The New Deal created several arts programs through the Treasury Department and WPA to provide jobs for unemployed artists during the Great Depression, including the Public Works of Art Project, Section on Painting and Sculpture, and Federal Art Project. These programs employed over 10,000 artists who created over 225,000 works of art in various mediums and genres. The art was displayed in government buildings, post offices, and community art centers across the country to uplift the public with new artistic works during difficult economic times.
