The respiratory system is divided into a conducting portion and respiratory portion. The conducting portion carries air but does not allow for gas exchange, including the nasal cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchi. The respiratory portion, including respiratory bronchioles and alveoli, is where gas exchange occurs between inhaled air and blood. Alveoli are the basic structural and functional units of the lungs that allow for diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide across the blood-air barrier, composed of a thin epithelial layer, basement membrane, and endothelial lining.
