The Panecillo is a historic hill in Quito, Ecuador that represents the country's ancestors and people. Standing at 3,000 meters above sea level, it provides views of the city from the north and south. In 1976, a large aluminum statue of the Virgin Mary was placed at the peak of the hill by Spanish artist Agustín de Herrán Matorras. Composed of 7,000 pieces, it is considered the largest aluminum religious representation in the world and was based on an 18th century sculpture inside the Church of San Francisco. Known popularly as the Virgin of the Panecillo or the Virgin of Quito, the monument has become well known worldwide.
