The Rise of m-Commerce

Mobile Commerce , or m-Commerce, is about the explosion of applications and services that are becoming accessible from Internet-enabled mobile devices. It involves new technologies, services and business models. It is quite different from traditional e-Commerce. What is M-Commerce? "Mobile Commerce is any transaction, involving the transfer of ownership or rights to use goods and services, which is initiated and/or completed by using mobile access to computer-mediated networks with the help of an electronic device."

According to Recent Survey: “ Mobile commerce is gaining momentum as consumers get comfortable with ordering all sorts of products by cell phone and companies such as Papa John's watch sales climb. Much recent m-commerce growth can be traced to eBay and Amazon.com, which last year accounted for about 70% of all mobile sales of physical goods. In September, eBay said its iPhone application alone facilitated $380 million in sales this year.” – Business Week. “ A report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India titled 'Mobile Value-Added Services in India' projects that the mobile VAS sector (of which m-commerce is a part) is expected to grow from Rs 5,780 cr (June 2008) to Rs 16,520 cr in June 2010 as a direct benefit of the growth in mobile telephony.”
Why M-Commerece is getting so much of attention? Consumers are changing their behavior and expectations with regard to shopping and brand loyalty. Businesses are changing the way they do business. Mobile phones are enabling these changes to happen on a global scale.

Mobile Commerce: towards personalization • Permission-based: unlike the interruption model that characterizes television advertising, direct mail and other forms of mass marketing, consumers need to give their permission before being marketed to. • Targeted : by agreeing to share information about themselves and their buying habits, consumers allow businesses to improve the relevancy of the offers they send out. • “ Live”: because of the nature of mobile phones, responses can be processed to give realtime visibility of reaction to specific offers. • Two-way : using mobile devices, consumers can not only respond to offers but also request specific types of information or interest (for example, offers related to a brand or a category) as well as sharing information with their peers.
