reading a wide
range of books by varying writers like Ned Vizzini, J.D Salinger, Natalie Babbit,
Mitch Albom, and as I said earlier, John Green, I am determined to leave that
evangelical zeal that you get from books, and only books, on my readers the way
many books have done to me before. Establishing goals is crucial to actualizing my
dreams of having a gratifying career as a Young Adult/Teen novelist. Knowledge is a
key aspect when creating the goals that you will pursue because it is extremely
beneficial to know which universities you are bound to attend. For instance, my
university of choice is Columbia Universityof New York. I would like to study at
Columbia University because I am interested in the clubs and activities they have
available there such as The Artist Society Blog, Quiz Bowl, and Feminist Thought.
Furthermore, Columbia University has many classes and courses for writing. Defining
clear goals for myself will motivate me to propel forward with my endeavors. With a

The Struggle For Improving Reproductive Rights
Her Body, Her Rights Throughout American history, women have faced many
challenges to earn equal rights in almost all aspects of life. Although changes have
been made, today there are still battle to be won. One of these issues is the struggle
for improving reproductive rights. Women are often judged for their maternal
decisions, whether that is in choosing surrogacy, abortion, and even those who choose
different forms of contraception. Over the years, Planned Parenthood and other
health services have recieved a negative connotation for what services they provide,
especially on the basis of providing abortion services. With our new president in
office, women are concerned that their reproductive rights, such as the right to have an
This makes for a major divide in what should be done in the case of women having
an abortion. In Paula Abram s The Bad Mother: Stigma, Abortions, and Surrogacy,
she talks about how stigma is placed on both surrogacy and abortion because
conservatives view them both as unnatural ways of maternity. What people on this
side of the argument fail to understand is that women seek a surrogate when they
are physically incapable of carrying a child, but want to start a family. Stigma is
tied heavily into surrogacy, because not only are women seeking this service, but
gay and trans people seek to start families, and use surrogacy to do so. Stigma is also
placed here because others believe that surrogacy disrupts the traditional expectations
regarding pregnancy. But because of recent laws that allowed gay couples the right
to marry, this opened up the opportunity for gay and trans couples to start families.
This is not to say that gay and trans couples weren t already starting families
through surrogacy and adoption, but the right to marry allows them the opportunity
to make for a more traditional process of marriage and family. Surrogacy has
allowed married couples, unmarried couples, and even singles to raise children and
families, which may seem untraditional to some, but a way of life for others. On the
