The Ancient Mariner assures his guest that he has not returned from the dead, but rather survived alone on his ship after the rest of the crew died. The Mariner reflects on how he was overcome with pride and shot an albatross, which coincided with good fortune for the ship, and how this led to his isolation and suffering as his crew all died. Though he tries to pray, he is unable to due to his dry inner spirit. For seven days and nights he sees the curse of the dead bird around his neck.
